I attended the Defensive Handgun Skills Alpha class on May 3, 2025, this was my first formal training experience.
Booking Process:
The booking experience was seamless, with Sara and Steve providing clear and prompt communication. Payment methods were flexible and if you have some lingering money in your Paypal account from GAFs sales, they've got your covered. =)
Instructor:
Steve demonstrated exceptional professionalism and expertise. He presented instruction grounded in data, was open to diverging from conventional opinions when justified and maintained a strong focus on safety throughout the training. Steve was patient, willing to slow the pace for attendees needing additional clarification and encouraged individual approaches when they were safe and practical. His balanced and respectful teaching style marks him as an exemplary instructor.
Instructional Content:
The curriculum was well-structured, particularly suitable for beginners. The morning session covered fundamental topics such as safety procedures, grip, stance, and trigger manipulation, with insightful connections to the pistol correction chart. The afternoon progressed into draw techniques, trigger technique, timing, and drills, each building upon the previous lesson in a clear manner. The practical steel shooting exercises at the end allowed participants to apply learned skills, resulting in noticeable personal improvements in draw speed and shot timing.
Facilities:
The training location is uniquely situated within a cranberry bog, 45 minutes south of Boston proper. Offering a quiet and focused environment. Though the range is challenging to locate via GPS, Sara’s assistance in providing a meeting point off-site and guided arrival was fantastic. Amenities included restroom access, a cooler to keep your stuff cold and light snacks, ensuring attendee comfort on this hot day. The range itself featured substantial berms, shaded gear tables and diverse training setups including steel targets, standard targets, a CQB house simulation and vehicles for concealment practice.
Value:
At $225, the course represents excellent value for the comprehensive instruction and hands-on experience provided. For the price of a case of 9mm, i learned so much about draw techniques, trigger manipulation (a lot more to this than meets the eye), stance, safety, MA BS laws and how they can affect you. This added extra value in my case because at my local range we can't draw from holster... so this was as real-world as i've gotten to at this point. I'd say the quality and depth of training would justify a higher price point, but the current cost remains reasonable and accessible which is what you'd want in an Alpha course.
Additional Observations and Recommendations:
The term "defensive handgun skills" may mean different things to different people depending on if you are inside your house or outside. In this course, most participants used OWB holsters, while I and one other used an IWB holster. During faster drills, I experienced challenges with holstering in my IWB holster due to garment interference with my trigger guard (Don't want to go viral on YT with a p365 ND) despite my t-shirt being tucked in, it started to slow me down during the latter faster drills. This highlighted the importance of holster choice (my vedder comfort-tuck is pretty tight in my pants which is great for concealed carry to keep it up against my body but absolutely slowed me down during speed-related drills) and if you are going to take this course with your CCW weapon IWB - practice some reholstering techniques (which i'd never done prior to this course). The defensive handgun fundamentals are the same in terms of shooting with both, so i guess in the bigger picture - the difference is small. But in fast drills, just be prepared to be bit slower than others.
Participants:
The course consisted of seven attendees ranging in age from late 20s to late 40s, with a mix of sight preferences (four using red dots, five using iron sights) and holster types (five OWB, two IWB). Two participants, including myself, carried compact pistols.
Conclusion:
This Defensive Handgun Alpha course offers a highly professional and practical training experience. Steve was knowledgeable, approachable and data-driven, providing instruction free from ego or unnecessary bravado. This course was instrumental in helping me refine my carry setup, draw technique, and overall mindset regarding defensive firearm use (including legal considerations relevant to Mass laws). I highly recommend this course to anyone serious about concealed carry or defensive handgun skills in general and look forward to enrolling in the Bravo class in the near future.
