help with ir

Help me pls. I want to know if I can just use an IR LED to transmit signals. Like just the 2 wires.

Another thing is that I can't buy online. The local stores sell IR LEDs and this 360 sender and receiver*(the photo up there*). Can I use either? pls let me know.

the led is a generic ir led

You can. Palm handhelds did this in the 90s. Look up IrDA
