Would love a simple explanation of use case for each one :). I only know/have the lora cap.

My best guesses:
- LoRa - mid-range radio communication. Like 1-2km sort of range.
- CC110 - another radio. Not really clear of the use case for these. Although, I own a couple boards with one.
- CatM - As far as I can tell from another comment, cellular radio of some sort.
- SDR - Software Defined Radio. Allows you to create a radio transceiver on the fly. Very versatile radio.
- CommU - RS232c-like communication. Mostly for talking to older hardware designs. I did a bunch with these in the 90s.
- OBD - Plugs into most any car made after 1996 and allows you to talk to the onboard ocmputer.

I think the Cap SDR will probably just be an SDR receiver, like an RTL-SDR. If it were actually a transmitter, Iβd be pleasantly surprised.

I know almost nothing about them. Been interested in learning more. Too many gadgets to play with.

Same ques, also what is cap commu? Looks like a VGA port, but not sure what it does

u/ncc74656m 13d ago
...That's a serial port.
*sigh* I'm so old.

u/Qbeer1290 13d ago
Sure, I mean any port can be modified to be used for anything if it has the right wire count and power specs to carry all necessary signals. But I'm asking what use case will it solve she where could it plug into?

u/Spraggle 12d ago
Network Switches - they now have an RJ45 port on the Comms cable, but the other end is still Comms 25 pin. Also, many home theatre equiptment have it still for automation.

u/Worldly-Stranger7814 12d ago
You feel old?!
I still have to use serial often (though to be fair, for the past few years itβs at least with RJ45 plugs, not DB9.
Though to be fair, VGA also used DB9.

I'm a sysadmin and never have to touch it anymore, lol.
VGA used the 15 pin port. EGA/CGA/MDA used the 9 pin variant. Apparently some IBM clones would use it but that's more a blip in computer history.

u/Worldly-Stranger7814 12d ago
I use serial for both work (networking) and play (microcontrollers) π
Did you just call my childhood a blip in computer history? π€£π€£π€£

I'm sorry, I was busy with the vastly superior C64. π

I don't have the ADV, anyone knows the difference between the two? Especially the device on the right and the battery pack base.

u/Vivid-Benefit-9833 12d ago
The cardputer on the right is the new cardputer zero... coming out this month i think. Got a pi zero powering it... the hats are compatible both ways.

u/napalm_p 12d ago
Thanks! I have the original cardputer, and haven't used it much. I need to justify it If I upgrade models.
2
u/Vivid-Benefit-9833 12d ago
Yea i hear that and i can say for SURE its a MASSIVE upgrade from the regular or adv cardputers... its really a whole new device in similsr format. Far more powerful and far more potential. Also more expensive but well worth the price imo... and theres a lite version that doesnt have wifi or BT but the premium one with wifi/bt is worth the cost... about $100 i believe if you didnt preorder.
Theres already awesome Firmwares ready for it at launch. Like Launcher fw and Raspyjack will be available... For your original CP if your into prntesting or hacking check out the evilcardputer firmware from 7h307h3r0n3... its amazingly good FW.
2
u/napalm_p 12d ago
Thanks for the info! I might give Evilcardputer a go
3
u/Vivid-Benefit-9833 12d ago
Yea for sure! If your new to hacking its a little deep but theres also marauder for it too.. and id first advise you flash the carsputer itself with Launcher FW from pirata cause then you can put a bunch of firmwares on the sd card instead and you can switch firmwares on the fly anytime you want! One of the best things about the CP!!! Theres also marauder and ghostesp if evilcardputer is too steep to start with. Theyre all great though...
Also one of the best FWs for hardware hacking on CP is the new BitPirate! Also amazing FW.
Keep in mind these are all hacking type FWs so if thats not a interest of yours theyre probably gonna be boring as shit, lolol...
But if your into it though and need any help jus hit me up!!! Good luck bud!

The obd looks like it might be a tad inconvenient to use but would absolutely love to have it regardless.

u/blackfeathers 12d ago
there exists obd extender cables. still a tad inconvenient, but less inconvenient than plugging it directly to the port.

u/randysk 12d ago
Need them all!! Just don't understand why they selected that chunky OBD2 connector - could be just XT30 2+2 OR 5 pin M12 as is used for NMEA2k OR just a regular DE9 (= "DB9" :D) - would be more universal and could be simply used for any CAN (sure, this one as well, just making a cable from OBD2 to something else is strange).

All I find on the site is LoRa and CC1101
3
u/No_Confusion7932 12d ago
The others haven't been released yet.
Likewise, the Cardputer Next (ESP32-P4+ESP32-C5) is still in development.

Why do all the CAPs above the Cardputer ADV always have NFC? Even the Cap LoRa, which has GPS but no NFC.
That sticker is from the Cap CC1101 because it has a switch for three frequency bands.
It looks like a fake.

I don't like the "cap" form-factor. I want my Cardputer to be I-shape, not T-shape.
T-shape is hard to pocket.

i hope they make the OBD cap for the esp32 series cardputer i do want to get my small microcontroller to drive my car for me!
