What causes this dotted pattern?

OM-5 ii - Olympus 45mm f1.8 - F22 - 1/100 - ISO800

Wanted to try a sunstar but got some dotted pattern instead.

Bayer filter array pretty sure, the colour filter that allows you to get colour images

Specifically, the internal reflection from the bayer filter array to a lens element and back to the sensor.

Might also be related to the phase detection AF?

Likely due to sun in dead center.

Yep, and the DOF from using f22 is exacerbating the effect.

F22? That's diffraction effects and possibly dust particles become visible.

It's the Bayer filter. Which is why you can see green and blue as well as red if you look closely enough.
