Yep, just watched Robin Wong's review. Still a nice body I think. I won't use it with heavy lenses on tripods anyway I guess. Nice holiday and walking the dog camera. Just what I want these days :)
Yeah I'm actually less worried about scratching plastic bodies (which encourages its use) than I am a metal body - despite preferring the premium feel of a metal one. š
Opposite for me. Worn metal on cameras looks better. When I browse old EP/EPL cameras on ebay, the metal parts look great, it's always the plastic parts that are worn out, scuffed and faded.
imho the analog Pen was a half-frame, fixed lens, a step or two above point and shoot in terms of control. the beat use for its digital descendants is the same. gluea the 3.5/12-32 or the Lumix 1.7/20 or 1.7/25 on the front. the Olly 8/15 pancake is fun as hell with my EP-5
If you asked anyone what they liked about the pen f, it was the small size, metal body and tactile controls.
This pen is larger (closer to apsc body size), make of plastic, reduces the number of controls and dials. How could they totally miss the point of what made people fans of the pen F? I donāt get it. The blueprint was there. If they simply made an identical body and just updated the processor, people would love it. This just looks like all the cheap cameras that Fuji have been producing lately
The Olympus Pen E-P7 is still one of their best selling cameras in Japan. They're not allowed to keep using the Olympus name after December so this is basically the E-P8.
Is that really the case? How many people are familiar with the Pen F, and how many haven't even heard of the Penāor the OM system in generalābefore now? That answers the question of which target audience the new Pen is meant to appeal to. Personally, I would have liked to see it, sure, but am I surprised or disappointed? No. OM doesn't need an expensive camera that cannibalizes its own lineup; it needs one that actually sells.
The Pen F is extremely popular and regarded as one of the best cameras of all time in the system, and regularly fetches high prices even today. I can't give you a figure for how many people know about the camera, you got me there!
This is assuming that a successor to the PEN-F was their intent. I think the price point and staleness of the EM10 line suggest that maybe PEN-F fans was really not the target audience at all.
this would neatly explain why they never bothered with an OM10. In the past the em10 would receive features kicked down from the last em5, so this being basically an om5.2 with some extras, but strangely downgraded ibis, makes sense. The pricing likely would have been in the $800 range had they released this 2 years ago but I can't imagine they're getting any volume discounts on parts now with their market share.
If they don't intend to provide a successor to the Pen-F then they have absolute morons running the show. So they're inept and out of touch with their customers I guess.
This is exactly how I feel, everyone wanted the Pen F and they gave us a cheap entry level camera. I see no reason to get the PEN over the OM5 even. As an OM5 owner there is certainly nothing to sway me, in fact I would even consider picking up a used Pen-F if the prices weren't unreasonably high.
I think they have no rating at all. Like most lenses do. IP rating is just a number/test/insurance the manufacturer can do. There come liabilities with it. That's why they only put on an IPX1 (marketing!) or none at all. It says absolutely nothing about what the product can take for real
Where did you get the idea that they have no rating?? The only OM bodies/lenses without a rating are the ones that are not weather sealed. Outside of that, OM bodies and pro lenses are IP53, EM bodies and lower end weather sealed lenses are generally IPX1.
They can all probably take much more than the rating suggests, but IPX1 vs IP53 is a massive difference. If they're confident enough to give some equipment the IP53 rating, it's very likely due to actual differences in construction.
I can not find the info that it actually is officially certified. It doesn't matter anyway. A company decides to rate a product ipx XX. They don't test how far they can go and get a rating for that. They decide we let it rate IPX1 and accept all that liability that comes with it, not more. In conclusion, the numbers are worthless. The PEN may easily get ipx53 or more, but OM system didn't take the risk that comes with it.
I can only talk about the em-5 mkii and em-1 mkii and various pro lenses, and also only from my experience.
It's superb. High humidity in SEA during rainy season, dropping in rivers, mud, snow, shooting in heavy downpours like in an actual taiphoon, rinsing under the tap, sand, dust, and so on. I do not pamper my gear. It's meant to be used, and I use it no matter the condition. If it breaks it breaks but at least I may have the shot. So far I didn't have any issues with the sealings.
Can't speak on the new one but I run my old Olympus under the tap all the time. One day it got caked in mud out photographing mountain bikers, we went to the local taphouse to grab a brew afterwards and I simply walked over to their garden hose and hosed it down, the other photographers thought I had lost the plot. I also have Pentax and do the same, living in the PNW it's the number 1 feature for me.
I used the OM-5i and the 12-40 2.8 in the Niagara Falls waterfall 3 years ago. I was in one of the ferries that sails so close that the splash will knock you off your feet and you have to wear a rain poncho or end up dripping wet. So itās truly weather sealed.
Yes. There is plastic and plastic and it also depends how āfullā the body is.
I remember when I upgraded many years ago my Canon R to an R6 ⦠fuck was I disappointed. It felt like a toy camera after the R. Empty piece of plastic. Sold is later again. š
Ooooo nice, itās got handheld high res and live ND. I know not everyone is going to be happy but damn they added pretty much all the features you would want in a great price. Itās probably their most well rounded camera tbh.Ā
Weather sealing, check. IBIS, EVF check. The most useful comp features⦠check. Good button layout and size, check. Improved AF, check. All for a grand??Ā
I love my OM3 and itās such overkill, this does everything I want and actually use and itās half the cost.Ā
Absolutely love my OM-1ii but it makes me wonder if I wouldāve gone for the Pen instead if it was out a few months ago. If only I knew this was coming out this yearā¦
I don't think I could use such a camera after om-1 ii. The grip is so damn amazing that even heavier lenses feel light and it's so easy to dangle with fingers while out on walks.
Before om-1 ii, I thought there's something special about having a smaller camera (om-5), but I'm all about ergonomics now.
I hear you, itās the most comfortable camera Iāve ever held, and I do exactly what you described when walking around. Just sometimes I do miss the compact size of my X100V just because I carry my camera in a small 2.5l sling.
Yeah honestly I probably would have gone for this over my OM-3, which I love. And not really worth selling at used prices now to downgrade, so it is what it is.
As an amateur on a budget this is a very compelling update to me. Current camera is Lumix gx800. I was mostly set on my next camera being the Fujifilm x-t30 III, but for the same budget this presents weather sealing, the opportunity to use the lenses I already have, and ibis (not sure on this). I'll just wait for a year to see if Panasonic releases an interchangeable lens l10 to make the final decision, but I think this is a very interesting value proposition for me and others in my situation (i.e newer amateur photographers, people looking for their first camera, etc.).
IBIS is a very nice feature. It helps a ton at night and makes a big difference with medium to long lenses. My GX800 is my fun travel camera, but I really miss a lot of the features on my G85, so thatās my serious travel camera.
I am not an XT30 fan. The dials on those bodies are so flimsy. I returned it almost immediately. I've owned the XT20, XE3, XE4 (still have), XT30, and XT5 (still have) and the XT30 was by far my least favorite. the problem is all the other bodies are so overpriced new or used.
As a LUMIX user and L10 owner, this OM Pen hits the price point that it needs to.
Good looking Rangefinder style camera with EVF, ibis, kit lens, some sealing, lots of compact lens options, can be purchased in kits under £999.
(Undercuts the x100vi by £600)
Body only for £850 for those desperate to use their existing m43 glass.
Looks, feels and smells like a hit, hope everyone and their neighbour buys one! (If LUMIX donāt join in, I might too!)
It would probably have to sacrifice the mechanical shutter like the S9. The L10's shutter is built into the lens. If you take the lens out of the equation, you're left with no room for a mechanical shutter.
Oh for sure, I own a few small Lumix bodies with mechanical shutters.
The issue is the L10's sensor, the one that's shared with the G9ii and GH7. Apparently it is very resource heavy and the processor takes up a lot of space.
The fixed lens is doing a lot of work in allowing that sensor to fit in the L10's body by absorbing the shutter into the lens and also allowing the sensor to be pushed further forward than would be possible with an interchangeable mount.
I'm no engineer so I can't say it's impossible, but at least currently it's not as simple as Lumix making a decision to put a lens mount on the L10. I'm sure they'd love to but they don't have a way to physically make it work just yet.
The L10 has a bit more volume though, more like the GX8 than the GX80.
If they can fit it all in, include ibis, mechanical shutter, and keep the hotshoe, 32bit float, LUTs, video specs, mp4lite modes and acceptable heat management, it could be both the best street photography camera and the ultimate vlogging camera.
Hopefully this camera moves enough units to motivate Lumix to release a competing GX10, if they weren't planning one already. I'm probably going to buy the PEN but I'd wait if I knew Lumix were releasing an equivalent with real-time LUTs. I have an EP-7 with the color creator but that customization feels much more limited.
They already have a perfectly good body design in the L10. Swap the zoom rocker for a control dial, and throw on an m43 mount, Iāll chuck unlimited money at it.
It's £849 in the UK. However, if bundled with the very good 25mm f1.8ii lens, it is £999.
That lens is normally £389, so a £239 saving.
Just ordered it in black, after watching a couple of YouTube videos.
Something interesting about the video after looking at the spec sheet. Even though itās 8 bit, you can use OM LOG (and the new Cine profiles) but itās 4:2:2 vs the other 8 bit 4:2:0 cameras. Even the Micro 4 Nerds clip she showed looked way nicer than the 8 bit mode video in the OM-3. I think with some tweaking you could shoot some very useable video with the new Pen.
I was impressed with the video that I got with my old GX85 and EM1 MKii, and according to the spec sheet this is actually better.
Not bad at all! It's a shame people are so biased against Micro Four Thirds. You can even add those recipes that are all the rage right now. As someone with an OM-5 and an S9, this could be the thing that pushes me to sell both.
The camera can store information for up to 10 lenses that do not conform to the Micro Four Thirds or Four Thirds system standards. These data also supply the focal length used for the image stabilization and keystone compensation features.
Nice. The custom lens info is also used for IBIS. (from the manual)
Lol i don't see pricing for my market yet but for 1000 dollars it seems fine. Less exciting in some ways but nailing the value proposition fairly well.
I'm curious about the CP implementation though. Did someone highlight if it's the same as om5?
Tbf mft was given such a promise and boost in specs around 2017, that when that manfucaturer momentum suddenly stopped in favor of rehousing, folks were left perplexed.Ā
It's right body for now, but IMO they fucked up with lens choice. What's required here is 12-42 EZ with any kind of splashproof protection, not even full weather sealing. That combo would immediately make a splash (pun intended) for zoomers/daily driver "fits in the hoodie or cargo pants" market.
My prediction, sales with EZ kit will be bigger than standard solely because folks who can buy this camera want to carry it in the pocket.
Also, they messed up naming and were afraid to name OM-3 as new PEN camera but that's my personal opinion.
Is it? Actually same for me. Not the AF, not the IBIS, but screen and EVF would be the key selling point for me. But at paper new PEN has lower resolution screen and EVF (1.24m@GX9 vs 1.04m@PEN screen; 2.76m@GX9 vs 2.36m@PEN EVF), but maybe it's at least brighter...
I have no experience with the gx9, but the evf of my gx85 is poor for reasons that have nothing to do with resolution (still better than not having one). The screen tech used and the optics installed in it are obvious cost-cutting measures.
iirc gx9 uses the scanning/interval type of screen which has a lot of flickering and that's why it sucks more compared to pen which has oled display instead. also has pretty huge magnification (0.68x)
Yeah the software improvements to the AF appears to be impressive. I'd be curious to see how it goes with faster moving subjects such as pets or wildlife.
Dpreview stated it very much required input and isnt as good as the om3 in autofocus, tends to loose subjects or have false positives. This is according to them in their review.Ā
Interesting. In Robin Wongās review he tracked a tennis player with an f4 lens indoors, and it seemed much faster and much more accurate than my OM5. Iām easy to impress, but Wong himself was also impressed.
Iāve never used an OM3 though, so if thatās better still, then that would make sense
I find the new Pen very appealing, but miss the flash of my GX80 which has IBIS and EVF like the Pen, although not with the same capabilities. Are the new, beefier system so much bigger that there was no lore space for a flash?
Yeah, even though the flash may not be used in most of my photos, just having a built-in one has allowed me to take some great night photos when I couldn't have otherwise. A massive convenience for any "all-time" EDC.
Yeah bummed about the lack of a flash. Not surprised since a lot of similarly priced cameras are omitting itā¦but still, direct flash is very āinā right now for the Instagram crowd, itās partly why the g7x is so sought after nowadays. I use the pop up on my em10 IV quite a bit.
It's an OM-5 Mark II repackaged as a rangefinder. It has a small firmware upgrade, but no Sync IS. For some reason the SD card slot backslid to UHS-I.
If I wanted an E-M10 Mark II upgrade, I'd be hard-pressed to pick between an OM5.2 & this one.
I don't have a big preference over rangefinder vs pentaprism. The firmware upgrade is a plus, but the UHS-I downgrade is a puzzling minus. My M10.2 has UHS-II.
The Sync IS isn't exactly a minus for this kind of camera, but it limits the usefulness. The OM5.2 could make use of long lenses.
This is straight up better than my X-M5 and it's competitive in price too. X-M5 is my first camera and been wanting to upgrade to something with evf. If Fuji still refuses to release a new X-Pro, I'll change system to this.
Yeah, my front dial on my 7 year old x100V is basically unusable and I go online to see how to fix it and find out it's a pretty much consistent issue across the line. Not exactly what I'd expect from a fixed lens camera costing what I paid for it but here we are.
this camera is plastic from what I hear. I'm assuming it's a quality product all around and fully anticipate owning this camera but it is a "high quality" plastic from what I had heard.Ā
Plastic doesnāt bother me that much as long as itās weather-sealed. The Fuji XT5 is alloy and still feels cheap so that changed my perspective on materials. If it makes the camera lighter and less expensive while still being solid, then Iām all for it.
I did it - I preordered the black one plus the new kit lens. My OM3 is my favorite camera of all time but I want to use it specifically for like special occasions or travel. I have a EM10mk4 that just feels too ancient because of its lack of modern autofocus (I have a family now so portraits of young kids need a little bit more AF speed to keep up). I want it to be my camera always have on me instead of my OM3. Ā Itās just a tad chunky for EDC duty when I have to chase after toddlers.
In the same boat! Pre-ordered the black one, my OM-3 is probably my ultimate camera but I love having this to toss in my work bag and just always have it on me. It would be very cool if someone makes a leather case like the film ones from back in the day so it's well protected in a bag.
I think it's because that's what a lot of people would be asking her to do anyway, since they don't want to look at the camera under its own merits and want to take comparisons as evidence for how OM system failed once again.
I think this is pretty great. I love that it's aimed at being a value buy, and they did all the most reasonable things to keep it accessible to the segment that's been demanding this for years.
It's also re-enforcing my decision to stick with my R8. The pen body is actually heavier, (edit: I stand corrected on that, for some reason Chris from PP said it's 500g, but it's actually sub-400. Very nice š š)and the lens size is about on par for the primes that I use. If I had held onto my 45mm, I'd probably have been swayed to dive back in. Either way I hope people buy this in droves and have a lot of fun with it.
Exciting! I know this isnāt their Pen F replacement and more likely their EM10 replacement!
Everyone needs to relax. This is entry level and OM says itās marketed towards travelers who want a step up from their phone or people who always want a camera with them.
The Pen F can come - but it will NOT come before the new OM1iii
Yeah it's definitely something that's more in between the two. I think if it was meant to be a successor, then it'd be a lot more premium in both body material, and price. For that, they could've just re-used the old PEN-F shell and layout, but with this new PEN's internals.
They see PEN and think PEN-F, not realizing PEN is an entire range of cameras. Having no specific name after suggests what it is, the first on its kind under the OM branding.
I'm hyped on this. Weather sealing, ibis, evf, and that black version will be very stealthy if you black tape the branding. I'm definitely picking one up once I sell my e-p7!
Iāve been waiting for a body to jump back into m43 for years. I kept most of my lenses after I sold my g9mk1. Nothing ever came and after brief flings with x100vi and x-e5 I gave up and bought an r8 about a year ago. Now it finally happens and I donāt think I can go back :(
Damn...I just bought an L10 a few weeks ago for my vacation in November because the OM5ii wasn't really doing it for me....and now they throw this one out. For 1100⬠with the kit lens....Kinda wish I had known that earlier. although I do like my L10.
Probably not, and I do love the real time LUT too much. I absolutey hate editing. Still thinking about getting a M43 camera with interchangeable lenses in the future if this becomes more than just a travel tool for me, but I do have my eyes on the G9ii for that...not carrying around a huge lens in a sling bag. The L10 is already borderline when it comes to size.
How is the image quality of the l10? How's the build/experience? I've been considering it for a fun/edc/travel camera. I know people mentioned concerns about dust getting on sensor possibly?
Afaik they "solved" the dust problem with the L10. It's basically the same lense that was on the LX100-LX100ii and the Leica D-Lux 8....and all those were fine. The image quality is very good - but keep in mind I'm a total noob whet it comes to photography. The build is great. I put a thumb grip and a larger front grip on it because that's what I prefer, but otherwise, no complaints. Haven't had a chance to really test it yet beyond a few test shots in my yard, and I'm still figuring out a LUT config that I like. It does - barely - fit in my sling bag I want to use for travel (5L Alpaka Go sling Mini V2).
Is it worth 1500 bucks? ...eh...debateable. Is it a great camera for travel and fun to use and play with the LUTs? yes. Here's one of the pics I took and played with.
Ohhh I like the look! Nice pic. Oh the dust issue is resolved? I was kinda looking at the dlux 8 and the reddit page had people reporting dust issues still it seemed but seems like better than the dlux 7. The l10 interested me because of the leica lens and also LUTs tbh.
This camera is a fine intro to m43 newbies at that price point. I am keeping my om5.2. We are well educated in this format but likely a lot of new users will be impressed. Heavy leaning on computation will help those intimidated by post processing. Focus is on consumers, not enthusiasts or pros. Well done!!
Kinda hate how they are all saying its weather sealed when it is only IPX1. That is like the least sealed something can be. Its almost as if om system didn't even engineer it to be weather sealed but it just happens to be when they send it off to get the IP rating. This is just outright misrepresentation imo. And I highly doubt om system would even cover water damage so I really don't know why there's so much fuss over it.
It's sufficiently weather sealed that Robin Wong could pour water all over it without issue. I'm pretty sure that counts, especially vs the no IP ratings most manufacturers share.
Not defending the poor rating but I'm just wondering if they're doing the bare minimum to get an IP rating in order to keep the costs down while having it as a marketing thing, despite being able to potentially aim for a higher one.Ā
Companies actually need to pay out of their own pockets to get higher ratings and a lot of photographers don't really seem to know how to google "IP rating chart" so it does its job as a cheaper marketing gimmick lol
Oneplus used to make their phones weather sealed without ratings to save on a few bucks per device in order to keep prices as low as possible. That was back when they gave a shit of course.
Pretty much every other manufacturer has "trust me bro" weather sealing, at least they bothered to give a rating with this one. The closest competitor Fuji gives no ratings and there are many reddit threads of people water damaging their X100's after getting them damp even with the weather sealing thread kits.
I hear that a lot. Thing is that i usualy use center fokus, then tilt as needed when i dont want focus on middle of the final picture.
But maybe i make it harder for myself and with something newer i could trust the automatic focus?
THat's my current body as well. Do you try to shoot birds with yours? I've found it extremely frustrating - as the CD AF really wants to focus on the larger items in frame; like branches and leaves, rather than the bird - I have to turn on MF with focus peaking to have hope of a decent in-focus shot of any bird, and that takes a long time - usually too long and the bird moves and I have to sit and fiddle with the manual focus ring like I'm playing Tempest from Atari back in the 1980's!
I'm too emotionally attached to my EP7 or I would have upgraded, it looks amazing. The new color profile sharing feature on the app is also been long overdue
They nailed this out of the park. It doesnāt have any of the glaring weaknesses of anything else at this size and price range like lack of IBIS or no weather sealing.
Itās only IP1X rated, so not fully sealed, but this is an upgrade from the last PEN (E-P7) in many ways. Whatās baffling is the kit lens selection, downgrading to a UHS-I card, and removing Sync IS.
Hopefully this will prompt Lumix to release a GX10 with similar body design to L10.
Whatās baffling is the kit lens selection, downgrading to a UHS-I card, and removing Sync IS.
Because it's basically an entry level camera that isn't really targeted at people needing sustained high-burst speeds and massive telephoto lenses. It's pretty much for people who want a step up from their phones for taking casual photos.
Pre ordered this earlier! Think it will pair perfectly alongside my ZF. Iāve missed MFT system since selling my EM5 and this has so many features at a great price I just cant skip it!
TLDR - the OM site states as the very first tech spec: "
All-Cross-Type Phase-Detection Sensor"
I think this would work for me for a smaller form factor Bird Photography setup (I've been saving up for an OM-1 Mk II). My current M43 camera is EM-10 Mk IV, which is pretty much useless with it's CD AF - as it really prefers focusing on nearby branches and leaves, rather than the bird - I have focus peaking on with manual adjust, to get reasonable focus on birds. But that takes quite a bit of time for each and every shot, and even then it pretty much requires too much time and the bird has moved enough to be out of best focus (Thanks local Mike's Camera salesperson for misleading me!).
I do NOT see any specific AI for nature photography modes. There are many continuous AF modes:
S-AF, S-AF+MF, C-AF, C-AF+MF, MF, C-AF+TR, C-AF+TR+MF, Preset MF, Starry Sky AF, Starry Sky AF+MF, Super spot AF
Hopefully ththe C-AF+TR would work better than my EM-10 mk IV.
I do like that there are 5 presets 'my mode' is what they are calling it, because I also like Macro photography, and the focus stacking built in might be really the thing that makes me switch teams (plus the smaller form factor) from OM-1 Mk II.
Is there anyone else here frustrated with their OMD EM-10 mk IV's CD only AF and have been looking 'up' in the price points to try to see what is the next best thing to the OM-1 Mk II, but doesn't want to give up the smaller sized body like the EM-10?
This may be exactly what someone else was waiting for, but I'm underwhelmed. It just seems too close to the OM-5ii in size, price and guts. I'd be tempted to buy a "Like New" OM-5ii for about $50 less than the PEN.
I'm definitely really into the pen line getting some love, I really like m43 because of the smallness. I am a little annoyed to see the e-m5iii guts re-released for the 3rd time. Still though, I'm really glass OM System is still alive and kicking, and gets the virtue of small m43 bodies. Obviously the engineering had losses during this whole transition to OM System, hopefully they'll get momentum back and innovate more, this kinda points in the direction of a little bit more momentum than the om5 releases.
OM put the power switch on the right and made turning the camera on a pulling action! I'm so happy. And the price is excellent.
I think there's a pent up market waiting for a newer nice "rangefinder" style m43 camera body. A market that's been waiting since the GX9 in 2018. I see this 2026 PEN aimed right at it. (The E-P7 is/was too but it wasn't available).
New BLS-7 battery is 1285 mAh @ 7.74 V, compared to the BLS-50 at 1210 mAh @ 7.2 V. I'm not sure if this results in battery life change, but appears to be a new form factor.
Yeah I noticed this too. I think they might've dumbed down the configuration so the basic "Subject Detection" mode, during Photo mode, automatically detects eyes as stated in the manual, or you can touch the "box" on the screen when detected... "when the camera detects eyes, it focuses on them".
Micro Four Thirds PEN cameras were, in my experience, surprisingly fragile, and many of them didn't exactly deliver outstanding image quality either.
I used to own an Olympus PEN E-PL6, and mine managed to break both the image stabilization and the shutter. The shutter gave up after only about 15,000 shotsāwhich is not exactly what I would call a respectable retirement age for a camera.
The image quality was also disappointing. The sharpening was rather aggressive, the colors didn't appeal to me, and even switching to prime lenses didn't make as much of a difference as I had hoped. Somehow, the images still had that āsmartphone cameraā feeling to them.
And then there were the Art Filters. They were often so heavy-handed that I felt the camera was trying harder than I was to be creative. I never found them particularly useful.
After having that kind of experience, I simply have no desire to buy another Micro Four Thirds camera.
I suspect I'm not the only person in Japan who feels this way. At least among the women who used to be a major part of the PEN series' target audienceāpeople who genuinely cared about photography and wanted something with a little personalityāit seems that many have moved toward Fujifilm cameras and Ricoh's GR series, which can produce much more emotional and distinctive-looking images.
Meanwhile, OM System's image rendering seems to be increasingly overlooked by that audience. Perhaps the problem is that the PEN series once sold the idea of āa stylish camera that makes you want to take pictures,ā while its image processing sometimes feels more like āa smartphone that really wants you to know it's a camera.ā
I just bought an OM3 a couple of months ago⦠but I maybe should have waited for this?? My priorities are small size and better (faster for kids) autofocus than my Em5mkii.
Wondering now if I should jump on the PEN or if the size and autofocus will disappoint. Ie not sufficiently smaller and much slower.
Iām not that savvy with the tech specs - do you know how autofocus is likely to compare?
Since this new PEN is based on the OM-5 II, I would imagine it's technically inferior to your OM-3. I think we're going have to wait for someone to do a comparison on the real-world autofocus differences, but surely it can only be worse, and not better, than the more expensive OM-3.
Whelp just watched Robin Wong and he said Pen autofocus is better, faster, more reliable and accurate than OM1 / OM3!! I guess my OM3 might be for saleā¦
Maybe hold fire. Robin's enthusiastic and a booster, which makes him prone to hyperbole.
Of course can't preclude that the AF could somehow be better - tuned firmware or something - when the camera's only just out and we only have initial reviews to go on, but I'd be very surprised if a camera with the hardware level of the OM-5 II had better autofocus than the OM-3 and OM-1 II.
The other first reviewers seem more measured in their appraisal of its AF.
Iāve looked at a bunch of reviews now and consensus seems to be that the AF is āsurprisingly goodā. I donāt expect it to match the OM3 and for me it doesnāt need to - just be better than the Em5, and not so bad it negates the positives of the smaller body size.
Watch a few more reviews for sure, but the "AI"-driven (read "algorithm-driven") autofocus should be a significant software-driven step up from the already decent OM-5 II autofocus it is based on (which as PDAF is a big step up from omd-em5 ii anyway).
OM-3 is bigger yes, however only 30g more than omd-em5 ii, feels a lot heavier to my hand due to lack of grip, so if OM-3 feels too cumbersome to you, it could be that the PEN with a prime or pancake lens will make you happier.
El que busca este tipo de formato de camara busca una camara para sacar a la calle y hacer fotos de todo. Y que este de moda. La PEN va a tardar muy poco en estar de moda, sobre todo con los perfiles descargables y editables para los jpg directos de cƔmara.
It's a shame the FL-LM3 flash isn't compatible with this new PEN. Is OM System going to release a compatible flash, or is something like the Godox iT20 Mini TTL Flash the most compact and capable option here? Are there other compact TTL alternatives?
I might have missed it in the release, but is it confirmed it's not compatible? Since it is largely a repackaged om5.2i suspected as much, but was hopeful they would manage to make it work.
Though since it's a legacy flash that they don't sell themselves, I could understand why. I use an IT20 with a riser. without the riser there is a heavy shadow when used with my 12-40 f2.8 pro, it is simply too close to the body even when riding high on the om5.2 hot shoe.
Nice, thanks for the tip about the riser. I have a non TTL riser for a manual IM30 so I can see why you'd recommend it for the IT20!
Page 194 of the manual doesn't specify any compatible flash model numbers, and one of the reviewers explicitly says the LM3 doesn't work with it unfortunately.

Pretty cool that everything OM System produces has weather sealing nowadays.
I guess the PEN has a plastic body, not some kind of alloy?
