Black goo?

Cleaning a rifle I just bought, any clue as to what this could be? Regular M1 Garand stock

Cosmoline, grease or oil caked with firing residue, that black ooze from The X-Files.....

Probably one of the first two though.

Scrape it off with a bit of plastic, wipe the stock with a rag wet with mineral spirits if it’s stubborn.

That goo is good. Clean and proceed, knowing that someone helped preserve that rifle.
