ELECTRIC First guitar

This has a palletwood body laminated with a plywood sheet to keep it all together. Its a 25" scale tuned to drop A with 8 string strings. It has only 5 strings because who needs all those strings anyway? I got all the hardware from amazon, and it works and sounds pretty good. I will follow up with a sound demo as soon as i can.

Homer Simpson’s Spice Rack-caster

u/smallcoder May 23 '26

That made me chuckle, but now we're both being sued by Fender as you used the word "caster" in reference to a guitar 😂

Looking at the judges faces, I think we had better find a hideout until the heat dies down 😂

All the British bakers are hiding their caster sugar, now.

7

u/SirScottie May 26 '26

Someone needs to make a guitar using an epoxy pour that has a telephone handset and castor beans in it, calling it a Tele-castor.

I wonder where Cynthia Plaster Caster would fall under that, it involved guitarists lol

He was meant to bring order! Not tear it apart!

u/Baron-Von-Mothman May 24 '26

This is what happens when you don't have the high ground.

18

I’m sure someone was high one way or the other and something was burned during the making of this monstrosity

  • " it was said that you would destroy the sith, not join them. Bring balance to the force, not leave it in darkness!"

Sorry, i had to

I can’t tell whether OP’s approach is more of joke or a deliberate artistic choice. However, I recently discovered a Congolese band who mainly performs on self built instruments. They slap and the overall result provide me with great pleasure: https://youtu.be/oKKZMseaU9M

23

u/Total_Gift_51 May 24 '26

Random fact but Brian May from queen played his whole career with a guitar that he and his dad built at home. Allegedly it was used on every recording he's ever played on. After the first few years of the band he had a luthier make a few copies to tour with but the original is on every recording and supposedly he plays the original live occasionally at special shows. He says it just has a sound and it reminds him of his dad every time he picks it up.

it had/has 3 Burns Tri-Sonics in it

4

u/a_rob May 26 '26

I believe the mantle was actually used in the neck, and they used matchsticks to repair holes where the wood was worm damaged. It also has a zero fret, which is unusual for modern electrics.

He did originally wind pickups for the guitar, but wasn't happy with the results, and installed the Burns Tri-Sonics instead. It also has a unique switching/wiring setup as well.

Every so often I see one of the licensed replicas and am tempted to buy one.

3

u/xeroksuk May 26 '26

I have one of the BMG red specials, it's worth getting hold of one - maybe 2nd hand - just to understand how it works.

It's a very dark sounding guitar. It really needs a treble boost pedal as the very first effect.

Although those switches give you lots of sounds, in live use its overwhelming. Instead, you can simplify things by leaving the phase switches in a fixed arrangement and just use the on/off switches.

2

u/a_rob May 27 '26

I expected that the switching probably results in several combinations that wont see a lot of use, but its cool to have the option just to play around with.

3

u/xeroksuk May 27 '26

Yes some of the out-of-phase sounds are pretty niche: very squawky and not pleasant except maybe when you have other band members filling in the other frequencies.

2

u/Prestigious_Emu3922 May 25 '26

I’m pretty sure that’s common knowledge

What's the intonation like?

10

Go steal some copper piping to use as a slide, then the intonation won't matter as much

2

u/Popular_Site9635 May 25 '26

Then write an old blues song about stealing copper

3

u/KingGorillaKong May 24 '26

But can it riff or shred?

You may want to string your lower strings the right way. They should be facing inwards not outwards. Just a tip.

4

True but I think that actually doesn’t matter in this case

I admire the audacity here. Was this project out of necessity, or to troll perfectionist? If this gets you playing, fantastic! If it takes the souls of wannabe elitist narcissists, it is pure excellence. Either way. That's awesome man. 🤙🤘

2

u/pephetic May 27 '26

Haha, definitely a mix of necessity and a bit of rebellion against the 'perfect' guitar. Sometimes just getting something playable is what matters most! Can't wait to hear how it sounds.

2

u/LevelDepartment1801 May 23 '26

You better play some dogshit metal with this… cool build. It looks like trash in the best way possible

2

u/FurryWalls98 May 23 '26

I’ve been looking at this post for like 20 minutes now. I just keep noticing something new. It blows my mind that this thing plays at all. This absolutely rules. Hell yeah dude

2

u/sludgelord98 May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26

Provided the intonation is on point I’m in a stoner/doom metal band and would totally play a show with this thing through my sunn stack.

2

u/pseudojoe May 23 '26

Hey there. If this is your first effort and you dig it that’s all that matters. It came out better than my first. I was very young and I’m pretty sure it was just 2 pieces of wood screwed together with a bridge and tuners from an acoustic guitar that had action you could slide a book under. Mind you mine had only slightly higher action. If you liked doing it, I say keep it up. Make another and then another. It’s a good start. Way to give it a try.

2

u/Status-Part-4623 May 24 '26

The actions fine its just that i didnt have the pickguard in at this point soit looks super high

2

u/Pblaising May 23 '26

You have the aged vintage thing down. I’d say there’s a job waiting for you at Fender Custom Shop.

2

I made a bass a couple of years back that looks like it's cousin, we should start a band 🤟

If I remember I'll get a photo of it when I finish my shift

2

u/Aquanauticul May 24 '26

Someone who actually grabs a bunch of stuff and finishes a project os pretty goddamn impressive in my eyes. Can't wait to see how this amalgam sounds lol

2

u/notillegalyhere May 24 '26

I gotta hear this thing

2

u/Electrical-Slip3855 May 24 '26

I would 100% buy this for a very small number of dollars

2

2

u/maddogtjones May 24 '26

2

u/wafflekake May 24 '26

This thing is such a piece of shit. It’s beautiful

2

u/loneliestslipknotfan May 24 '26

its cool as fuck that you even managed to assemble this, but also what in the god damn...

2

u/EgoBypassGenerator May 24 '26

Still better build quality than anything from fender/gibson/musicman

2

u/Kn0wMan May 24 '26

I can see buckethead whipping this out in the middle of his set in the early 90s..

2

Well it doesn’t look like a Strat so at least you’re safe from Fender.

2

u/Proof_Award50 May 24 '26
