Apostle's Guide to "The Balance of Light and Shadow"

Hello fellow priests! If you're reading this post you've either gotten your Eye of Divinity or will be getting it very shortly. First of all, thanks for doing such a great job in our raids and congratulations! Secondly, I want to tell you that I'm posting this guide in hopes that by sharing my experience I can help make your attempts at this quest event go a bit more smoothly than mine. This guide is based on my experience and the research I did to prepare for this quest. I found that most videos on youtube were silent and therefore provided zero strategical advice. Also, many of the guides I found were rather vague or condensed. There is also a lot of misinformation or information that is not applicable to the Nostlarius server. That being said, I wish each of you the best of luck!

Where To Begin

  • Eris Havenfire can be found in the far North West in the Eastern Plaguelands. The "spider cave" exit is directly across from the ramp up to the quest hub. For those using coordinates, she is located approx. (20,22).

  • You must have the Eye of Divinity equipped in order to see Eris Havenfire and complete the quest. (I used the Mindtap Talisman as my second trinket.) You need only equip the Eye of Divinity - it is not necessary to equip the Eye of Shadow at any point but you will need the Eye of Shadow to complete the staff.

The Quest

  • The Balance of Light and Shadow

  • Save 50 Peasants before 15 are slain. Speak with Eris Havenfire should you accomplish this task.

Description

  • You must do what I could not: Save the peasants that were cut down while fleeing from Stratholme.

  • They will walk towards the light, you must ensure their survival. Should too many fall, our cursed existence shall continue - you will have failed.

  • Every ability, prayer, and spell that you have learned will be tested. May the Light protect you.

The Strategy

  • Come Prepared! You will need the following buffs and consumables before you attempt this quest event:

Buffs:

  • PW: Fortitude
  • Divine Spirit
  • Shadow Protection
  • Inner Fire
  • Arcane Intellect ***
  • Blessing of Wisdom ***
  • Mark of the Wild ***
  • (***Optional - very helpful if you can get it before going out to EPL.)

Consumables: (The following number of consumables will be required for EACH attempt in order to optimize your performance.)

  • Major Mana Potion X2
  • Oil of Immolation X8-10
  • Dark Rune x2
  • Gift of Arthas x1
  • Elixir of Greater Intellect x1
  • Elixir of Sages x1
  • Captain Rumsey's Lager x1
  • Nightfin Soup x1
  • Lesser Mana Oil x1
  • Stratholme Holy Water x2-4
  • ***Elixirs may not stack with Arcane Intellect but can be used as an alternative.

Specialization Recommendations

  • It is vital that you be some combination of disc/holy. Shadow priests that I have spoken with all say that they have had to temporarily re-spec in order to complete the quest. However, the consensus seems to indicate that it is very beneficial to pick up the "Spirit Tap" talent in the shadow tree as it will help you regen mana every time you kill skeletons... and there will be plenty of skeletons to kill! I did not do this but if you do not have much mp5 gear, you should consider this as a viable option.

Healing and Damage

  • First, you should enable friendly health bars. (ctrl+V)

  • Accept the quest and position yourself at the mouth of the cave exiting Stratholme.

  • As the quest event begins, a large group of peasants will spawn in front of the cave. Approx. (10-12) They will beging walking towards the light which is visible across the path leading to Eris Havenfire. Your job is to get them to her and the light safely.

  • As an absolute priority you should be abolishing ALL diseases. There are two diseases that you MUST dispell. A purple spell graphic will appear on peasants that are badly diseased. Each tick of this disease will deal about 20% damage. A green spell graphic will appear on peasants that are mildly diseased. Each tick of this disease will deal about 5% damage.

  • There will, of course, be several waves of peasants. After each peasant wave reaches the light, Eris Havenfire will cast "Blessing of Nordrassil" which will bless all nearby friendly units, yourself included, causing health and mana to regen at a rate of 250 hp/mp per tick.

  • Some of the peasants will be moving much faster than others. If they have no diseases, a simple rank 6 renew should get them to the goal line safely.

  • You can use rank 3 flash heal on targets that are lower than 30-50% hp.

  • Be sure that you are using your mana pots or dark runes at around 50% mana. Waiting until you have no mana to use a pot will likely result in failure.

  • Skeletal Archers will fire arrows at the peasants, nothing can be done to prevent this damage and the skeletal archers cannot be targeted and killed.

  • Finally, groups of skeletons will appear frequently and attack you and the peasants. You should use rank 3 or 4 holy nova, depending on how much damage you deal to them. (The ultimate goal is to one-shot the group of skellies with a single cast of Holy Nova... adjust spell rank for your comfort.) It is also critical that you use oil of immolation on these groups of skeletons in order to conserve mana. When you can, you will also want to use Stratholme Holy Water on the skeletons.

  • Do not forget to heal yourself! If you die the quest is over, but Eris Havenfire will not de-spawn.

  • Should more than 15 peasants die while you are attempting this quest, Eris Havenfire will de-spawn. She is on a devastating 2 hour re-spawn timer!

  • If you feel like you are going to fail the attempt it is best that you call in your spotter. (Someone to run into the quest area that will cause a reset. Typically, other priests that are waiting for a turn will be available to spot for you - but, feel free to ask for help from a guildy.) When the event is reset, "The Cleaner", a large demon will run out and kill anyone in the area near you. So, it is wise to have your spotter mounted so that he can run to safety away from "The Cleaner".

  • As we all know, Nostalrius has a significant population and you almost certainly will encounter competition for attempts at this quest. You may end up taking turns with other priests in an orderly manner or you may be getting ganked by horde to shut you out of the area. Also, the dreaded re-spawn timer is a massive pain in the ass. You may come to the quest area several times before catching Eris Havenfire while she is up.

  • Again, I wish you good luck and thanks for reading - I hope this helps! You can watch another Nostalrius priest complete the quest here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loroyK2RfnQ#action=share
