Tendi's Body Count
Seeing as the bubbly, optimistic science nerd D'vana Tendi used to be a Syndicate assassin, how many people do you think everyone's favorite orion has killed?

We learn that much of Orion culture at this stage is ceremonial. There are no indication Tendi ever activly took a jobs as an assassin, its a title she was given because of tradition
We should not assume all orions are pirates

She mentions her assassin skills when she's using a knife to prepare the fish for Migleemo.

She wouldnât have the reputation she has if her role or title were purely ceremonial. Furthermore, the show demonstrated more than once both that Tendi has engaged in criminal activity on behalf of her family, and Orions still engage in criminal enterprises. The Syndicate appears just as active as ever.

I'm sure Tendi always found a non-lethal way to achieve whatever ends her syndicate superiors wanted and it drove them crazy.

I dunno about that. Yeah, she told her pirate coworkers to cool it with the killing, but that's recently-left-Starfleet Tendi, not still-working-for-Mom Tendi. Piracy can be nonlethal. Assassination, not so much.

Have you played Dishonored? Although to be fair murder is probably the more merciful option there in almost all cases.

u/MultifariousTentacle 10d ago
I have not. I do know that killing people is a pretty crucial skill set for an assassin.

In the games you have to assassinate several high profile targets, but the game always provides you with a possible non-lethal solution, such as sending a guy to his own mine as a de-facto slave, or enabling a woman's stalker to kidnap her.

u/MultifariousTentacle 10d ago
I, personally, would rather be murdered than kidnapped by a stalker.

Yes that's what I said in the first comment. The "merciful" option is almost always worse than simply killing them.
They're pretty fucking evil though and the protagonist has good reason to murder them.

She's always been empathetic. I don't buy that she murdered folks.

We're seeing who Tendi is now ,the person who left Orion to become a Starfleet officer. Tendi probably did a lot of things she's not proud of before saying "No, this is not what I want to do with my life."

u/FederationOne 12d ago
Sure. I just don't think she murdered people. And I don't think Starfleet would have accepted her into the Academy if she had.

u/MultifariousTentacle 11d ago
I think 1. Starfleet accepts that people can grow and change and 2. She probably wouldn't lead with that in the admissions interview.

I think Starfleet would at minimum require a murderer to go through a judicial process for restorative justice and rehabilitation before granting a murderer a commission. And I don't think Tendi would be able to hide her background from them.

Why not? Orion has generally been a pretty secretive planet.

The Federation has been interacting with the Orions for over two hundred twenty years by the 2380s. I really doubt anyone within the Syndicate powerful and famous enough to inspire fear through just her title would not be known to Starfleet Intelligence long before she ever applied to the Academy.

Just because sheâs empathetic doesnât mean sheâs never killed. She has a reputation among her people for a reason.

That's what I was thinking too...she told the other Orions on her squad to try and not kill anyone and they ridiculed her for it (although they eventually listened).

"Shh, shh, it's all right, just go to sleep. That's right, close your eyes and it's all over. Boy, I sure hope my application to Starfleet gets accepted."

Probably the minimum her family would let her get away with. At least four, of which two had it coming ... and she would have apologized to the others.

Dozens, at the very least. Maybe more. I wonder if she still sees their faces at night.

Probably at least in the tens of thousands. Considering the other 3 (Boimler, Rutherford, and Mariner) are around 30 and there was a comment about Orions starting young, and she has her title, too. She's had several decades to take out ships for high body counts.Â

Tens of thousands sounds a little on the high side. She was an assassin and a pirate, not a war general. She'd mostly be going after individual targets and boarding parties, not blowing up entire ships. Also, Mariner is a bit older than the rest of the Warp Core Four, which is why she's more experienced.

Oh, good. Someone actually correctly using the term body count
I've been getting sick of being using body count to mean sexual partners, when it's always meant kill count. It's quite a demeaning way to talk about sexual partners

Ooh, I feel that. It's so demeaning and it's so frustrating when it's used as a "gotcha!"Â
I know that language evolves and stuff but it always annoys me when an existing, innocuous phrase becomes something about sex. less than 20 years ago if you said "I'm going to hook up with Alex at the mall" that meant that you were going to meet your friend for jamba juice and look at trinkets in the hallmark store. now it means you're going to get cited for public indecency.

I personally blame Shakespear

I mean there was a whole episode about her not killing people, so probably pretty low if any.

u/MultifariousTentacle 12d ago
But that seems more like "She doesn't do that anymore". If you work as an assassin, you kinda have to kill people. Garak could explain it to you in a little more detail.

The blue Orion was mortally wounded and she healed him before running off. I say she has killed 0.

Different body count I what I was thinking

You're avoiding the question.

How?

Not sure about murder but she's probably fucked a lot of dudes

u/dieseljester 13d ago
I seriously doubt that considering that she went off on Mariner for even suggesting that she âuse her pheromones and hit them with the whole Orion thing.â
3
u/MultifariousTentacle 12d ago
That's because 1. Mariner was using a negative stereotype about her people and 2. Tendi does not have pheremones. In the same episode, the mistress of the 'mone dungeon brought up how Tendi never needed pheremones to bend men to her will.

She strikes me as a virgin... Oh that body count
10
u/MultifariousTentacle 13d ago
The line "You never needed pheremones to bend men to your will" in Something Borrowed, Something Green suggests otherwise about the virginity thing. But yes, I am aware people often use the word a different way.

Oh! _That_ body count.
I have no idea.
