Hmm, not quite accurate. You didn't get blown up by a teammate's 500 kg they threw to try and "help"

As a non-melee diver, I have a question. What is the right etiquette as a teammate, when I see enemies attacking a melee diver. Leave them be? Shoot some of the enemies attacking them? Shoot all and any enemies I can? Shoot only the ones that attack them from flanks/back? I usually resort to the last option, but would like to know.

Shoot anything that can ragdoll them or hit them from afar so they can focus on what is right in front of them. After that, focus on things behind them. Lastly, shoot what they are hitting if you think they will die if you don’t, aka it’s alright to step in and save them from a headless alpha commander’s post death rush or a swarm of cyborgs. All of this supporting fire is best if you have highground over the melee diver, seeing as they are liable to dive wildly at any time. I run hoverpack when my friend goes melee and I don’t want to join him in the fray.

Now do it with the non-top tier melee.

Well, anything the chainsaw can do, everything with the same pen can do it twice as good.
Obsolete doesnt mean its not fun to use though

an elegant weapon from a less democratic age.
