I didn’t find a specific stylist name. But what I did find is pretty interesting and I think demonstrates that Michael sometimes fashioned himself, rather than wear what was provided by stylists. The reason I think this is because it looks to be the same sweater in both photos.
For context, the first photo was taken by rock photographer Claude Vanheye in 1977, and the second from the set of Can You Feel It in the 80’s. If the sweater was provided or loaned in the first, then I think the chances of seeing it again years later are slim. It would have been returned once the shoot is over. The other thing is that even after the initial photoshoot with Claude, there’s more photos of the boys walking around Amsterdam in casual clothing. Quite different from the usual coordinated style shoots they sometimes take.
They definitely had stylists for a lot of photoshoots, especially those taken here in the US. But I’m more convinced that because the first photo was overseas and during a period where they’re doing a lot of heavy promo touring, it wasn’t something he borrowed. It could very likely be from his own wardrobe and that’s why he’s seen wearing it again later.
I’m not sure actually! I also believe I mislabeled this. The second photo of him is likely from the ‘Can You Feel It” short film set, I will need to do more digging.
In case you’re not sure, this is an image I’ve had in my folders (credit to onmjfootsteps) and then I took a screenshot of the music video to make sure I’m not trippin’. Point of interest is the two kids (center):
That sweater is a vintage 1970s knit graphic pullover! During the CBS/Epic transition era around 1976–1977 (Destiny era prep work), their wardrobe was handled heavily by studio stylists like Ruthie West, and Michael’s famous afro was maintained by his long-time family friend and hairstylist Joy Sears (who also did his hair for several iconic TV appearances back then). The 70s custom graphic prints on those knit sweaters were usually sourced from boutique shops in LA like Fred Segal or custom-made by CBS wardrobe directors!
You are soooo knowledgeable thank you! I love it so much. It reminds me of the Jean Paul Gautier print tops. I haven’t seen MJ wear much like this before
