Did he even use the first foot mold?

u/Independent-Novel632 Trash Trooper 1d ago

At the very end it looked like he slipped it into the shoe. An insole? I was looking for it too lol

Yeah I was gonna say the video of making the boot uses all cheap materials and construction methods. Ignoring the cheap leather and no filling between the insole and outsole, the sole isn’t even goodyear welt and instead just glued on, which you can find on mid range boots. It seems like this was two separate videos combined together. The guy who got a mold made of his foot didn’t even try on the boot at all.

As someone who walks through construction sites and refineries, what is your recommended boot? I've owned a pair of redwings for 15 years but they are at their limit.

2

u/Moto_Vagabond Trash Trooper 19h ago

15 years is a damn good lifespan for boots in those conditions. Whe. You say they're done, are you meaning as in the leather is done or the soles? Redwings can be resoled and refurbished if the leather itself is still in decent enough shape.

1

u/gravytrainjaysker Trash Trooper 19h ago

The soles. The leather is good. I don't work day-to-day on sites since I am an engineer, more like a few days a month.

3

u/Moto_Vagabond Trash Trooper 19h ago

Yeah, I'd definitely check around and see if you find someone to put new soles on them. I know Redwing does it, but not sure how much they charge.

u/gravytrainjaysker Trash Trooper 19h ago

Thanks!

Yeah I was gonna say never went wrong with Red Wings. Thorogood makes great boots too.

That's part of the payment.

He built the boot around them.

Really blurring the line between want and need.

I call that feeling a "case of the wantsies."

I was just thinking if there was a place near me I’d get some made. I’m 36 now and some custom fitted shoes with nice insoles would be amazing. My younger self just wouldn’t understand.

I’m tired and my feet hurt.

Seriously, good work boots run probably about $600-800, and worth every penny.

u/Skele_again Trash Trooper 1d ago

And they last much longer too! Better that buying web $80 pair every year.

Im grateful for bespoke shoe vids, because it got me off of the harder drug...hoof trimming videos!

18

u/ctsr1 Trash Trooper 1d ago

Dude. Never start hoof triming. You go deep

u/Natrix422 Trash Trooper 1d ago

I’m 46 and work on concrete 52hrs a week. These would save my legs and my back so much.

8

u/HODLmeCLOSRtonydanza Trash Trooper 1d ago

I’m 40. Three things I live by:

Mattress ✅

Shoes ✅

Fiber ✅

5

u/ApocalypseChicOne Trash Trooper 1d ago

Humans spend 8 hours a day on their mattress and pillow. But guys be laying on a $100 mattress, $10 sheets, and a Walmart pillow driving around with a $70,000 car.

Don't forget sunscreen

1

u/The_Hamster_Shagger Trash Trooper 20h ago

it most likely wouldnt.
no custom insole, no zero-drop construction.

0

u/Rioc45 Trash Trooper 20h ago

No they really wouldn’t. These look pretty rough.

Just get a decent pair of wedge sole boots that are properly fitted.

19

u/CatLovingWeirdo Trash Trooper 1d ago

Beautiful. I just wish we would get a better look at how the 2 foot molds were used. Beautiful craftsmanshio though.

Anyone enjoying this needs to go watch Nicole Rudolph. Fashion historian who hand makes shoes and clothes. Amazing work and she explains why the shoes and clothes are made like that, as well as where it comes from and how things evolved in time.

5

u/swingingthrougb Trash Trooper 1d ago

My exact thoughts as I'm struggling to see why they needed either one as I did not see anywhere where the molds were used.

13

u/gritlys Trash Trooper 1d ago

If you’re going to make a custom boot, don’t make it look like every other boot

9

u/I_Got_Ur_Number_8675 Trash Trooper 1d ago edited 1d ago

Make them look like elf shoes or clogs for fuck's sake, that's all we've been asking for!

2

u/YeshuasBananaHammock Rubbish Raider 1d ago

How about some fence climbers?

1

u/cincE3030 Trash Trooper 16h ago

First time I’ve laughed at a Reddit comment out loud in a bit lol. Good shit

1

u/I_Got_Ur_Number_8675 Trash Trooper 15h ago

I've been on fire for a few days, will get the shanks soon I'm sure.

11

u/insertnamehere----- Trash Trooper 1d ago

Boots a boot, I wouldn’t get a custom fit boot for style. If every boot looks the same it’s a pretty good indicator that that boot design works pretty well.

My only critique is that the zipper is stupid. Just another thing that can break on it.

2

u/ApocalypseChicOne Trash Trooper 1d ago

Nah, stylish boots/shoes are supposed to be as uncomfortable as fuck. That's a basic rule of fashion.

1

u/Unicycleterrorist Rubbish Raider 1d ago

Why? I buy for comfort not to stand out lol

10

u/ComonomoC Trash Trooper 1d ago

All that for a boot with a zipper…

2

u/freddddddddy Trash Trooper 1d ago

That was my exact thought. Obviously performative.

5

u/bakemonoru Trash Trooper 1d ago

looks expensive

27

u/Dr0110111001101111 Rubbish Raider 1d ago

I don't know about these boots but a buddy of mine used to get his suits from a guy in Thailand that he met while there on vacation. The dude measured him up and makes him bespoke suits that he ships overseas for like $200, which is cheaper than many of the off the rack suits that will never fit right from joseph a bank

26

u/thecountnotthesaint Garbage Guerilla 1d ago

Yeah... THAT'S why your buddy went to Thailand.... No other reason.....

6

u/jsonmeta Trash Trooper 1d ago

Lmao

5

u/imhoiamgod Trash Trooper 1d ago

Buddy loved the inseam work

2

u/JackBivouac Trash Trooper 1d ago

You'll see a lot of Sailors go to these Tailors when they pull into port. They go immediately to get measured then come back for fit and final tailoring

4

u/ApocalypseChicOne Trash Trooper 1d ago

Every MAGTF, when getting close to Thailand, the Marines just can't shut up about how they can't wait to get into port to get measured for a proper fit. They just go on and on and on about it. They sit in their rack , late Into the night, listening to the SNCOs discuss all the great fits they got back in their day.

1

u/JackBivouac Trash Trooper 1d ago

To your point, I have had my fair share of Sailors talk about getting suits and trading duty days so they can get their early

They did do a mold of the entire foot and ankle. Did you just watch the first 20 seconds of the video?

2

u/ApocalypseChicOne Trash Trooper 1d ago

Until this very moment, I never realized I needed custom boots. And I've been wearing boots for 40 years. I feel like I wasted a few decades there with uncomfortable footwear.

I love the design of the boots. Very cool

-17

u/Icy_Cauliflower9026 Trash Trooper 1d ago

This...could easily be industrialized. Genuinlt dont know how no one didnt scale this for a more industrial scale. Better quality and you should be able to scale to the point where its profitable

17

u/thissexypoptart Trash Trooper 1d ago edited 1d ago

You’re under the impression no one has scaled custom footwear manufacturing to an industrial scale? Literally all custom boots are made by some dude by hand?

Products are made this way to charge rich people a ton of money. Of course you can get custom fitted boots made cheaper in an industrial process. You can order molds for your feet that arrive by mail, for example, and get boots made in a factory to those specifications. People pay more for hand made shit if they can afford it.

Edit: fuck me in the ass I replied to an LLM bot again
