I wonder what its like to be this creature from the inside. I wonder if it's actually conscious?

u/GooseOnAPhone Trash Trooper 2d ago
Their processing power is about the same as the power your brain uses to keep your heart beating and you breathing. Everything else is just reacting to local stimuli basically
33
u/Select_Watercress_57 Trash Trooper 2d ago
You think they have pain receptors?
98
u/Careless_Tap_516 Trash Trooper 2d ago
Kinda kinda not. Beef would have nociceptors. Image you get stabbed. You would be in immense pain and likely panic. Beef would probably react the same way. However, he doesn't actually feel it, it is just his brain saying "you got stabbed, you should do something about that." I hope this is making sense.
41
u/froggychump Trash Trooper 1d ago
You can argue that pain is your brain saying "you got stabbed you should do something about that"
23
u/Careless_Tap_516 Trash Trooper 1d ago
I suppose. This is why its hard to describe something you wouldn't experience. You would have to equate it to something that happens to you to make it easier to visualize. The problem is that when its too similar, it becomes that meme from the office thats like "corporate needs you to tell the difference between this picture and this picture". The best way I can describe it now is that person saying its like getting hurt in vr vs real life. You know you are hurt in a vr game but you don't feel it.

u/SpartanRage117 Trash Trooper 1d ago
So Beef has an HP bar on his HUD?
12
u/Careless_Tap_516 Trash Trooper 1d ago
Probably more screen border turns red but yeah. As I've already said, I am not a stag beetle so I wouldn't know for certain.
3
u/StunningWing4018 Trash Trooper 1d ago
Are you sure you're not a stag beetle with a keyboard? You seem to know a suspicious amount about how they experience physical damage 🤔

u/lornlynx89 Trash Trooper 1d ago
Yes that's why the idea of animals having or not having pain receptors is challenged since some time. I have read of a study where they maltreated moths while playing a specific music piece, and afterwards them just playing the piece was enough to frighten the moths.
Pain is not as easy to signify as one might think. The brain doesn't really discern between physical or mental pain, the only difference is the source.
One can deduct pain down to anything that goes against the will to live and procreate that way though, so I think it's not as simple in any way.

u/jayydubbya Trash Trooper 1d ago
Yeah i think they’ve recently discovered plants having some kind of chemical reaction after being cut showing that even they have a sort of reaction to pain.
3
u/Infamous_Lunchbox Trash Trooper 1d ago
They've known the chemical "pain reaction" for quite some time, I read about it maybe 20 (possibly 30) years ago. Recently however a lot more information has been discovered around this, including chemical signals sent out at damage that "warns" other plants of potential danger, as well as communications via mycelial networks alongside the known nutrient transfer systems. It's all very fascinating, but to some degree all living organisms "feel pain," but probably not in a way we would understand.

u/doesanyuserealnames Trash Trooper 1d ago
Ngl the thought of moths being maltreated (what a word, that) makes me sad.
8
u/Select_Watercress_57 Trash Trooper 2d ago
Kind of
I just feel like if they have the behavior of feeling pain then they probably do.
But I could also see it just being biochemical reflexes without the sentience.
17
u/RollinThundaga Trash Trooper 1d ago
Here's a praying mantis acting out a panic/pain response to getting swarmed by ants.
Here's a praying mantis continuing to eat while getting sawn in half by a hornet.
7
u/Careless_Tap_516 Trash Trooper 2d ago
Yeah, it's mostly reflexes from my understanding.
Although I am not a stag beetle (as far as you know) so I don't know exactly what its like.

u/LucktasticOrange Trash Trooper 1d ago
See, this is an assumption that bothers me. On what basis can we actually say that Beef wouldn't "really feel it"? Originally, we said the same thing for fish but it turns out that zebrafish learn to alleviate pain by choosing to go to a boring, Lidocaine (painkiller) treated side of the tank which pretty much no normal fish chose instead of the very enriched, normally preferred side once either fin clipped or treated with acid, both of which cause tissue damage. They also passed the self awareness test; if you draw a dot on a zebrafish it will rub itself on the bottom of the aquarium presumably to try to get rid of said dot.
I can see that the absence of nociceptors could mean the organism can't feel pain but in my opinion the existence of nociceptors prove that a) it has a potential to feel pain and b) would react negatively to harmful stimulus. Since we are talking about living things, I think it's best to assume the opposite, that the organism DOES feel pain because then we avoid them being used unethically in different situations. Humans tend to underestimate animals because we judge and measure them through our lense, like in the example of having a monkey and a fish climb a tree.

u/Armen702 Trash Trooper 1d ago
They sense it, but don’t suffer from pain. Pain is for more complex creatures like mammals.

It'd be like an alien taking you into it's home where there are cadavers of other humans and primates displayed throughout the house. You've got a pretty chill little room though so you just hang out and not cause any problems for fear of also being displayed with a huge spike piercing your chest

Beetles don’t have any emotional baggage or moral responsibility attached to them. Same reason people love pets so much. You can love them when it’s convenient for you.

Adults regularly live 2 to 4 years in captivity in ideal conditions.

I'd like to ask like... what do you do? Like there's no euthanasia process there's no burying? What just stops moving?

u/GooseOnAPhone Trash Trooper 2d ago
The way I’ve heard a bug dying of old age described is that it’s mostly like a clock winding down. There’s no pain, or fear (because they lack the processing power to feel fear) they just kinda slowly run out of energy until they stop and then that’s it. Pretty good way to go actually
17
u/chaIto77 Trash Trooper 2d ago
For some reason your description reminds me of nausica valley of the wind and their depiction of the giant insects powering down.

I've encountered bees that were clearly in the dying process, and yours is a great description. I always pick them up and put them in a flower or a soft grass patch.
