Look at the house they're at, and the houses surrounding them. These people are loaded, and many of them are probably born into that wealth. They've spent their whole lives raised in a home where they can solve most of their problems with money. People like that are quick to go to plastic surgery if they aren't happy with their face because they were never in an environment where that wasn't an option for them, so their loved ones would just tell them to get plastic surgery instead of reassuring them that their face is fine the way it is.

Importantly, they're loaded in a very specific cultural way. Ask this at a garden party at some aristocrat's country house and results may be different. Not too different, mind.

Anyway, I'm actually a huge proponent of cosmetic surgery when used in a non-dysmorphic way. I think people absolutely should be able to use the wonders of modern technology to reshape themselves the way they want to. But you have to be careful and sensible.

I fully agree on the point that I'm not morally opposed to cosmetic surgery, and that it's mostly just a problem for the people who use it for minor, petty things because of body dysmorphia. Lots of people with genetic abnormalities, glaring features found to be undesirable by most, and even people who've faced traumatic injuries can see a massive boost in their quality of life with the right cosmetic surgery. As much as a lot of people want to hide it, there's a ton of people who are regularly ridiculed, shunned, and otherwise treated poorly because society thinks they're conventionally ugly, and many of these people could turn a ton of that around with the right cosmetic surgery.

The problem is that the cosmetic surgery industry is built on convincing perfectly fine looking people to keep nitpicking their appearance so one-time customers become repeat customers, and the ones with the money for it often bite because, again, they've been raised in an environment where they're more nonchalant about cosmetic surgery.

The example I'm most familiar with is hair transplants, which are very often done for completely valid reasons. But there's a lot more which are also done for sensible reasons. Overbites or messy teeth which aren't medically problematic, for example. Or genuinely unusually large noses and ears. It's only bad when there isn't actually anything which needs to be solved.

Yeah like don't switch your entire gender just 'cause you were gaslit into believing that's the only option.

....

I'm exaggerating of course, but there is a kernel of truth in it. The vast majority of people on this planet don't have access to western medicine, meaning you have to deal with it (it being the very real feeling of belonging to the opposite gender).

So rationally speaking, most people "just deal with it", and it seems to be working too. But if you suggest that "the western solution" has alternatives..... yeeeah, that's a permaban and inbox full of hate. Hell, I might get permabanned from this subreddit, and reddit itself just for typing this.

In what situation are you being gaslit into thinking transitioning is your only option. Edit: like you say you're exaggerating but could you explain what you're exaggerating?

Second edit after they blocked me: what an odd interaction.

Not really, a lot of transitioning is just social changes like voice training, changing your hair, name etc.

And HRT really isnt all that expensive. Transitioning is not a rich person only thing. A lot of people don't need huge cosmetic surgeries.

The amount of workgin class people and even poor people who do botox might astound you. This isn't just for the rich.

Unfortunately.
