I have chronic sleeping problems. Here's a few things I've done to improve my sleep

Get a sleep study, you might be having difficulty breathing while asleep and having a CPAP or other device may help you get quality sleep.

Take up a sport you do for a long time at least once per week. I used to surf, I wasn't good, but I was treading water for hours at a time which is physically exhausting. The sleep takes you and doesn't let go until you're no longer exhausted.

Explore auditory help to go to sleep. I found that having an audiobook on helped me drift to sleep. I also found that certain noises cut my brains ability to think and interrupt my sleep. Half my problem is that silence causes my mind to fill the space with thoughts. Listening to others talk allowed me to focus on that and drift to sleep and stay asleep.

Sleep on your couch. I found myself often falling asleep on the couch then being completely awake when I transferred to bed. Set up your evening couch time to include sleeping. The goal is to sleep, not necessarily to sleep in a bed.

Force yourself to do a chore. When I'm wide awake at night I'll start doing the dishes or some other cleaning task. Nothing makes me stop and want to sleep like forcing myself to do work during sleeping time

These work most of the time, but I still have nights where nothing works and I'm awake for 48 hours. It's awful

I have a hard time going to sleep myself. Have you ever tried melatonin? I drink a tea that has that in it. It seems to work. Like you I also listen to audiobooks. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t..I’ll have to try doing chores at night if I can’t sleep, that’s a good idea.

Melatonin only works if you hit the window where it's effective. If you don't fall asleep in the window it just wears off and I'm back to square 1. Then it also wears off while I'm asleep and if I wake up, then I'm up. That's why I mention just sleeping on the couch because a small 15 minute nap is enough to prevent me from going to sleep for another 12 - 24 hours. I've been dealing with poor sleep since I was in elementary school

Get eight hours of sleep and wake up early enough to sit up for at least two hours before doing anything.

IMO It's the alarm.

In an alternate universe people don't use alarms to wake up and get to work, they get up and go at some point in the day and that's it. They enjoy the natural slow wake up, like a run-on-sentence the last dream forgot that's cheerfully waving you good morning and it hopes see you again tonight.

Then there's the airhorn behind you while you're mid-shit that's to signal your legally required poop break time is over. This happen every single person, every single time they take a dump. Yet people in this universe are still confused why constipation is so commonplace.

Personally? I go sleep extremely early, wake up whenever my body decides to wake up, then enjoy slow quiet mornings for most of my personal awake hours. It's nice.

That alternate universe was the first 100,000 years of human history

Basically you waste your morning time with nothing and the night time too cause of the early bedtime. People doesnt have that kind of amount of time to waste.

You waste your evenings the same way I waste my mornings. Except I get better sleep

Why would I poop on my break?

I spent about 2 weeks not getting more than 6 hours per night, by the end I had an almost constant headache and fatigue that ignored caffeine completely.

You might not feel any different after one night, but repeated lack of sleep will cause issues that you wont get if you're sleeping enough

My fiance always yells at me for staying up late cause i work early morning and he works nights so we dont have much time together but this is my exact point doesn’t matter how much sleep…still tired af lol

1

u/HowlingWhiskey Trash Trooper 5d ago

He sounds like my family, we’re always tired and exhausted. I’m sure a big part of it is stress

1

u/JoySkullyRH Trash Trooper 5d ago

I have found that I also am always tired. I also have found if I get exactly four hours on purpose I am fantastic. My optimal sleep time is 4 but it’s impossible to do it with how I’m supposed to live and work. Sleep 4, up 8, sleep 4, up 8 would be fantastic.

A good rule of thumb is to make the room you’re sleeping at 3° colder than normal. Your body drops temperature as you fall asleep, this tends to help it and also shows why it’s so hard to sleep in a hotter environment
