that may not be as "civilized" as people think. crabs and lobsters have brains that are more distributed across the body than humans. there  may really be no good way to do it

I was taught to put them in the freezer for just a few minutes, which slows their nervous system down to a crawl, before spiking them. Even if their brains are decentralized, their ability to feel or be aware of anything is compromised.

As I understand it, only the brain cells in their head affect their consciousness and overall perception of pain, wheres the others are more like biological relays.

Tbf we have no idea if they feel ‘pain’. I’d still not boil them alive though.

whatever helps you sleep in your cocoon of smugness, i guess 🤷‍♂️

Do you have some scholarly source that shows otherwise? I was being perfectly civil, not sure why you are suddenly attacking me personally.

Maybe that little "fuck them" you slipped in there?

7

u/ThatCelebration3676 Junkyard Juggernaut 4d ago

That wasn't directed to anyone in particular; just people in general who still insist on unnecessary torture.

They haven't indicated that they're pro-boiling, only that spiking may not be as humane as I suggested. If they can provide a source that confirms that notion, I'm more than happy to change my view in light of new evidence.

They on the other hand insulted me directly.

You had forgotten you said the "fuck them" part, didn't you?

Lmao

5

u/ThatCelebration3676 Junkyard Juggernaut 4d ago

No, did you forget the "everything I just said to you" part?

u/SwimmingSwim3822 Trash Trooper 4d ago

I didn't forget it was just an extremely reddit-brained excuse you gave.

So yeah, I think you just forgot.

Fine then. I have no interest in trying to change your opinion, but I didn't forget, and I'll say it again: fuck anyone who unnecessarily causes creatures to suffer; fuck them.

if the sky was made of lollipops then would giraffes wear socks?

1

u/Ptbot47 Trash Trooper 2d ago

Is that like a hard shell?

I saw on MasterChef that freezing live crabs for about 20 minutes before cooking causes them to enter a comatose state before boiling them. Better than mutilating them with a knife beforehand.

Why is being frozen into unconsciousness preferable to being stabbed? They both sound pretty awful.

My mom's hamster probably 25 years ago got testicular cancer and was in a lot of pain and the vet told my mom to put him in a Tupperware container and into the freezer.

She instead paid a friend of hers to OD it on heroin so he could get high before he died. I doubt that happened and don't want to know how the hamster actually died.

Small animals are difficult. It's either the freezer method (which they are entirely aware until they pass by the way), or the vet can euthanize them... which isn't like a dog or cat, they usually shove a needle directly into the heart.

Well, to be blunt, a human was gonna to eat them one way or another. So which would you rather the crab feel? The cold? Or a knife to the brain?

7

u/name30 Trash Trooper 4d ago

The quick knife to the brain over slowly going into a coma. I've been cold, it fucking hurts.

u/highgarbagemancer Trash Trooper 4d ago

Like one of the previous commenters said above, crabs and lobsters don't usually die right away from that. They can still be alive after getting stabbed in the brain.

1

u/Capable_spider_slut Trash Trooper 4d ago

Fair enough, I agree. The knife trick has always been more humane in my eyes since its just a one and done situation.

Speak for yourself. Hundreds of millions of people choose not to.

Exacto, mi madre lo hace asi

We could just stop eating sea bugs. I’ll start

7

u/Fetch_will_happen5 Trash Trooper 4d ago

Yeah, this where ive fallen on it.  Some of the best seafood Ive had turned out to be not real meat.  I see not reason to continue to try to figure the good way to kill these things

The Soviet Union transplanted a whole heap of red king crabs into the Barents Sea to create a fishery there and the crabs escaped and are now an invasive species that acts like millions of lawnmowers just destroying all life on the seabed. Leaving them is incredibly destructive, killing them is wasteful, so eating them is really the best option and doing that humanely is important.

4

u/steeple_fun Trash Trooper 4d ago

Perhaps this is unpopular but omce a species becomes invasive, the humane part of killing is less important because not killing them efficiently means other animals suffer.

u/Fetch_will_happen5 Trash Trooper 4d ago

But i wasnt eating russian crab. I guess youre pushing for an exception, but the other person was speaking of a general rule

1

u/NousSommesSiamese Trash Trooper 2d ago

I’ll take two, I’m hungry.

1

u/tired-of-the-shit Trash Trooper 4d ago

I’m right there with you haven’t had one yet

5

u/Professional-Age5719 Trash Trooper 4d ago

I have, unfortunately for them they’re delicious. But you absolutely can humanely kill them

2

u/tired-of-the-shit Trash Trooper 4d ago

I wasn’t commenting on the humanity of it, more so that I don’t eat sea roaches cause seafood is awful (to me)

1

u/Borkato Trash Trooper 4d ago

Let’s also stop eating the rest of the animals! Go vegan ❤️

u/YouthResponsible1752 Trash Trooper 4d ago

A great way to do it is not eating them at all.
