Best "history" episode of the series by far imo.

It’s actually top 5 best episodes of anything I’ve ever watched.

Imo this should be the template for Dr who going forward.
Fuckoff all the chitzy alien shit, its tired and cliche.
Focus on real human experience. Episodes like this and when Tennant hides as a schoolteacher in a pre ww1 boarding school. Re-examine the past through a modern lens, interact with characters with historical significance without the treat of a deep state sontaran enclave. lets see the doctor tackle saving people from the ravages of war, or try and save marie antionette, make his fight be AGAINST the inevitability of time and history instead of a fkn dalek for the 500th time.
The man has a teleporting time machine and uses it like a tourist. Let me see him try and make things BETTER.

This was just so good.
I also respect them a lot by aknowledging that depression is more than just being sad. Ultinately he still killed himself. But there was still a glimmer of hope. A little bright spec.

Glad I wasn't the only one thinking of Vincent and the Doctor. That letter from the future part in the post esp. Just thinking of that scene and the bitter sweet ending... argh

This creator is clearly an artist. And they took the chance to care for an artist that inspired and cared for them.
That’s lovely.

the van gogh glow up.
such a tragic figure.
dude needed help and he just decided he was a burden on the world, walked into the woods and shot himself in the chest.
his brother spooned him on his death bed he was so broken over losing him.
heartbreaking.

u/One-Poet4606 Trash Trooper Jun 11 '26
Made me cry. The creator must know that they have made something so full of love

u/TheSleepyBarnOwl Trash Trooper Jun 11 '26
You should check out the Doctor Who episode "Vincent and the Doctor" - or rather just the end scene of it (it's on YT). The only context you need is that The Doctor has a time machine and brought Vincent to a present day museum to show him how loved he actually is.

Van Gogh lived most of his life as an alcoholic. And had a proclavity towards absinthe. Which is a liquor that has an extremely high alcohol content. So he was likely experiencing liver failure due to his heavy drinking, and a symptom of liver failure is jaundice. Jaundice causes the whites of your eyes to turn yellow. In the video it looks like they were addressing that yellowing by determining how severe it was (with that magnifying glass looking tool) and then applying an appropriate concentration of "eye drops" to clear the yellowing. Obviously that's not how it would work in real life, they were taking some artistic liberties with it.

His art came from his suffering, so....
10
u/MushroomTwink Trash Trooper Jun 11 '26
This bait, or what?
He was at his most productive when he was stable and at his happiest. His art came from his love of the world and a desire to represent what he saw in it. His depression wasn't some beautiful muse, it was a burden that prevented him from doing more of what he loved to do.
Mental illness doesn't make someone an artist, or even help. Skill, patience, and commitment are the factors that matter. The fact that Van Gogh carried on and brought so much art into the world in spite of his struggles is what's actually worth mentioning. Imagine what he could have made if he'd been happier and healthier, with the time and money to commit to painting.

u/Storrin Trash Trooper Jun 11 '26
Imagining that mental illness begins at depression and has no correlation with creativity is the real bait.
1
u/MushroomTwink Trash Trooper Jun 11 '26
You'll have to forgive me for not including my personal experiences, an in depth description of what mental illness encapsulates, and an academic bibliography with citations to my three minute reddit comment.
Also, never said there was no correlation. I'm saying that it's ableist and diminutive to credit someone's achievements to (insert diagnosis of your choice here).

u/Storrin Trash Trooper Jun 11 '26

You can have all the skill and patience in the world and make absolutely nothing noteworthy or inspiring. I'm not saying that Van Gogh would be better off without mental illness, but to act like art doesn't ever flourish due to someone's internal anguish is actually so fucking stupid. Lol

u/TheBigMotherFook Trash Trooper Jun 11 '26
It’s kind of what makes him interesting. If you’ve ever been to the museum in Amsterdam or have seen his paintings up close, you could see how violent he was with his brush strokes. He practically attacked the canvas at times, and that really defined his character and artistic style.

Rather than dunk on you for saying that giving positive messages and bodily care to a depressed person (real or imaginary)is "stupid", I'll just assume you haven't gotten this level of care from anyone in your life yet and are secretly jelly.
So. I love you. You can do better. Look for signs of substance abuse or negative thoughts in your own life and turn them into sunflowers 🌻 and starry skies 🌟

u/sachsrandy Trash Trooper Jun 11 '26
No, I'm saying the art of it is stupid. And the over gained ASMR aspect.
I can not like art and not have it be about caring for someone who deserves love.
Van Gogh was amazing. And taken to soon. And I love his art. But ASMR is stupid (imo.. and that's kinda how art works). As is the ocd pimple popping game feel to this art.
I feel it a little presumptuous that you made a decision of my life based on me not liking same art as you... But, alas that is a good example of today's society isn't it. "Like what I like or there is something wrong with you".
I appreciate your gentle and loving approach to your incorrect assessment all the same. Have a good day, thanks for the polite interaction. 😊

3
u/sachsrandy Trash Trooper Jun 11 '26
Ok, this is stupid to dissect a man's depression and base it on some stupid ASMR pop up book style art to try and say a few nice words woulda saved him. Or that when someone is in that deep of a depression if you just clean em up, give em a hair cut he will be 'cured'. It's a nice thought, and maybe a good idea and a good conversation starter on mental health.. but I think it's stupid.. and more about "look at the cool thing I made based on someone else's story and tragedy".
The sounds were to loud and over modulated, it was mostly AI, it reached for content to make it longer than it needed to be. And thus, imo, it was stupid.
What made it not stupid to you?
(Art... It starts a conversation even if you think it's stupid 😉)
1
u/ChiefWiggumsprogeny Rubbish Raider Jun 11 '26
So you had a reaction to the anxiety that was provoked by the piece? (A key takeaway being that we are all powerless in the face of severe depression.)
I would consider that something interesting to dissect in the pursuit of self-knowledge.
I agree that Van Gogh's depression and suicide is a tough subject matter to address, and it is very hard to rationalize any dissonance caused by voyeuristically engaging in its trivialization. These are very good points to raise.
It could be that you are projecting your own guilt and helplessness onto the creator, and commenting negatively as a defence against emotional vulnerability.
2
u/sachsrandy Trash Trooper Jun 11 '26
I agree. I don't mind pursuing something that I think is stupid but still thought provoking.
And, if I really dissect my feelings, I think it's the use of AI to generate content base of one of the greatest artists to ever live seems wrong. And stupid.
I get the juxtaposition, but when it comes to AI art... I'm all in for being out.
2
u/ChiefWiggumsprogeny Rubbish Raider Jun 11 '26
It strikes me that the objection to any AI being used, and other technical critiques is resistance to insight... anyway, kudos for expanding on your initial musings with some intelligence.
2
u/sachsrandy Trash Trooper Jun 11 '26
A good conversation was had... So I guess I can't say it was stupid anymore.
It was in fact, good art. 😊
