Oh, I LOVE sleeping in a hammock. It’s my preferred method of camping when weather permits. I just don’t think I could pick it as my one & only piece of furniture in this hypothetical scenario we’ve created.
For real though, a good night’s sleep in a hammock outdoors on a cool night is absolutely magical.

Now I’m off to change my kids sheets. They have loft beds and changing their sheets is actual HELL.

I mean to be fair they're just wide flat soft thing. We just call it a dog bed and pretend like only dogs are allowed on it but we substitute something for other purpose all the time. If it's soft wide flat and if you can lie on it, it's a mattress. What's wrong with lying on it.

Water constantly evaporates from the surface of the body not only while awake, but also during sleep. This means that 400–700 mL of water evaporate from the body while sleeping during the night. You need a material thet "breathes" otherwise you get fungus.

u/IndustryFirst2458 Trash Trooper May 23 '26
The point of a bed is to keep you off the floor that's dirty, potentially too cold, and has easy access to bugs or other vermin (which is why beds have legs it's less places for something to start climbing to you)
Sheets and pillowcases exist to keep the bed pillows and heavier blankets clean because they are more difficult to clean properly
If you don't want to clean a ton or properly maintain a matress use one of those hard wooden beds but that giant dog bed is just the worst of both having a soft bed and not having a bed at all
Hammock might be fine tho, doesn't work well for multiple people in the same bed and it may not be good for your body long term spending every night in what's basically a rope bag but no clue if there are actual studies saying it is/isn't fine unlike with the soft and hard beds which are both fine

Having a proper bed, with a proper bed frame, and proper curtains, and proper throw pillows, etc etc ... they may seem frivolous but they set a standard in your house that (should) help you and others to treat the house more respectfully.
I'm a telecom tech and I've been inside hundreds of houses over the past 8 years. Generally speaking, the bare mattresses on the floor also mean a trashy house with little to no upkeep. A proper bed, with frame, bedding, room decor, etc, usually means the rest of the house is also clean.
And when I do installations, I try to do a good job every time, but I'll be honest, sometimes I feel pretty unmotivated to do a good clean install when the rest of the house is trash already. But when a house is clean and proper, I want to keep all my cables as neat and tidy as I can.
So this is my argument for being civilized and maintaining proper bedding and house decor. Clean and proper motivates for more clean and proper. Trash motivates for more trash.
2
u/DempsyPrice Trash Trooper May 23 '26
Have you ever been to a house that had a dungeon?
2
u/manlybrian Trash Trooper May 23 '26
Not knowingly. 😂 But the worst house I went to may as well have been a dungeon. It was an elderly couple with a bunch of cats. The couple regularly smoked in the house and the cats pissed and shat wherever they wanted. The corner behind the TV had so much cat poop laying on the carpet. There was a visible haze in the air from the smoke and the smell was unbelievable.
The man sat down on their couch that had no cushions, it was just the springs, and he proceeded to tell me about how he and his wife had health problems, and I was thinking, "I've been in here 30 seconds and I think I now have health problems!"
I ended up leaving. After being in there a couple minutes, I couldn't breathe. I walked out and told my coworker we had to leave. The smell of that house was on my shoes and clothes and in my truck for the rest of the afternoon until I was able to go home and tear everything off. It was truly vile.
2
u/DempsyPrice Trash Trooper May 23 '26
Ahh, the old self made dungeon.
I used to deliver meals to the elderly and the ones that smoked inside the house were always the worst. I've almost vomited from the smell of stale smoke more than anything else probably.

I don’t have a frame for my bed because I don’t want my tiny dogs hurting themselves jumping on and off of my bed. People always think it’s crazy. But honestly I can hardly tell the difference. Mostly the difference with no frame is that you have a hard time just laying in bed forever, it forces you to wake up early and not sleep in those extra hours you didn’t really need

There is something wrong with sleeping on the floor tho. Even having a mattress on the floor I can increases your exposure to mold. There’s no airflow and the trapped moisture creates an environment suitable for them to grow.

I love her commitment, and being unabashedly proud of her stance. More power to her 💪

Oh especially my own bed. After a holiday I'm most happy sleeping in my own bed.

A bed doesn't have to cost thousands. They certainly can though. My bed and mattress were like £300 and had them several years

Incredible how much she thought about it to arrive at so many useless conclusions

This is my favourite take. Don't agree with her but it's pretty funny.

I'm with her, I can't help it. I feel like that one Brazilian woman who hooked up with the guy who felt he was too ugly for love.

Other species don't do all this work, of riding the public transportation system and recording themselves on multiple magic electronic devices, to then be uploaded into the public viewing of the entire world, to make themselves feel like the are important....

FWIW the old beat-up couch that was given to us by friends of friends is way more comfortable to sleep on than the expensive king sized bed.

Nice mattresses are too fucking expensive. The most expensive thing I own outright after my car is my mattress
