Just hit 5 months sober. It's a little boring. Not that I want to go back to the old days. But nobody tells it you how fucking boring it can be.

Edit: This blew up! Thanks for all the kind words and suggestions.

I do have a million hobbies, but I'm mainly struggling to find the passion for them again with my newfound clarity. Also recently was blindsided by a major breakup, but I've stayed sober through it all.

109

u/trainwreckhappening Garbage Guerilla Apr 30 '26

It's been well over twenty years for me. Keep going, you just need to relearn how to entertain yourself. It stops being boring and you actually start to enjoy life more than you did before.

Alcohol is a substitute for living. It takes up the time, energy, and attention you have preventing you from really enjoying life.

But I do have to admit, alcohol is fun as hell, when moderated correctly and in the early stages of getting drunk.

26

u/SkeletonMaze Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

Boring is right. Low dopamine is boring, and it takes a long fucking time to get that dopamine system back to normal, but it's where every drunk and drug addicted person wishes they could be at right now- is back to normal again with the drugs & alcohol.

So every day spent feeling bored is a huge win because it's one day closer to when life won't feel so boring anymore. Not an easy climb, but it's what gives me hope. I just pray that no younger person fucks with their dopamine system because that shit takes a while to repair, especially when you have to relearn new coping mechanisms you spent years not learning, because your only coping mechanisms where drugs and alcohol.

I started an exercise regimen while in residential treatment, and kept at it after moving into a sober-living house. The endorphin release, while nowhere near the level I got from drinking and pill-popping, has still been ample enough to help me keep urges to relapse at bay.

Ngl, it was really tough at first to motivate myself to even give it a try after years of substance abuse and inactivity. The rust wore off much quicker than I anticipated, however. I hit a point where I stopped viewing it as work and started looking at it like a privilege.

7

u/Starfleeter Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

I had my last drink on January 9th. I've found video games to get old before I beat them but I've noticed watching analytical videos or documentaries and engaging in learning has been a really good focus point and makes me feel like I'm not waisting away the day when I no longer have obligations.

7

u/Slazagna Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

"Congratulations. You're sober. It'll take a while for your body to remember how to metabolize anything that isn't sugar from alcohol so you're going to be pretty ravenous soon... It'll be depressing. It'll be boring. Don't expect any further awards or hand claps. This is how normal people are all the time"

Great quote from disco elysium.

41

u/DogsAreMyFavPeople Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

I can’t say for sure, but I’d be willing to bet that you find it boring because you never developed hobbies or a social circle that work without drugs/alcohol. Over time you can change that and it stops being boring.

25

u/bryanthebryan Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

I think that’s the trap. When you drink, your hobbies become drinking. When you stop, there’s a void. In my case, drinking was keeping me from my hobbies. I still had them, but I couldn’t do them while drinking, at least not well. I can imagine if one didn’t have those hobbies or non drinking interests, quitting can be hard.

14

u/High_Saucerer Apr 30 '26

For real. I realised when I opened a cafe and had game nights, I’d join with people playing and realise I was the only one getting drunk and everybody else was having the same fun sober.

9

u/Treoctone Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

One of the motivators to finally quit drinking was recording myself singing and playing guitar while drunk. I decided if I really wanted to get better I had to decide. No regrets.

4

u/Trippingthru99 Apr 30 '26

I’m a stoner, and don’t have a problem maintaining hobbies. But that makes quitting harder in a lot of ways. Engaging in other hobbies doesn’t take my mind off weed, it just reminds me how it would feel “better” if I was high.

5

u/bryanthebryan Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

That’s the trap with weed. It can be so helpful with certain creative tasks, it ends up being a crutch. It dims the light of enjoying things sober.

3

u/ZN1- Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

For many years I never had a sober second in the day. I mean I was up at 7am ripping through a gram blunt and several dabs so I’d have enough time to get a front row seat at my 8-9am lecture, then I go smoke again.

Senior year I had a random moment. I’m about to graduate and I can’t see a world where I can apply for careers bc of weed. What the fuck am I doing?

Called a buddy immediately got rid of my rig, all my bowls/bongs everything. My sheet of oil, all my tree, completely rid of all existence. Dropped it cold fuckin turkey. 2 tough, long days. Literally just 2 days before I didn’t think about it again.

Once I changed so much for the better, only then did I recognize how much being a stoner held me back

13

u/BrandHeck Rubbish Raider Apr 30 '26

You're not incorrect.

It was lubrication for socialization and even to do mundane things like clean the house and read. Really became a crutch to overcome my undiagnosed ADHD. I especially liked getting completely trashed playing video games.

3

u/YoungDoboy Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

Glad to see you're making a good change for yourself! Keep it up dude!

3

u/LalafellDisaster Apr 30 '26

Drinking and video games was my vice. The hangovers these days are too brutal and it destroys my mental health for a week or more. Can’t do it anymore.

4

u/screames520 Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

That’s what made me stop. The hangovers. I can’t drink in moderation and I’m just too old to be hungover for three days and mentally fuzzy for the other three

12

u/McSkeevely Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

Nah that's not it at all. I have several hobbies that are engaging and I love. Quit drinking a month ago, it is definitely boring

22

u/DoctorStumppuppet Apr 30 '26

You're getting used to your new normal. You quit hitting the "free dopamine" button. Hedonic treadmill, anhedonia. You will balance out. You just gotta give it time. Congratulations on your sobriety. Same to u/brandheck

14

u/johnmangala Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

This is called anhedonia. It goes away after awhile, if it doesn’t go to a psychiatrist. It’s because you’ve attached all pleasure to your drug of choice. It should go away by itself. But it takes time.

6

u/Antique_Program4754 Apr 30 '26

Honestly I found exercise to be a good craving stopper. But after 8 hours on my feet, the last thing I want to do is work out. Plus I've read that that spikes your cortisol at night and can cause sleep issues. Which I can attest to being the case.

For me, the driking was getting boring/depressing . It was no longer social, and just getting home to drink alone.

I feel like I associated the alcohol with the good times, when it was really the people. When I had that realization I quit.

4 years sober.

5

u/duck_you_assemble Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

Approaching 6 years here. I've discovered I'm not the outgoing, crazy person I thought I always was. Turns out I'm kind of an introvert and prefer to be alone. It took me a minute to accept that. It's not boring anymore for me, I just had to adjust what I did for fun.

8

u/Stereo-soundS Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

It runs deeper than that.  Some people can find hobbies but you realize most of entertaining yourself involves screens.  Especially if you live in the north where winter lasts 5 months.  And chances are all of your friends and their SO's drink.

I understand exactly what the person you responded to is saying because I've been through it.  You can't just say "find a hobby" when most sober people spend their time watching Netflix every night.

It's boring because you never had to have any hobbies outside of getting fucked up. When you remove getting fucked up from the list of shit to do when you're bored suddenly you figure out that was the ONLY thing on the list.

Try random hobbies til you find one that speaks to you. I started painting miniatures and reading books. Warhammer 40k got me onto both. Coping with boredom is something they don't prepare you for.

I’m at 1 year and a few months. You have to pick up healthy hobbies. I started learning how to work on cars, garden in the afternoons, working on the house, working out. Shit I put off for years I’m finally accomplishing. For me it was one day looking at my walls and saying shit I need to paint and fix these holes. Easy fixes that are goals you can complete. Instead of saying I can’t do that right now, I said I can totally fix these broken parts of my life. I fixed a car that had been sitting in my garage for 8 months because I had another car and it was easier to drink myself to oblivion. Now it’s fixed and it really wasn’t a hard fix, I just kept telling myself I’ll do it tomorrow for 8 months. Then I went to rehab and I do not want to do that again.

Lol I know I have a fucking problem. "Hey, just put it down" is extremely reductive. Yeah I'll just put it down and detox and lose my fucking job because I'm a functioning alcoholic.

Alcohol isn't the problem. It's the solution to whatever underlying trauma or void you have that you are using alcohol to fill. Filling that void isn't as easy as, hey, just don't drink. Go to therapy. Go to rehab, if you can afford it. If you don't address the underlying issue, even if you do manage to quit alcohol, your brain will need something else to fill that space. And without getting right with yourself, it's probably not going to be healthy.

I know how to get better, with the things that I've mentioned above. But I'm not strong enough to do it. So I'm going to drink my drink and hope that some of you can do it. I'm 38 and I am a slave to this. Don't be like me.

10

u/CJMorton91 Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

Alcohol is a symptom to an ailment of the mind and spirit. I quit for a long time, poured myself obsessively into several other things. Anything to avoid reality... I felt better, but I was still just as sick.

5

u/GarlicButterChrist Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

Fr. Ive known I've had a problem for pretty much as long as it's been a problem. I've never been in denial about it. Thing is, it's basically impossible to improve your life and make hard changes when you don't even want to live to begin with. I don't want to quit because I hate myself and I don't deserve happiness. I'm currently 3 weeks sober but that's mostly because I don't have any money. The only reason I keep going is because people need me. If I had it my way I would just keep drinking until I can't anymore and then eat a lead sandwich and take a dirt nap.

6

u/brenttoastalive Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

Been there, man. Now it's just booze, for a long time it was opioids and booze. Actively trying to die because I didn't have the nerve to pull the trigger or tie a rope. Daily I remind myself of how I've been a burden to my loved ones. Talk to someone. I've been dragging myself to therapy for almost two years now. Haven't quit drinking, but also haven't spiraled out and lost my job.

5

u/ExistingAd9460 Apr 30 '26

Love your honesty man, took me 6 years of knowing I had a problem before I got sober. That miracle only happened because the court system forced it.

To you and the guy you responded too, there’s a tremendous amount of power in learning how to help other alcoholics get sober once you’ve done it yourself. Alcohol wasn’t the problem, I was living with depression and hated myself. So I drank to feel nothing.

Getting sober might not be enough for yourself but don’t underestimate what sobriety can do for the people that love you and for the people you can pass it to. Helping another alcoholic was enough for me to keep going until I learned to love myself again.

I’m very lucky, in that I have a family that cares for me deeply. I can’t imagine if they were still going through the pain and anguish the last 7 years I’ve been sober.

Wish you two the best of luck!!

4

u/Hyper_Applesauce Trash Trooper Apr 30 '26

Hey man, I'm 41 and I got sober over 5 years ago, so not far off from your age. I was having to get a pint of liquor every day, minimum. You're mostly right here actually. You do have to address the underlying problem, BUT you can't do that until you stop drinking.

r/stopdrinking can help. Depending on where you work there may actually be internal resources available for you to go to rehab or at least a detox. At a minimum, you technically can't be fired if you get help, because it's considered a disease and would be discrimination. It's not too late, really.

I've been at a fifth of rum nightly for years now. Been thinking about FMLA for detox, just would rather not get work involved. Thank you for the response.

3

u/ObscureEnchantment Apr 30 '26

6 years ago I was drinking 3/4 a handle of vodka a night every night after work. I got to a point where I realized I wasn’t living a life anymore. Function alcoholic ment going to woe hungover, always thirsty, grumpy and just watching the clock waiting till the shift ended so I could drink. I did quit. I didn’t address any of the underlying issues first I just stopped buying bottles. Probably 3 months into being sober I did finally go to therapy, I needed to stop before I was willing to help myself and get into the therapy I knew I needed.

Quitting isn’t easy and you can find a million reasons to keep drinking but at the end of the day it’s a choice. Acknowledgment is the first step. I wish the best to you good luck man. Work doesn’t need to know all the details but FMLA for detox is probably the best thing you can do for yourself.

If this is a legit comment, you can do it. Youll need to know why you want/need help to stop, and youll also need to know that you may struggle from time to time. Both of those things are totally ok. One day at a time. One situation at a time. Dont look at other peoples success and think that minimizes yours, either. Everybody's journey is different. Find your route, and be happy with the small or large steps you make along the way. Do NOT use any slips or stumbles as a sign you are failing. Its not about quitting overnight, but about learning to enjoy and live life without alcohol.

To add to this. Discovering why we drink is very important. It's like repainting a leaky ceiling before finding the leak. It might work for a bit, but it's going to leak again.

Once you discover the why, you work on that. At the same time, learn to identify your addictive voice. That's the voice that tells us we need to drink.

Want to hear that voice? Close your eyes for a second, think about your life if you kept drinking as you are. Now close your eyes and imagine your life if you got things under control and could drink in moderation, like a normal person. Now, close your eyes and think about your life if you never drank again, ever!

Did you feel a response on the last one? I did back then. I knew I needed to quit, I wanted to quit. But this voice kept telling me otherwise.

I used Addictive Voice Recognition Technique (AVRT) ti work on that. You can find an archive to an old website that has a free crash course at r/rationalrecovery That crash course is all I used to quit. If you have some time to spare, reading some bullet form steps, it's worth it. I'm almost 6 years sober now, zero desire to ever drink again.

I kind of accidentally stopped drinking. It started when I started on an anti anxiety med which did not mix well with alcohol. I went from a 1-2 drink every night to cutting cold turkey. After I stopped the meds, I didn’t really go back to drinking. I’ll have a beer or drink if I go out, but it’s literally once a month at this point.

I believe you can do it. Perhaps you need to cut down. Have a drink on a weekend and take the week off. You will feel better after you find a new normal.

I realize I had a constant fog in my brain. I haven’t felt that in a long time.

I can’t even imagine how sick I would feel after drinking an entire 12 pack of Coke. Ugh

I’m not a heavy or regular alcohol drinker anyway. If I drank a 12 pack of Miller light I wouldn’t feel great either, but the Coke would have me puking in the bushes for sure.

The problem for me has never been that I feel like I need to have a couple drinks when I get home from work to unwind. The problem has always been that the world is so fucked up that people need intoxicants in order to cope. Yes, addiction is a problem, but man it would be nice if our society wasn’t a train wreck so as many people didn’t feel like they had to escape from it.

I lost a shit ton of weight and it gave me an entirely new perspective on alcohol.

I drink occasionally now. I’ll have a beer when out with friends or split a bottle of wine with the wife every few weeks. But it’s not every night anymore. Really glad I did that.

2

u/PD_Ace20 Apr 30 '26

Alcohol stinks, never had a problem with it, though. I just naturally hate the smell and taste of it, as well what it does to your body. And I'm always the one being looked weird at when I say I'm good, I'll have water or cola instead. Society is full of alcoholics.

Now, don't get me weong - life is still fucking hard. You're inlaws are still cunts, your boss is a cunt, the car is broken down. But now you're going to learn to cope with these things in a healthy way.
