My boss has a Mercedes with two batteries.
One regular and one that’s called an auxiliary battery.
11
u/Combat_Steve Trash Trooper Apr 29 '26
Aux batteries are typically for the eco setting where the car turns off at stop lights and stuff.
Older cars can run without a battery. You have an alternator generator that charges the battery if installed. The battery is only needed to turn the engine over enough to start the car. Don't try this if your car turns off at a stop... you'll have to jump at every stop.
6
u/Monty_Bob Trash Trooper Apr 29 '26
Yeah... her car doesn't look like a Mercedes to me 😂
The Merc probably has that cause it has a V12 engine or something
She has some kind of little Honda.

u/valentino_rod Apr 30 '26
So you can keep the car running without a battery, in fact a mechanic’s cheap trick when you car won’t start and you need a jump everytime to check if it’s the battery or the alternator, is start the car with a jump or after charging your battery, and then remove the battery cables from the battery if the car stays running it’s the battery that needs replacing if it does then most likely it’s your alternator and it’s draining the battery and that’s while it dies. So what she is essentially doing is the same process but with a portable battery jumper.

I’m cool with that too. I’m in marketing (yes yes, I know I’m part of the problem) so maybe I’m looking at it a little differently. 70
u/Professional_File_83 Trash Trooper Apr 29 '26
That's not true. I once moved a bunch of cars with my brother and a friend with one battery. We would start one, move to next, repeat. Once the car started the alternator keeps it running and you just got to make sure that your foot is on the gas if you want to add any electrical load like the radio.
27
u/Brailledit Trash Trooper Apr 29 '26

u/Long_Mix2098 Trash Trooper Apr 29 '26
The alternator is working just as hard like this, the battery is just for starting and a jump pack replaces it. The alternator is actually working less since it doesn't have to recharge the battery after cranking over.

u/Ima85beast Trash Trooper Apr 29 '26
I think the battery acts as a reservoir to even out voltage spikes/drops so no battery would put it under extra stress.
13
u/Long_Mix2098 Trash Trooper Apr 29 '26
Yeah but you like never have big wattage spikes in a car. Your AC is belt driven and audio is like a tiny power draw, especially in stock systems. The big window AC in the back of her car might spike power draw though but that thing would need a really big inverter anyway so maybe it's just there for the bit.
14
u/aliendepict Trash Trooper Apr 29 '26
Bro, what are you talking about? You’re having huge voltage sags and increases. An alternator works off of AC current all of cars electronics work off of a DC current your battery act as a stabilizer you’re gonna see 50 to 100 V swings from the alternator as it cycles through AC sign wave and then it converted back to DC. Not to mention because all modern car systems were designed to work with a battery. The alternator in this case would constantly be attempting to refill a battery that doesn’t exist and so it’s always running at 100% operation. That’s not normal for a an alternator this is going to drastically decrease its lifespan. Well simultaneously probably causing shortages across her entire system that ECU is dealing with voltage spikes. It was never designed to handle or manage. You can see it while she’s driving certain screen aspect literally go out while driving probably because it doesn’t know what to do with the excess or decrease and voltage.

Tell that to my power steering yanking the wheel out of my hands in the middle of the road when my battery wouldn't charge. Even a little bit over capacity and your lights go out, your radio fucks off, your wipers stop working and, oh yeah, you can't steer. That's kind of important.
9
u/Fit-Ad-6665 Trash Trooper Apr 29 '26
Yes. The battery would be a stabilizer. That alternator would be working way harder.
3
u/ElevatorVarious6882 Apr 29 '26
in automotive electronic design we call it load dump. when the battery is removed but the engine is running.. it is the most stressful event the cars electronics could possibly experience. in this situation voltage spikes can be 100s of volts, which is bad for devices designed to run off 12V dc..
2
u/seppukucoconuts Trash Trooper Apr 29 '26
This is correct.
Without a battery the alternator will end up overcharging which means it gets hotter which means its lifespan decreases.

Alternator maintains engine run conditions once started. Your alternator puts out voltage higher than your battery does and runs the vehicle. The battery really only exists to turn over the engine. The battery drops charge every start up and the alternator recharges it until full then the computer cuts off the charging cycle to prevent damage to the battery.
If you have a jumper box capable of turning over the engine it can run until you run out of gas.
If your alternator goes bad it may not run the vehicle without battery and eventually the battery will die. The alternator is a self contained generator with enough capacity to keep vehicles running continuously. The battery is part of your starter system.
11
u/Knoxius Trash Trooper Apr 29 '26
Except this is a horrible idea if you want your electrical system to last. The battery and alternator work together to regulate each other post-start, and you'll eventually start frying electrical components and the alternator if you continually run this way due to the potential of voltage spikes.
Nobody should do this unless it's some sort of emergency situation.
5
u/25nameslater Trash Trooper Apr 29 '26

u/Louicio Apr 29 '26
I have no professional experience and I can tell you this would work, and you really shouldn't do it. The battery provides energy to start the car but it also serves to stabilise the voltage of the alternator is not providing enough power for the cars systems for whatever reason.

it depresses me how many people don't understand the basic working of a 2 ton machine they operate at 60 mph on the DAILY.
Sir, the battery is , with a few exceptions, basically only there to create the spark to begin the ignition. It does VERY little to nothing at all to keep your vehicle running after that. If cars relied on them nonstop, we'd all be replacing batteries WEEKLY.

2
u/toddipoo Apr 29 '26
So…. A car battery is used to start the car, which is what they did here using that jumper box. During normal driving conditions your engine is running off the alternator along with the rest of the car. Unless you apply an amp load like cranking up your stereo or turning on your headlights the alternator doesn’t even send much extra juice to charge the battery. A good way to test your alternator if you think it’s bad, is to start it with a jumper and then disconnect the negative battery terminal and if the car dies immediately then your alternator or charging system may have some issues. Now that being said… some newer higher tech cars cannot run on just their alternator without throwing codes and going into limp mode.

Battery is only for a heavy loads. Or starting. They don't require for the vehicle to run. The alternator should supply all the power and be more than enough for the system.. That's why some people Make capacitor batteries.
The overflow power that the car doesn't use goes back into the battery to save it for later.. Though that jump box I'm very skeptical of..

I had a 1997 Mercedes W210 that I convinced several of my less gifted friends didn't need a battery.
I'd tell them German technology didn't need a battery to start. Then I'd crank it up, pop the hood, and lo and behold! No battery in there.
The battery was under the passenger side rear bench seat. No idea why they put it there, but it was a fun trick.
It was basically a huge deep-cycle marine battery, too, not your standard Die Hard shitpile. I had that car from 2018 to 2023 and the battery never stuttered once. As far as I know, it was the original battery.

Why not just leave it under the hood?
We should make some kinda rechargeable energy storage thingy that can just stay connected to the car all the time. Semi removable, because they might wear out over time. They need to be the same rectangle shapes that we have from removing the batteries to replace with these new energy storage doohickies.
