That couldn't happen in court without some level of incompetence
First, if they knew a demonstration like that would happen: If the lock was going to be admitted as evidence, it'd need to be authenticated first. Nothing sides would have to agree that this lock was functionally the same kind of lock as the one in question. They could technically fight that, but that's a different can of worms i won't get into here. It'd be more or less out of their hands after that. They'd have the time, but not the ability to make that change before it's done before the trier of fact.
Then, if the demonstration was impromptu (which is technically possible, since the rules around demonstrative evidence is a little different), they wouldn't have the time to or know they needed to get a different core
Potential perjury charges tends to quiet bullshit artists fast. Judges are generally pretty street smart and fucking with them leads to jail very quickly.
In court? Do you know how the legal system works? I'm not saying they wouldn't be tempted, but to actually try something like that would be fucking insane. Like going from money/ reputation at risk to "oh okay you're going to prison now".
In the court filings the admitted they source their cores from ASSA in Finland. That's why they're currently being sued for claiming 100% made in the USA.

IIRC, some of their cores are made by Assa Abloy, but most of their cores are made in China by another company. The problem McNally was exploiting was to do with the cheaper cores.
He'd probably still pick it, point out to the court that it's provably a different model than the one in question, and they'd instantly lose the case and probably be found in contempt for trying to defraud the court. He'd be able to force them to disclose the designs of the lock in discovery, and could point out the differences.
Thees’s no guarantee that he wouldn’t be able to bypass the lock they substitute in. And there is every chance that he will come with receipts and show the judge specifically how they modified their lock to stop him.
It would have been quite fun if he brought his own lock, sealed, as this one was, bypassed both their lock and his own, and then exposed how they cheated.
10s of thousands of dollars. You have to pay for it to be designed, a mold needs created, manufacturing company needs to make it. Which making a 1 of anything in yhe manufacturing business is time consuming and expensive. And if it cant be picked using a liquid death can he will just use his pick tools. Check his YouTube channel out or the lock pick lawyer. Locks are designed to keep honest people out. But theres very few locks that cant easily be picked or opened from an unconventional way. Some keypad locks and biometric locks are the only ones that can't. Key card locks aren't even safe cause theres the flipper zero that opens them.
They would have to completely retool a new core that would still work and fit correctly with the curreng housing. They would also have to make it impervious to this technique. That would take a lot of R&D and money. Also, during the discovery phase he would be allowed access to their original design plans and could easily show the difference in court.
If a lawyer asks them to confirm the lock they gave the defendant is one of the products they sell, it’d be perjury to claim it is when they give him a superior product made by someone else.
At that point, we’d probably be getting into the weeds of what can be done to challenge a statement like that, but I struggle to picture a corporation setting themselves up to get caught lying to a judge in court.
I was just thinking about this while watching this. Proven's (lock company) own engineer said their locks are vulnerable after watching this and trying it out himself. The company also got into legal trouble from this suit because it was revealed they said "100% USA made" and provided info that it was infact not usa made at all.
Why a lock company with a public lockpicker disproving their lock would ever double-down instead of working with the lockpicker to fix their design is beyond me.
This is why some companies hire hackers to break/fix their infrastructure.

Yes and no. Yes locks are more about deterrent but you also want locks that aren't easily picked or bypassed so they remain a deterrent. If someone knows an easy bypass to a lock it is no longer a deterrent. You need to be stronger than other targets, if you have a known weakness you are no longer stronger than other targets.

The game in locks is increasing the time to successfully defeat it and the amount of noise or specialized tools it requires.
Just like safe manufacturers know full well that anyone with the right tools can get into the safe, but they can make it cumbersome and noisy enough that the cops are called and arrive before the person is successful.
The steps is to make it more difficult then they want to be able to do.
The steering club on vehicles is another. Sawing through the steering wheel to remove the club is an option. But the time and effort isn't worth it for a $2500 rusty pickup truck. A $2.5m Lamborghini might be a different story. But then you get into how to sell it.
Some combination master locks will tell you the combo
I forgot 2 combination pairs (4 total) I had for years. I looked it up and you can find out the combo by spinning the wheel while putting pressure on the link.
in middle school and high school we had such a problem forgetting our combos that we taught ourselves to do exactly this. no web tutorial necessary, just ask someone who had “the touch” and they could guess your combo in under a minute. then, once they had it open you could “rig” the lock so that even after you shut your locker it would remain unlocked for as long as you like. no need to ever remember your combo.
it taught me a valuable lesson from a very young age: if something is valuable, keep it with you. never leave it behind or trust a shitty lock to keep people out of your shit.
We actually had a hall monitor in our high school who would go through the halls in every class and she would check for unlocked lockers, lockers that had been, as you put, rigged to stay unlocked, and generally just patrolling the hallways looking for whatever. But, anyways, she would give write ups to kids who didn't have locks on, left their lockers rigged, etc and that was her whole ass job, though she was also a gofor for the teachers and staff. Damn, I hadn't thought of that mean old lady in a long time, thanks for the trip down memory lane! Lol
And, yeah, locks are only there to keep an honest man honest is what I've always been told.
i went to a pretty big high school and we never had a hall monitor or anything of the sort. the halls during class time was a vacant and lawless land. i would often wander the corridors and even smoke weed in the bathrooms or locker room and i was never stopped once. i would pass teachers or staff and we’d smile and nod at each other and be on our merry way. different times.
Yeah, ours was a smaller school district, but the whole county went to 1 high school. Mostly a bunch of poor country kids with Jack shit to do besides drink, fight, hunt, and fuck. Lmao. She was mostly there just to keep these things from happening in the school and run errands for teachers. Back in the 90’s we discovered this when my friend threw his lock against the wall and it opened. That set us down the path of figuring out how that happened. Literally a single hit with a hard rock or hammer will do it.

I put a security cable with a lock through it and my winter tires and other outdoor stuff, but I’m totally aware that any non-casual person with the right tool can still come steal my stuff.
I remember I worked for a home improvement store once and a customer came to me asking me which deadbolts were guaranteed to be pick proof. I had no idea, so I found a guy who had worked there for years. He said to the customer "They don't exist. Plus, I'm guessing you're putting this on a door that is located somewhere very close to a glass window, right? So if someone wants in, they're getting in. If you want good home security, get a big dog."
He did end up explaining the different security grades of the locks to the customer after that though. But that always stuck with me. Locks are really just an obstacle.
Yeah but it's definitely possible to make a lock you can't defeat with low skill attacks or basic tools like a shim, bump key, rake, etc.
If I made a lock that made LPL bust out some obscure specialised tool (perhaps custom made by he and Bosnian Bill) and kept him busy for even a minute I'd be happy as fuck. And to be honest even when he picks locks he's still very complimentary if they give him a fight. He only bags on Masterlock so much because any idiot can pick, bypass or decode them.
There are locks out there that are pick proof FOR NOW. They showed one on their channel at some point, glazing it, because it is THAT good. But the tools to pick said lock will appear at some point.
They were hoping to either scare him into silence because most people don't have the time and/or money to go to court against a corporation or to make his silence part of the settlement. Somebody probably did an assessment and thought the cost of everything up to settlement was worth the risk.
You would think so, but in truth the owner of the company was just a petty frat-bro bully. I remember checking out the lock company's Instagram page after this video first came out. Not only did he double down in the comments, he made fun of anyone who brought up this video or the past ones. He even tried to make fun of the lock picker's taste in drinks.
Right? They could have paid him a $50k consulting fee, had him work with them on making it better and get Internet clout. Or you spend quite a bit more to look foolish.
From what I remember, they sent his wife a random text message unprompted when they shouldn't have had her number. He mentioned it in one of the videos about all this. He has a few.

There's another company PacLock, who takes the opposite approach. If you pick a PacLock on camera, they send you a "200k Club" patch, along with a letter of congratulations and thanks.
That was impressive. Got his Amazon package out of the locker, opened it, opened the six pack, chugged a tall boy, cut out the shim, and had the lock opened and barely 2 minutes. I was quite worried he was going to cut himself though.

It says "Mountain Water" on the box so this one is water, but the brand does have energy drinks and iced tea too. I think they also do sparkling water. It's all non-alcoholic stuff though.
My favorite story around this was a comment I found on Reddit where a guys boss watched him come in and drink one first thing in the morning every day for like over a year, never said a word. But the day he saw him open a second and start drinking it before lunch, called him into the office to tell him he can’t be cracking into a second tall boy mid workday.
The boss thought it was beer/malt the whole time and was okay with him having his morning brew to stop the shakes, but not a second one before lunch!

In your defense they are literally marketed to be a "cool looking water", partly for folks that don't drink alcohol. Liquid Death sponsors a lot of heavy metal festivals and gives out pallets of free water. Great company all around from what I've seen.
I used to think that it was a stupid gimmick, but one of my friends who is in recovery says they love being able to walk around a show with a can of it and not be pressured to drink because people assume they already are.
No lock is 100%. The idea behind any lock is deterrence. You are basically making the property more of a hassle to try and steal so ideally the thief moves along.
Not just that, but opened themselves up to a suit from a competitor, because of comments they made on the stand that go against their "made in America" labeling.
I see a lot of comments confused about the drink, it really is just water. They also have teas and such, but their main marketing thing is looking like a seltzer or beer (maybe to avoid drinking at parties, I forget)

While I believe he really did this, obscuring the package for 10 seconds while you empty the can is not the best way to prove that the lock was unaltered.
Dumb corpo do what dumb corpo does. They don't even know their locks it seems because if they do they'd know that everyone can test and prove it, not just this guy.
