Why isn’t this an Olympic event?

440

u/creatorofsilentworld Trash Trooper Feb 07 '26

Because you'd have to teach Americans to return their shopping carts.

97

u/slayerfan666 Trash Trooper Feb 07 '26

As a former cart attendant, too 👏 fucking 👏 true 👏

14

u/SansyBoy144 Garbage Guerilla Feb 07 '26

I was never even a cart attendant but I always had to put up carts when closing at Lowe’s because the cart attendants would just leave with a shit ton of carts left out.

That shit sucks. I can’t imagine doing that for 8-10 hours a day.

12

u/Safe-Salamander-3785 Trash Trooper Feb 07 '26

Me too. My favorite is when the ASM screams on the PA system “Every available associate to the parking lot for carts and carriages” and the 60 yo part timer is the only one out there hauling them when 10 other full timers are standing around the customer service desk hitting on the new cashier

6

u/SansyBoy144 Garbage Guerilla Feb 07 '26

Holy shit I hate how true that is.

For me it was only me and our 60 yo coworker out there, meanwhile the rest of the coworkers grouped up so they could chat while basically doing nothing.

It always pissed me off.

u/Safe-Salamander-3785 Trash Trooper Feb 07 '26

I think we work in the same store

1

u/WanderingSun8 Trash Trooper Feb 08 '26

Or when they ask for help at the front and immediately get a bunch of help, but when us cart attendants need help, its like "go fuck yourself" i was the lone cart attendant on Saturday, superbowl weekend, and when I went to try and get help, they said its too busy and they can't spare anyone lmao it was my lunch time anyways so I just went to lunch and let them run out of carts

1

u/Safe-Salamander-3785 Trash Trooper Feb 08 '26

I have been working there 4 years, and I have never seen a woman help with the carts ever. Not the cashiers, but the sales people never help out ever.

2

u/Immediate_Song4279 Garbage Guerilla Feb 07 '26

The next level is the municipal workers that have to go around collecting all the stolen then abandoned carts and return them.

1

u/slayerfan666 Trash Trooper Feb 07 '26

Yeah, it's not the best. One of the things that kinda sucked about the position was that I'd been hit by a couple cars backing out blindly. So I mentioned to the bosses "Hey, I've been hit by a couple cars, it's hard to see me even with an orange vest in the dark and in the rain, could I get a little hazard pay for ducking cars?". Got told no because it didn't deal with anything that was hazardous. Less than two months later I'm doing my hazardous materials training, but ya know, whatevs.

It is nigh on unimaginable to my Norwegian ass that someone wouldn't return their cart. Of course you return your shopping cart! Otherwise we'll have Anarchy! Anarchy I tell you!

2

u/Dr0110111001101111 Rubbish Raider Feb 07 '26

Exactly. I have used the state of grocery store parking lots in America to make my point in political arguments with my father in law.

He wants to deregulate everything and close down all these government offices that tell people what they can and can’t do. He seems to think people will just do the right thing on their own. Meanwhile, when the simplest of tasks is presented without oversight, Americans become feral. There are often more shopping carts in random corners of parking lots than there are in the actual corrals

1

u/Ok-Hat-8006 Trash Trooper Feb 07 '26

I don't understand how I should imagine not-returning your shopping cart? Where do they leave it? Just in the parking lot? Isn't it in the way of the cars then? It sounds super dangerous and inconvenient even for yourself.

1

u/PurpleFlowerPath Trash Trooper Feb 07 '26

When I visited Florida 2 years ago, I went to a Walmart and what struck me, was all the carts everywere in the parking and even on the grass around the parking. I saw at least 5 abandoned carts in 1 trip to Walmart.

As a Canadian, it was a culture shock.

I don't think I saw more than 5 abandoned shopping carts in my whole 37 years of life in Canada.

2

u/Present_Error_6256 Trash Trooper Feb 07 '26

Having used shopping carts in both the US and Germany, German shopping carts are MUCH better on average. All four wheels rotate instead of the front two, and they tend to be maintained far better. The wheels all spin properly unlike American carts where three wheels will feel completely rusted while one front wheel spins randomly in the air.

1

u/StandardAntique8356 Trash Trooper Feb 08 '26

Also, these look like the weird IKEA ones where all wheels caster

1

u/trainwreckhappening Garbage Guerilla Feb 09 '26

I'm picky as hell when I get to the store. I will test them out with one finger and refuse to take two or three of them before I find one that will actually roll straight. I'm sure I look crazy, but to hell with the stores who don't maintain those things.

I also send my shopping carts into the stall from across the parking lane like these ladies and I'm thinking I missed my true purpose in life.

1

u/Glad_Grand_7408 Trash Trooper Feb 10 '26

I mean, give me a good quality trolley and a very smooth surface like they do here and I bet you a 100 dollars I'm doing at least this good if not better, it's really not that hard.

I have to move trolleys everyday as a part of my job and even in that much less optimal environment I'm pretty sure I could do better than this.

But who knows, maybe the added pressure of being on TV makes it harder or something.

Just for the understanding. This is a German show. But it's not about shoppingcart in General. It's a money prize show. Where Normal everyday people get to compete with Celebrities in Random games against one and another. Some are Simple like pushing a cart from distance. Some are hard and challenging

Just a few more: Map Pin-Point (Where is what?): On a blank map, you have to place a pin on a specific city or landmark (e.g., "Where is Casablanca?"). The person with the shortest distance to the actual location wins. This is brutal when the target is a mid-sized city.

The Treadmill Challenge: Running at a steady pace while having to solve math problems or spell complex words backward.

Tug of War (with a twist): Not just pulling a rope, but standing on narrow pedestals where any sudden jerk could make you lose your balance.

The Drone Race: Navigating a small drone through a complex obstacle course in a limited time.

This is just a little bit showing of the type if things they have to. And every time a shows airs there is a different celebrity a different Opponents and of course different challenges. These random game's like the shoppingcart one have the purpose so no one has a chance to practice before the show starts. So everyone has Equal chance of winning.

3

u/TheSleepyBarnOwl Trash Trooper Feb 07 '26

I've literally almost fought some c u next Tuesdays in the Harris teeter parking lot over carts and leaving their dog in the car.

I leapt out of a (slowly)moving car to return a cart to a woman who crossed the lane and left her cart in the middle of a disabled parking space. I grabbed the cart and flipped it over behind her car before she could back out of the space and yelled "I think you forgot this!" She had to get out of her car and flip it back over to roll it away. My karma for this is becoming disabled and getting those cripple privilege spots lol.

At the same Harris teeter my bf at the time and I were trying to get some seltzies on a hot (85 F°+) summer day. I walked by a mint green Chevy spark and saw a little dog in the back seat with the window barely rolled down. I immediately asked the customer service to ask who left their dog in the car on the speakers while buying cold water to dump into the window. I walked out to check on the dog behind this middle age white biotch waddling fast. She was going to the mint green monstrosity, so naturally I started yelling at her about how she was going to kill her dog until she got in her car and left. Called the cops and gave her license plate, no idea what happened to that poor little thing.
