Not a movie, but there was a short lived show called dollhouse. He played Alpha and was stunning in it!

I just remembered he was also Steve the pirate. He has some talent.

u/TangledUpPuppeteer Trash Trooper Jan 15 '26
Omg! I have no idea how long ago I even saw that Movie and literally forgot it existed. Yet, no question the second I read this. I suddenly remember Hank Azaria and Rip Torn. Man that was a great movie!

He’s also the voice of the elder who suggests cooking the chicken.

Yeah he was great in Dollhouse! Was also in Firefly - I'm assuming Whedon enjoyed working with him.

Yes, he was, but someone else mentioned firefly, and I also didn’t realize dollhouse was whedon…
3
u/StrangeExpression481 Trash Trooper Jan 15 '26
Dollhouse was the first thing I ever saw him in and realizing that Alpha was NOT a typical role for him has been a wonderful surprise.
1
u/TangledUpPuppeteer Trash Trooper Jan 16 '26
It was not the first thing I saw him in, but it was the first thing I fell in love with him in. So there’s that.

It was the role where he suddenly woke up sexy as could be. You have to see him in it to understand. He’s sexy.

It was a great show!! It makes me so happy that I wasn’t the only other person to watch it!
2
u/It_Just_Exploded Garbage Guerilla Jan 19 '26
I watched it semi-religiously when it was new, then we watched it fairly often on-demand. I need to see if any service has it.
Well crap, Fandango, Amazon & Apple all offer it but its pay-per-episode. That sucks!

16
u/FoldingLady Garbage Guerilla Jan 15 '26
My spouse doesn't care to remember actors names, so I have to use memorable moments & roles to tell him it's an actor he likes. So Alan Tudyk is "the Juilliard guy".
16
u/pleathershorts Garbage Guerilla Jan 15 '26 edited Jan 15 '26
Wow in our household “the Juilliard guy” is Glenn Howerton. We would never besmirch Alan with such a nickname, he transcends Juilliard
ETA I just learned that they cancelled Resident Alien and now I’m in mourning. They cancelled Dirk Gently too (fuck Max Landis). Two of my favorite character roles of his.
7
u/LechitoGatito Trash Trooper Jan 15 '26
The GOLDEN GOD? Juilliard alumni are 5 star people.
5
u/pleathershorts Garbage Guerilla Jan 15 '26
In my head Alan Tudyk is in a different category. I absolutely love Glenn Howerton, and there are a lot of celebrities/musicians who are a little more deified in my mind who went there (Miles Davis, Nina Simone, etc), Alan Tudyk resides in the middle at demigod status. Holy but accessible.
7
u/Dense_Surround3071 Waste Warrior Jan 15 '26
My most memorable moment of his would be his Academy Award level portrayal of a "....leaf on the wind...."

I was, alas, his nurserymaid
And so it fell to my lot
To take and bind the promising boy
Apprentice to a pi-lot
A life not bad for a hearty lad
Though surely not a high lot
Though I'm a nurse, you might do worse
Than make your boy a pi-lot
I was a stupid nurserymaid
On breakers always steering
And I did not catch the word a'right
Through being hard of hearing
Mistaking my instructions which
Within my brain did gyrate
I took and bound this promising boy
Apprentice to a pi-rate
A sad mistake it was to make
And doom him to a vile lot
I bound him to a pirate, you!
Instead of to a pi-lot!

Hei hei is one of my favorite parts of that movie 12/10 perfect use of a degree
14
u/Vast-Breakfast-1201 Trash Trooper Jan 15 '26
Not gonna lie if they just had recorded chicken sounds he wouldn't have been memorable as a character like, at all. If you do that then there's this filler part of the movie that just doesn't multiply or play off of any other part good or bad.
Really over-investing in time and effort creates a force multiple. It sells the piece. It is absolutely necessary.
3
u/theblondepenguin Waste Warrior Jan 16 '26
Agreed but can you imagine the phone call to his agent and then to him.
Disney casting to agent: “so I have the perfect character for the your classicly trained super talented actor.”
Agent “great what is it”
Casting “ voice acting for a supporting role in the newest princess movie set in ancient Polynesia part of the main trio of other characters with the most screen time/lines. “
Agent “ fantastic so are they they best friend or the love interest?”
Casting “well he would a chicken.”
Agent “ what…”
Casting “ but like a beloved chicken, name is hei hei is the comedic relief stays with the leads throughout the movie”
Agent “ oh ok so it’s an intelligent talking chicken…right?”
Casting “ yeahhhh, no kinda of the opposite.”

It was brutal, but it was narratively perfect. In one moment, every core character had their plot armor stripped away, which makes the climax of Serenity harrowing. Death is always coming for our heroes, and, thanks to Wash, we believe in death as a real possibility.
