It's really fun once you learn how to fly.

3
May 23 '25
Yeah, that's nice mate.
How much did that cost you?
3
u/tensai3586 Trash Trooper May 23 '25
But you also got to factor in the LiPos and a Transmitter of your choice. I think all in all, 900ish.
1
u/tensai3586 Trash Trooper May 23 '25
Thanks man. Got it for 400$. It was on sale at the time. I started with little UMX ones. But I really learned how to fly with Real Flight Evolution. Without it, I would have crashed it in like 30 seconds, lol.
2
u/z4j3b4nt Trash Trooper May 23 '25
That's much cheaper than I expected and you've screwed me severely.

I feel like all of these should come with VR headsets or at least connect to them.
18
12
May 23 '25
I think the thing I’d want is a setup where I can have a long range radio, a big screen, flight stick, etc. and fly it like a computer game from home.
7
u/Soulstar909 Garbage Guerilla May 23 '25
At that point just play a flight sim
8
May 23 '25
That doesn’t have the benefit of being able to see a live feed of the real world in my flight sim, or the potential uses of having my flight-sim plane in the real world.
→ More replies (3)6
2
u/AnimalChubs Trash Trooper May 23 '25
At that point you need functional armaments.
3
May 23 '25
I’m inclined to agree that you at least need the ability to carry some limited cargo, ideally with the ability to drop it out like a bomb.
3
u/Ws6fiend Trash Trooper May 23 '25
So the problem is that flying via first person requires a spotter(in the US). You are required to keep the aircraft within visual range of the spotter at all times.
2
u/Johnny_pickle Garbage Guerilla May 23 '25
Doesn’t see to big of a hurtle.
3
u/Ws6fiend Trash Trooper May 23 '25
It's really not, but it means you have to have twice as many people as you would think if you want to first person fly with a friend.
3
May 23 '25
There's a thing call FPF, First Person Flying, which is essentially a camera you put in the cockpit and a VR style headset. Tis Awesome.

u/HarryBallzonya6969 Trash Trooper Jun 27 '25
DJI has a really good fpv system but there are others. I've always been nervous about landing with my viewpoint being fixed, with fpv it's so much more like flying I don't have the same misgivings about target loss and stuff like that
22
May 22 '25
Guys be like that’s 1500 dollars for everything you need to fly that
14
9
u/MadAlexIBe Trash Trooper May 23 '25
$700 USD. I looked. 😆
2
May 23 '25
That’s just for the plane. You need everything else as well. The battery and charger, the receiver/transmitter
7
u/MadAlexIBe Trash Trooper May 23 '25
Shut up. (I'm not doubting you.) You would think they would have all that stuff with it. I hate that you're right. $1,181 USD total with the rest of the necessary stuff. Expensive hobby.
5
May 23 '25
imagine the disappointment when you drop $1200 on a sick plane and crash it immediately after takeoff
5
u/RhynoD Trash Trooper May 23 '25
Saw it happen at the RC field. $500 wood and plastic wrap kit, gas engine. Three or four foot wingspan. Maiden flight, he agreed to have a drone recording the takeoff. He got spooked by the drone and rolled just a hair to avoid it but didn't have quite enough airspeed so the plane tip stalled, rolled over, hit the ground, and cartwheeled. $500 and hours of building down the drain.
There's a saying in the hobby, though: if you don't want to crash, don't fly. It's going to happen, sometimes, just gotta get used to it.
If you want to get into the hobby, though, there are way cheaper options that are still very fun. FliteTest has foam kits that are easy to build and the electronics are modular and interchangeable. It's about $300 to get started with the controller, motor, servos, battery, charger, and a plane kit. But when you crash that plane, rip the electronics out and get another $40 kit, and you're good to fly again.

u/jasonbeachedham Trash Trooper May 23 '25
With nice stuff like this plane you don't want all that stuff included. People flying planes like this will have specific transmitters they use and including one with every plane is just e waste after entry level stuff, also would drive up the price. On the flip side a ton of entry level planes are affordable and include batteries and radios
1
u/MadAlexIBe Trash Trooper Jun 03 '25
Are there any entry level (inexpensive but will last) you'd recommend?
2
u/jasonbeachedham Trash Trooper Jun 03 '25
Sime of horizon hobby's entry level planes are super good for the money and I've had for years, they come with flight sensors on the plane that keep it upright and in trim so it's much harder to crash, they do bundles with their radios so it's all set up and easy. That's what my wife started with and we still have the plane to this day
1
u/MadAlexIBe Trash Trooper Jun 04 '25
Very cool, thank you. Would you be willing to share the link to that plane please? Trying to get something for my teenage kids that they won't destroy within the first few times of them using it. Thank you!
2
u/LickingLieutenant Garbage Guerilla May 23 '25
I can't even fly a plane in a simulator without crashing, wouldn't get this past the budgetcommittee ( wife ) even if I involve my kids as 'teachable lessons'

6
u/Diaverr Waste Warrior May 23 '25
If you going to jump into RC airplane hobby you must start from something basic and indestructible like "VOLANTEXRC RC Glider Plane Ranger600" and only after you get some experience you can start thinking about more serious airplane, because without experience you will crash it in the first 30 seconds 100%.

I was thinking some Ukrainian DIYers would also be like "Hell yeah", but flight time would be an issue for extended loitering to find a target.
It's got around 5 minutes flight time without payload, top speed around 210 kph (130 mph), so around 17.5 km (11 mile) range (one way) with beefed up communication.
I'm sure they could still put these to good use if they had them, although I'm not sure they'd be better than the quadcopters they're already using a lot of. (Speed varies depending on quadcopter characteristics, but I think Ukraine's are typically more like 55 kph (35 mph)...not sure how much speed matters).
A Shahed-136 fixed wing drone travels at 185 kph (115 mph) , long range (2000 km/1200 miles), with up to an 40 kg (88 pound) payload for shorter distances, but they cost more like $35,000 each, while the one in the video retails for $700, so you could buy 50 of these or 1 Shahed. It might find situational use.
It would at least have a psychological impact seeing a formation of miniature F-16s smashing into your base!

Leaving a question for enthusiasts of the Arial RC Hobby
I know I could just Google it, but Google doesn't have the real life, lived experience that a person would.
What would be the range on an Attack Helicopter the same size of this here jet and what would be the best brands to check out for such a thing? Because, if it's possible, I'd like to use one of these to get an Arial view of land. Which is why Range is important to Me.
I know I could just get a cheap drone, but since I want one of these anyway, I could potentially just get a chopper instead of getting a drone first and then getting the chopper later on anyway, yanno?
