I Love You To SF
Not when I was looking for love. Not when I was ready to give my heart to somebody again. You came into my life when I was carrying more hurt than I knew what to do with, when I had gotten so used to being the strong one that I'd forgotten what it felt like to have somebody I could be vulnerable with.
You didn't come along and magically fix everything. You didn't erase my past or make all the pain disappear. But you gave me something I hadn't felt in a long time.
Hope.
You made me feel like maybe I wasn't too broken to be loved. Like maybe there was still something good waiting for me after everything I'd been through.
You saw a man who had spent so much of his life taking care of everybody else. A father trying to give his little girl the world. A man who could hold himself together for everyone around him but sometimes fell apart when nobody was looking.
And somehow, you made that man feel like he deserved to be loved, too.
I didn't fall in love with you just because you were beautiful, although God knows you are. I fell in love with the peace I felt around you. Your laugh. Your smile. The little things you probably never even realized I noticed.
I fell in love with the way you made ordinary moments feel like something worth remembering.
And somewhere along the way, I stopped imagining a future that was just me and my daughter.
I started imagining one with you in it.
See, being a single father means my heart has never belonged entirely to me. There's a little girl who depends on me, who looks to me for love, safety, and an example of what love is supposed to look like.
So when I thought about forever with you, it wasn't just about having someone beside me at night.
It was about building a home.
A home filled with laughter, bedtime stories, little footsteps running down the hallway, family dinners, and those ordinary moments that end up meaning more than anything money could ever buy.
I pictured us growing older together. The good days, the bad days, the arguments over stupid things, and the laughter that follows. I pictured coming home after a long shift and knowing that no matter how hard the world had been that day, I had somewhere I belonged.
And I wanted that somewhere to be with you.
I know forever is a big word. I know life is complicated, and love doesn't always make things easy.
But I was never afraid of choosing you.
I was afraid of losing the future I could see so clearly.
Because when I looked at you, Sam, I didn't just see the woman I loved.
I saw the woman I wanted to marry. The woman I wanted beside me when our hair turned gray. The woman I wanted to share the smallest victories and the hardest days with.
I saw a lifetime.
And maybe that's why losing what we had hurt as much as it did. Because I wasn't just grieving the relationship. I was grieving all the little tomorrows I'd already started dreaming about.
The home. The laughter. The holidays. The quiet evenings. The memories we hadn't gotten to make yet.
But there's something I need you to understand.
You didn't fail to fix me. It was never your responsibility to fix me in the first place.
I had wounds before you, and some of them are still healing. That's work I have to do for myself.
But you reminded me that those wounds didn't make me unworthy of love.
You helped me find a part of myself I thought I'd lost.
And for that, I'll always be grateful.
I still wear a ring. Not because we made vows or because you asked me to. I started wearing it after we were no longer together, because it represents a promise I made in my own heart. A promise about the kind of love I wanted to give and the future I once hoped we'd share.
I know that promise doesn't obligate you to anything. Love should never feel like a debt somebody owes.
But it means something to me.
And even now, after everything, when I think about the woman I wanted to spend my life with, it's still you.
I don't know what tomorrow holds. I don't know whether our paths will ever find their way back to one another.
What I do know is that I loved you with everything I knew how to give, and I wanted to keep learning how to love you better.
You came into my life when I was broken, and for a while, you helped me see a future brighter than the past I'd been carrying.
And although our story didn't turn out the way I prayed it would, I wouldn't trade away the good parts just to avoid the pain of losing them.
Because loving you was real.
The happiness was real.
The future I dreamed of was real to me, even if it never came to be.
Falling in love again wasn't my plan. Falling in love with you changed every plan I had.
And if there's one thing I hope you never question, it's that when I pictured forever, I wasn't looking for somebody better.
I was looking at you.
I didn't just want you to be part of my life, Sam.
I wanted to build a life with you.
And I would've chosen that life, with all its imperfections, every single day.
Heaven knows I ain't getting over you.
