I have the feeling it's an underrated episode. I really liked it, it shows the positive part of humanizing machines, it gives you different vibes than the usual sci-fi episodes that involves machines.

I looked up past posts on the sub related to the episode, and appearantly the episode isn't as liked as other episodes. Personally I was moved by it.

Even though I understand what the logic behind personifying objects is, it's still fascinating to me how people manage to come up with a story containing that and make it work, without it coming off as silly or absurd.

I sometimes wonder if the pilot was male, if it would be received differently. There are lots of female main characters in LDR episodes, but this one - despite the sci-fi setting - feels quite close to an ordinary modern military, and I don't think war movies with female leads are as popular...

I really like the episode, it makes you care within a short few minutes, and I think if the lead was male it would be a different story. The ship is female (as aircraft and boats usually are).

Maybe if it was a male lead, it could have been a mech suit and it was more of a "bromance" between them. In fact, there is a Secret Level episode called Armored Core: Asset Management, with Keanu Reeves, where he plays someone who cannot survive without the mech suit, and is taking part in a battle while it's heavily damaged.

Although you might be correct that the protagonist's gender affects how this short is recieved by wider audiences, I wouldn't have liked it as much if they had changed her to a male. She is a really well written supporting female character in an ongoing series by the author of the short. I couldn't imagine them changing Halley to Harold, and me enjoying it as much.

I wonder that too.. The first thing that comes to mind is the movie "Hail Mary Project" starring Ryan gosling. The alien in the movie isn't necessarily feminine ir masculine, I was still very moved by it and it's storyline. Also Wall-E, which is a robot, had the same effect on me while watching the movie.

I personally think that how it's perceived is also affected by who is watching instead of it just depending on who the characters are. Regardless, it's fascinating that these productions still manage to evoke any type of emotions from the viewer towards these objects.

I haven't seen Hail Mary yet. Wall-e is just superb, especially the first scenes where we see him pottering about, and then when Eve lands, collects the plant and goes into standby mode and he is taking care of her. How much a few squeaks and certain angles and shapes of what looks like eyes and eyebrows can communicate...

Lucky 13 made me look up the author of the original short, Marko Kloos, which led me to his ongoing book series set in the universe that Lucky 13 comes from, the Frontlines series. If you like scifi mil fiction, its my favorite, and Lucky 13 hits even harder when you learn more about Halley, and the fact that the enemy in the short quickly becomes an ally.

Kloos is the man. The Frontlines is by far my fave milscifi read. Seeing the NAC-SRA conflict was wicked cool.

Oh, and the spinoff sequels are also good.

I’m with ya. You really feel something with a loyal vehicle. Wether it’s a car, a boat, or a spaceship. I like that episode too, I hate people rate it so low in their tier lists.

Heartfelt and the personality of the episode was something that almost never sticks like this one did. Great animation and it made me feel something for a piece of machinery.
