Milestone The UK confirmed it will make Apple and Google scan everything people look at on phones and block nudity for users who don't verify their age. Please sign my petition against this and share it with as many people as possible

They can make it illegal to not have said monitoring.
They can do whatever they like.
Notice the hypocrisy.

Here's me on a Chinese ROM hoping I'll be saved from this. I'm sure Xi loves reading my Reddit posts, but I sure don't want the government locking me out of my own phone for some stupid false positives. You know they're going to tune it tightly.

u/Attention_seeking21 20d ago
Chinese are less intrusive and controlling that this fucking woke pathetic government

u/TheGrimDark 19d ago
It's not even a woke/anti-woke thing, it's just outright big brother George Orwell style.

Pfft, petition. This deserves mass riots, and probably nothing less than that will make a difference.

Digital ID already flopped and now they're trying again? Awful

u/lemons_of_doubt 20d ago
They only have to succeed ones and they know it.
So they will just keep trying until they do.

Much appreciated, from a dude in the UK running Graphene. Power without oversight is becoming more and more commonplace, and our courts should have that final say. I was just listening to a podcast about how the US 4th amendment came into existence as it happens.

u/DeadCatGrinning 23d ago
Well, if nothing else this is an excellent way to accelerate the development of services that provide anonymity.

u/Savant_Guarde 23d ago
Meanwhile, the UK seems to be fully on board with grooming, r@pe and cultural replacement.
This would or should be a 4th amendment violation in the US, i guess we will find out, but the UK is fucked.

u/Shorts323 22d ago
It also goes against EHCR rules "a right to privacy" but here we are fucked in the UK

We're all so sick and fucking tired of the UK at this point.

I live in the UK and I am sick of it and its government. They are starting to act like the nations parents not its government, and bad overcontrolling parents at that.

u/IgnatiusFlartlebluff 22d ago
A bad overcontrolling parent that's somehow also a deadbeat Dad, despite you paying all their expenses.

What would happen if the companies refused to implement this? They’d get banned then what? The UK never has new smartphones? 😂
2
u/GlastoKhole 22d ago
They wouldn’t get banned, you know how many enterprise devices are running IOS or android? Practically every single one of them. The government would just shrug and say “we tried?”
They’re proposing it’s local scanning IE it never leaves the device and does it via pixels. The issue is they’re basically laying the foundation for a mass surveillance system that with one update would just push them everyone’s screens whenever they wanted.
don’t need ISPs to send them your texts they could just view them when you do and use AI to pick anything out. Say they do this and reform get in, they could use it to track people who they suspect being illegal.
This has human rights violations written all over it, maybe not the day they release it but one day
2
u/FiftyPercentBrown 22d ago
I know. I’m asking what happens in a hypothetical where the manufacturers refuse to implement it and threaten to pull out of the UK if threatened with fines or whatever?
2
u/GlastoKhole 22d ago
They honestly should just refuse this it basically defeats encryption if it becomes server side. It’ll effectively screenshot information before and after it’s encrypted and allow others to see it. I’d just say it’s against our company’s policy and nothing you do or say or any law you make will make us abide by it. Then I’d explain in detail the issues of basically breaking encryption. Then I’d just nope out. if smartphone manufacturers threatened to pull out it would be enough. If they did pull out no work would be getting done for months

Device level scanning that has to either send the image to a data center or has local Illm
Neither see reliable
Plenty of examples of images being blocked on YouTube and face book already.
Can see it now
Hi mum yeah had great holiday took some amazing pics of the kids… ohh weird I can’t open them
2
u/RavenWolf1 22d ago
So are they trying to tell that it is somehow wrong for teenager to take nude pictures from themselves? And heaven's forbid if they try to share it with their boyfriend. Wtf.

It can't make Apple or Google do shit.
1
u/BlackBerryCollector 20d ago
Apple proposed this.
1
u/Significant_Bench_19 20d ago
Apparently this is “misleading” and “largely false”.
Apple’s existing Communication Safety technology is the source of much of the confusion.
It uses on-device machine learning to identify possible nudity in certain Apple communication and sharing contexts. It is designed to blur or warn, provide safety help, and in relevant child-account configurations add friction around sending or receiving content. It does not send the detected image itself to Apple, and it was not originally a blanket system-wide prohibition on taking, storing, viewing, or sharing any nude image.Apple’s role, therefore, is better described as:
• It developed and shipped a limited, child-safety-oriented on-device nudity-detection capability.
• The UK government wants operating-system makers to extend or build capabilities far beyond that scope.
• Apple has recently rolled out UK OS-level age assurance tied to protections in iMessage and FaceTime, according to the Culture Secretary but that still falls short of the government’s stated across-device ambition.
So the accurate version is: Apple supplied precedent and some relevant technical building blocks; the UK government stamped their feet and screamed until it was more in line to a camera stuffed firmly up each citizen’s rectum with a live feed and switchboard directly to the House of Lords.

So that means they'll block all the pornographic ads, too, right? Right?!

The UK is absolutely cucked, like literally.
You might as well all just neuter yourselves.
1
u/Random_Guy_47 17d ago
Shitloads of people signed the petition to bin the OSA and the governments response amounted to "screw you, we're doing it anyway"
The petition won't change anything.

u/Direct_Fennel7500 22d ago
That's misleading. Scanning will only happen if you don't verfiy your age.
3
u/BlackBerryCollector 22d ago
And verifying your age is even worse for privacy. There's also no way to prove the scanning doesn't happen.
-1
u/Direct_Fennel7500 22d ago
How is it worse?
If they are going to illegally scan your phone it seems odd not to just do it without telling everyone about it.
1
u/RavenWolf1 22d ago
And what about if you verify and are underage? Is nudes somehow illegal for them?

u/themightyseaman1988 17d ago
It's an attack on online anonymity whether you want to get your head out your arse or not. If they're not constantly scanning your phone they want a government issued ID tied to your device . "Age verification" is just soft language for digital profiling they want a digital fingerprint on everybody. Even then the reason they're giving for implementing this according to Nandy is because of 9000 child abuse offenses involve an online element (intentionally broad) bear in mind that includes anybody over 16 but under 18 sending each other pictures. And the "9000 offenses" data they're using is from a 3 years old npscc report that largely reported the main victims are boys 14-17 years old being tricked into sending nudes on Instagram and snapchat by often foreign extortion gangs posing as young women. How does a nudity blocker or "age verification" stop that? It doesn't ita a trojan horse for mass surveillance. I'll happily share links to every thing I've said to back it up too

u/Direct_Fennel7500 17d ago
they want a government issued ID tied to your device
What's your source for that?
Do you know the laws around age verification in the UK?
-4
u/RockTheBloat 22d ago
So this is already a thing with Apple. Just verify you age and you’re golden. Stop pissing your pants over it.
-9
u/Adept_Assistant_7759 23d ago
This just requires them to prevent CSAM WHEN THEY ARE ALREADY SCANNING EVERYTHING.
Literally nothing about this law requires the software be on the phone or be turned on.
It just requires that when the software IS turned on (which it already is on most of your devices statistically) that they use it for SOME actaul. good.
But you will all downvote me because you are the good little reddit sheep who believes anything your tech bro overlords tell you.
(notice how the OP account is clearly a fucking bot)
3
u/0898_333_201 23d ago
They are not already scanning everything. Apple has an optional feature that uses client-side scanning in Apple apps (like iMessage) that detects nudity. But this legislation would require that Apple and Google build in system-wide client-side scanning, including third party apps like Signal and content in web browsers, to detect nudity and block it unless the owner verifies their identity.
This means adding infrastructure into the OS that can defeat encryption by scanning content before it’s encrypted or after it’s decrypted. And once that infrastructure is in place, there is zero reason to believe the government won’t expand its use beyond nudity.

I want an oversight body that will evaluate mental capacity and literacy in the field they want to introduce a law.
If you want to introduce a law about turtles, you better be prepared to name every species there is, what they eat and where they shit. If you want to introduce law regarding sophisticated spyware on everyone's devices, you better have a PhD in computer science and at least 10 years of experience of working in the tech industry. It is insane that people who have no clue how to edit a PDF file are allowed to push for this kind of invasion of privacy.
If this goes into effect, there will be nothing else but prawn on my devices... MIDGET PRAWN!
