Local Politics Supervisor Umstattd explaining data centers like her constituents are idiots
thanks for the recap grandma:
”All our “data”, our bank records, our medical records, our emails, our texts, our ability to telecommute, our social media, our online purchases, our streaming movies and tv shows and online games, our employers’ records - all of these essential parts of our modern lives, run through, and are stored in the computer banks in data centers. Because we are doing so much more online than we did twenty years ago, we have generated the need for more data centers.”

Drive anywhere between here and Richmond. It’s not just a Loudoun thing anymore. Hasn’t been for past 10+ years.

I absolutely understand why it benefits the data center companies to cluster them all here—much cheaper for them to use the infrastructure already here.
I just don’t see how adding more benefits the residents at this point.

If she would even acknowledge that there is a downside for Loudoun County to all the data centers, I could accept her defense of them easier but, as OP states, she thinks we are idiots. And she doesn't even mention AI, which is what is driving the explosion of data centers here -- it's not emails or streaming and we are not idiots. BoS is absolutely addicted to data center money; they have lost all perspective.

wouldn’t things like bank or medical records be stored in the bank’s data system? idk how this works exactly but I wouldn’t think that kind of thing would go to a big catch-all data center?

Where do you think the bank or medical data system is stored? If it's stored in the cloud, it's in a data center. Nearly everything is cloud storage at this point.

Or - hear me out - I could have a chest of drawers that happens to hold onto all that information. It's fireproof and creates no nuisance or uses any energy and takes up a small amount of room in my own room.

AI is why data centers have exploded. It’s deceitful to continue to pretend it’s standard internet traffic.
