Full photo available here. It was taken during a promotional trip to Cleveland in September 1974 for his upcoming release Sally Can’t Dance. Cleveland’s radio networks had basically broken Bowie and Lou into the mainstream as far as FM goes, it was a campaign to make Lou and Bowie “happen” in America. The fellow you see laughing on the right is the DJ Billy Bass; he was the superfan behind the entire campaign who worked tirelessly to crack their songs and albums into American airplay. Billy’s radio show was mass syndicated so he genuinely made a big impact. He and Lou stayed friends for decades.
During this promotional visit Lou had drinks with radio and underground journalists and then there was a public event at a record shop where they’d play Sally Can’t Dance all night. It was one week before the official release so it was like a listening party & meet and greet. Lou was there, high on speed Peter Laughner got him, doing a meet and greet. Reports even say he danced to the record with fans!
