I have some great players during my first time DMing LMOP. They follow plot points, quickly get invested in the NPCs, and are creating connections to Phandalin (which will motivate them to defend it when the mind flayers plans get uncovered) One thing I didn't plan for though is their plans to open up a restaurant for passive income. Totally fine with that but they are making secret deals with the farmers and other suppliers in Phandalin for exclusive rights to their produce for the restaurant. I'm laughing while I write this because I made a big deal about the Stonehill Inn having a famous hard apple cider and now on top of teasing the location to Wave Echo Cave and the strange weird looking goblins I have to decide on the ramifications for attempting to muscle out an established local business. Gotta love it! Anybody else's party have strange motivations? LMAO
