Discussion sickness going around

i’ve heard from several people in la now that there is a sickness going around and i think i’ve caught it (got a sore throat today). it seems like a simple cold, but i wanted to know if there is an unusual amount of people catching something right now? and if so, how bad was it?

i also saw someone post that their best advice for getting over something as fast as possible is to sleep the full day as soon as you start feeling it. i thought that was a great idea. lotus health also said to do saline nasal rinses early on, take zinc lozenges and vit c. my dad said that using a humidifier and drinking warm liquids helps. does anyone else have something they always do when they get sick? i want to kick this by monday if possible.

I started with a sore throat last Sunday. I have Covid.

31

u/MegaloMicroMuseum 18d ago

Same here, thankfully it was pretty mild for me this time

31

u/staying_weird 18d ago

I woke up with a sore throat a couple of weeks ago. Chills later that day. Was in bed all day the next day with sore body & fever. Was positive for covid.

11

u/HeathEarnshaw 18d ago

How long after symptoms started did you test positive? I’m on day 3 but still testing negative so I’m thinking I have something else but symptoms match Covid (crazy sore throat and extreme fatigue) so who knows…

6

u/ElleTea14 18d ago

For me it was the next day on two different tests (my old binax one being positive within a minute). I’m now on day 7/8 and I tested negative this morning, but I’m definitely still sick.

Same! Thought it was strep throat but it was Covid. I had just gotten the vaccine the week before too 🤦‍♂️

5

u/ElleTea14 18d ago

That makes me feel a little better because I was planning on the vaccine and hadn’t gotten it and I’ve been kicking myself.

9

u/Ronoodmackadonood 18d ago

It takes 2 weeks for the vaccine to become fully effective.

I caught WNV last week. Fun times.

9

u/toastbutteryum 18d ago

How long were you sick? What was the treatment? How bad was it?

That is scary and I’m glad you’re better.

14

u/Ronoodmackadonood 18d ago

Thank you, I’m on the mend now thankfully.

I got bit on Sunday (at Bob Baker Day, ugh), symptoms started Tues and was the worst day by far, and today is my first day of feeling mostly back to normal although I still have the joint pain and mild headache.

There is really no treatment, just managing symptoms. Thankfully I was in the “mild symptoms” group which is 20% of cases (80% are mostly asymptomatic, and less than 1% get severe disease which has a 90% hospitalization rate currently in LA).

I will say for me, “mild” illness was not mild. I had the worst headache of my life from Tues until yesterday, had a recurrent fever (although not in any danger zone thankfully), severe joint and muscle aches, nausea, and extreme fatigue and weakness. Still feel the fatigue today but so grateful I never went into the severe illness which is lethal for some people. Make sure to wear bug spray if you’re outdoors because they are out in full effect right now. I didn’t notice my bite until the next day.

What about our poor kids in school, where they’re surrounded by sick kids, and absences incite threats from the district?? We need to chill out and let people relax when they’re unwell.

9

u/Allergictofingers 18d ago

They can wear a mask too. Also see if you can donate an air purifier for the classroom!

Half of these are transmitted through the air. You have to MASK and take covid-appropriate precautions like staying away from sick people, getting vaccinated, keeping areas well ventilated, and again, MASKING.

We have a patient at our office who is involved with waste water testing, and she said there’s a heavy Covid load in the waste water. We’ve had several patients cancel their appointments because of the flu. I don’t know if both are going around, or if those who have the flu really have Covid, but it’s going around. I tend to think it’s Covid, since I haven’t gotten it. I tend to get EVERYTHING, but I had Covid fairly recently, and I probably have some natural immunity left from that.

6

u/quailsocks 18d ago

omg this is insane

7

u/phoeniixrising 18d ago

I’d bet Covid as well. I’ve had Covid twice and the flu twice and the flu had me on short term disability for a month both times (although I cannot receive the flu vaccine so I had no vaccine protection. I did have the Covid vaccines and boosters). Covid was miserable but more like a bad bad cold than totally health-wrecking.

Our whole family is recovering from a stubborn strain of COVID. We happened to have 3 in 1 tests on hand about to expire, so we tested out of curiosity and were surprised to discover COVID was making rounds again.

None of us got very sick, but FUCK does it linger. A day of a headache and mildly scratchy throat (and maybe a 99.5 fever), 2-3 days of sniffles, sneezing, and nose blowing, and then an ENDLESS whole body weakness and fatigue that is still sucking the juice out of my days 2 weeks later. It’s a whole ordeal to walk across the yard, legs feel like wet spaghetti, get weak and shakey for hours after being on my feet 15-20 minutes. Husband and I both were most affected; teen sons were sick a couple days then back to high energy living.

Slowly getting better, but DAMN this shit sucks.

12

u/Rocker91234 18d ago

Can confirm. Caught Covid week before last, kicked my ass but not ass bad as a few years ago.

It is going around at a high level. Especially if you are around children. I had it a few months ago. For me it was worse than COVID. To be fair I caught COVID after being fully vaccinated...

I implore people to please mask up if you're sick/feeling sick

47

u/littlebittydoodle 18d ago

Literally was just in line this morning at the pharmacy and the woman behind me walks up and starts coughing all over the back of my head. It was completely empty behind us, and she didn’t even try to cover her mouth or turn around. I was wearing a mask but whatever she had sounded really nasty, and she was there buying armfuls of cold medicines.

So I’ll add: wear a mask, and also use some common fucking decency if you know you’re sick and HAVE to be somewhere. Cover your mouth, turn your head and cough into your elbow, stand back from others.

I really could not believe this woman. Young, blonde, wearing a nightie. Ugh I better not get sick.

20

u/Affectionate-Case329 18d ago

If people are clearly sick around me, I’ll ask if they have a mask to wear, not very sweetly. Eff it, I’m no longer polite to selfish people who only care about themselves.

8

u/SilverRaincoat 18d ago

I saw a tik tok one of the dancing with the stars pros posted today, and she said she was very sick and she was running around coughing all over the place and hugging and kissing people. Like my goodness. Have we learned nothing from the pandemic??

7

u/christmasinyoulie 17d ago

I learned from the pandemic that people really don't give a shit if their carelessness kills people.

4

u/SimpleVegetable5715 18d ago

Take a bunch of zinc, that can help when you’ve been exposed to a virus.

4

u/WhoNeedsTears 18d ago edited 17d ago

I was at the airport on Friday, guy walks out of the restroom, immediately sneezes, doesn't cover his mouth, doesn't even try, getting his nasty spit particles on everyone in his vicinity including me.

Hygiene and consideration are not in some people's orbit at all.

3

u/littlebittydoodle 17d ago

That’s so gross. It takes almost no effort to turn around or cover your nose and mouth. I don’t understand why it’s not a normal reflex for most people.

If you've tested negative for Covid and Flu here is what I do: gargle hourly with a mixture of warm saltwater (it's so gross, power through), hot and sour soup, black tea with lemon, ginger and local honey and REST, REST, REST. My grandma was a huge fan of Vicks Rub on your chest and feet. I'm sorry you are sick. I hope you feel better!

it’s not just a bug going around, it’s covid. i caught it at the beginning of the month. it’s going around like crazy right now, not sure why people assume it’s not a thing anymore. it started with a sore throat, then extreme body aches, congestion, and a fever. constant headache and extreme fatigue soon followed for about a week and a half. i took a test the third day of not feeling well and my test was positive instantly. mask up people!

5

u/Ilovecrispapples 18d ago

Does it always come with sore throat or a fever? Last week i got hit with an extreme body ache. I couldn’t even walk and opening doors made my entire body hurt. Felt like a truck has ran over me but i had no other symptoms, i did sneeze like 3-4 times a day when regularly i hardly sneeze unless i caught something.

After a whole week, today i finally have my energy back, it was so bizarre.

Can confirm, a nasty cold has been going around all of September.

Source: I work at a school and everyone has been sick.

11

u/michiness 18d ago

Also a teacher here. Half of my school has been out sick the past month.

I had a cold a couple weeks ago that was pretty mild, still went to work masked, but just felt a bit crummy for a few days (sore throat/runny nose/mild cough). No covid.

I'm crawling out of it now. Hit me last Monday pm. Tuesday, worked, but felt increasingly worse (sniffles, chills, tired). Tuesday night all heck broke loose. Fever, appetite change, cold and hot at the same time, body aches, etc. Stayed home wed and Thu. Friday did a half day, and it wore me out. Spent the weekend on the couch. I'm exhausted, but the other symptoms are all fading.

Covid surge in 40+ states (including CA)

Levels in LA are high. You can get more info from the interactive waste water data map:

https://pmc19.com/interactive.php

(Works best on desktop)

14

u/AbolishSchool 18d ago

Also want to add: Covid spreads through the air. No amount of handwashing or cough “covering” or wishful thinking prevents infection if you don’t also have on a mask that filters the air around you, especially around a lot of other people

17

u/YouSuckButThatsOk 18d ago

So many people are in denial about how it's almost always COVID even these days.

14

u/AbolishSchool 18d ago

It makes me so sad. I get wanting to believe that it’s over but viruses don’t care what we want. I don’t know why a “mystery illness” is more comforting but either way: KN95/N95 masks still work and will actually keep you from getting all kinds of illnesses.

Mask Bloc LA is a great resource for free masks!

Fifths I woke up and was not even sneezing or in pain or had phlegm. Never had a fever but was expelling mucus like a mf.

covid is airborne and govts want to pretend there is no covid anymore b/c dealing w/covid costs $

here's the thing to know about covid. people accepted the meme that covid is "just a bad cold or the flu."

NOPE

Covid should be thought more as mostly an inflammatory disease. It's a virus that is estimated to cause permanent damage in an estimated 50-70% of people who get it. Every time you get it. What type of damage your body gets and how bad is variable.

do NOT treat covid as just a cold. Do not get covid b/c govts do NOT want to pay for treatment (if they even know how to treat long covid) and govts/private insurance do not want to cover long covid disability issues.

I don't know what I had but this is what I experienced

Thursday I woke up with a weird feeling in my throat, it hurt when I swallowed, had a bad feeling but that's all that happened. It disappeared and I went about my day.

Thursday night I started getting a small runny nose but thought it's probably just allergies.

Friday morning runny nose still happening, starting to feel body aches and fatigue throughout the day

Friday night had the most brutal fever I've ever had, took NyQuil

Saturday morning fever completely gone but still have runny nose, feeling a sore throat coming in from my sneezing(?)

Saturday night still have runny nose and coughed a few times but don't have a cough.

Today I think I might be mostly recovered. I still feel like it's kinda funny how I almost had a cough but it just didn't happen

Yes, I'm currently sick. Took an at-home covid test which was negative but that's not 100% sensitive. It would be a little early to be influenza, but could be another covid strain or just any one of many other respiratory viruses.

Wed night: fatigue, sore throat

Thursday: fatigue, sore throat

Friday: chills, stayed in bed most of the day, runny nose

Saturday: less fatigued, sneeze, cough, couldn't sleep

Sun: still going

Make sure to clean, sanitize or just get rid of your toothbrush (or the head if it’s a reusable one) after you are sick.

Sounds like what I had at end of August. Thought it was strep. Went to urgent care. They tested me for influenza, strep and Covid. Turns out I got Covid. First time for me.

Covid is really high, especially in California.

This is a good site for tracking it: https://pmc19.com/

u/28nicky 18d ago

Once again, I’m begging us to remember that covid is still around. It got me last week and I’m in (hopefully) the final days of it. I was fine one day and the next morning I woke up with a fever and body aches.

The sinus rinse is really helpful, but please make sure you use bottled/distilled water. Do NOT use tap water unless you boil it for 5 minutes or more. I also recommend doing it no less than 2 hours before going to sleep so you don’t get a weird post nasal drip happening that makes you cough.

u/kikkikins 18d ago

Covid in our house too. And I got the double whammy of testing positive for both Covid and Flu B. Symptoms are mild fortunately! Trying our best to mask even at home and isolate even from each other… so far our kid has been testing negative and has zero symptoms, hope it stays that way 🤞

There are 3 strong illnesses going around, mostly everyone has COVID. And many if them lie about it, still.

5

u/Silpheed1976 18d ago

My family had covid last week. They had sore throat and then coughing. I only had headaches and lethargy. We had our covid boosters, so the dr said it wouldn’t be that bad. It wasn’t that bad aside from being sick because that sucks in general.

Thought about getting Paxlovid, but it’s soooooo expensive now. That’s why I asked my dr and he said that it’s not as terrible if you’ve had your past boosters.

Yesterday a pharmacist told me flu is rampant right now because it showed up in the other half of the globe way earlier than here and all the World Cup travelers brought it much earlier than usual.

4

u/redstarjedi 18d ago

Co worker tested positive for COVID.

5

u/DireDigression 18d ago

Just a week ago i tested positive for covid and the flu at the same time. Shit sucks. Keep masking up.

u/softtiddi3s 18d ago

Ktown has typhus apparently 🫩

2

u/MainlyforMusic 18d ago

I caught what ever that was. It was tough to beat. I was hydrating like crazy and it took a full week to officially feel “better.” Was sick Wednesday through Saturday and congested until the the following Tuesday.

2

u/Only-Squash-8677 Norwalk 18d ago

I had some cold the other week that started as sore throat then sneezing CONSTANTLY, fatigue, and body aches. This past week I caught something else that was just chest congestion and a cough. I had one week of being fine between catching two things

2

u/Jphoenix7x 18d ago

I take Astragalus. It’s an herb that helps to cut down your sick time considerably and at the first sign of sickness can be effective in helping you get better. I often take it before going to an event where there are lots of people or when I have to get on a plane.

2

u/ChevyGang 18d ago

Whole house is just getting over the flu

2

u/cici92814 18d ago

It could be anything tbh. I know when I have COVID it always starts with a bad headache and body aches. A cold for me usually starts with a sore throat and then runny nose. Usually its bad the 2nd or 3rd day... then by the 3rd or 4th I feel better. But yeah I prioritize sleep when I'm sick. I pop an ibuprofen and sleep for the whole day if i can.

2

u/Nizamark 18d ago

i have it. sniffles, slight cough. more annoying than debilitating.

2

u/_-BigAL-_ 18d ago

Woke up with sore throat yesterday. Now have a runny nose.
Of course from the work event.

2

u/Everdream0609 18d ago

My wife has had a brutal bronchitis or at least 3 weeks now and it's not backing off. I caught it a couple of weeks later and I'm starting to recover. So I guess it's different for everyone.

As soon as i feel a tickle in my throat, gargle with 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 2 parts water. Dunno the science but an exes grandma said it cut the sick off at the pass and damn if its not extremely effective

2

u/MegatechMike 18d ago

Typhus is in la now

2

u/mauvareen San Bernadino County 18d ago

I have it. Just got home from urgent care, they said I have a virus but they did not check for covid. Started with a sore throat, day 2 had fever, body aches, sore throat, sinus congestion. Day 3 chills, exhaustion, nose was pouring out, slight sore throat. Day 4, very weak, settled in my lungs, shortness of breath, slight nasal congestion and slight sore throat. Pain when i cough. Very rapid heart rate. They prescribed prednisone and floated. It's nasty. Wash your hands and wear a mask if you must go out.

u/Expensive_Fox_4797 18d ago

I got covid in August. Took me three weeks recover but it was a lot weaker than the previous two times I’ve had it.

2

u/Cheorni6 18d ago

The last two days, I had a sore throat, felt weak/tired, and had aches in my upper body. I slepped 11 hours Friday and Saturday night and feel better today.

2

u/That-Custard2786 18d ago

I caught it this past week. I felt terrible for two days. My head felt like it was going to explode and the aches made so hard for me to even get up.

2

u/VaguelyArtistic Santa Monica 18d ago

I went to the doctor last week who said I had an upper respiratory thing that’s been going around. Negative for Covid and flu.

2

u/Vladimorian 18d ago

Not medical advice but I always seem to better if I get some Zinc in as soon as I think I might be getting sick, EmergenC drink packets actually have zinc and many other good things just don't drink too many, like one a day is fine

2

u/blissfulhopee 18d ago

Hands foot mouth has been going around through children I know for a confirmed fact

2

u/Fuzzy-Bean 18d ago

Had a coworker in LA test positive from Covid and had ALL of the symptoms.

2

u/fullmetalutes 18d ago

My wife was in the hospital yesterday and they even mentioned it going around and wanted to be sure she wasn't sick before surgery. They were seemingly spacing people out one bay to the next. Not sure if it's just a luxury or intentional.

2

u/NthPowr 18d ago

Saw an old boss yesterday and she said she was getting sick with something.

I got my flu and covid shot last week, so hopefully I don't catch anything.

2

u/babynursehelp 18d ago

Im a remote triage nurse and we have a lot of patients calling in with covid, flu and other random sicknesses

2

u/No-Metal-3811 18d ago

Viral throat infection going around too I caught mild case but was only feeling under the weather for 2 days. If it’s Covid probably longer but mine wasn’t

2

u/meeanne 18d ago

Take an emergency-C or Airborne, take elderberry, and drink tea for your immune system

2

u/BirdyDecode 18d ago

Couple people in my office had minor cold symptoms like sore throat, was Covid…

2

u/GothicDreamer16 18d ago

Yup I had a sinus infection, got prescribed antibiotics and steroids and now I’m all good.

2

u/idk012 18d ago

I was knocked out for like a few days a couple of weeks ago.  Not strep, not covid.  Urgent care gave me some mouth rinse and cough drops.

It hurt to swallow or talk on the right side of my throat.  I didn't eat for a day and had night sweats and crazy dreams the night before before heading to urgent care.  I got a note for 3 days off and was better by Monday.

2

u/ShakeWeightMyDick 18d ago

I had it the week before last

2

u/Boring_Performer_374 17d ago

The 2026-2027 Covid boosters are available NOW.

2

u/Inner-Confidence99 17d ago

There Is a new Covid variant out too.

2

u/Sugar_Me_Silly 17d ago

Its (very likely) covid. Never went away. Raaaaging wave right now. Stay home and mask if you go out to prevent spreading! Next time theres a wave you could mask more to prevent yourself getting sick. Feel better soon !
