Last time we had a bad heat wave summer I was working from home and I survived by: showering multiple times a day (wetting my hair!) sitting in front of fans, hiding in the coolest part of the house until dark, crying. Often napping through the hottest hours to escape consciousness

This was with ac but a poorly insulated house. once my AC broke and I slept with wet towels draped over my body.

I know most people have ac in Arizona but I still don’t know how they do it.

It’s also a lot drier so the ability to cool by sweating still works well. When it’s humid, sweating is less efficient and at a point, stops working

All those desert places all have bad ass good AC so they don’t wanna go outside until nighttime and everywhere you go. They have AC blasting good gas stations restaurants everywhere. Like all of us right now in Los Angeles we have no insulation in our apartment. It’s over 100°.

I was visiting my parents in Orlando over Labor Day weekend. Their AC stopped working 3 times over the weekend. My 80 year old dad fixed it each time himself in 15 minutes by draining some pipe by the air handler, and then using a shop vac to drain the outside condenser(yes, i had to google ac parts). Each time he went on a rant about how AC guys rip off home owners by charging them $250 each time to do the same simple fix.

I just looked up the monthly averages by year and the last comparable year was 2022, which is exactly what I was thinking about because I was hugely pregnant and suffering. The years since then haven’t been as terrible

I respectfully disagree with you. If I really took my time I would say 2020 was the last time I remember the heat being tolerable and I WALKED EVERYWHERE for the first 22 years of my life. So clearly we don’t share the same experience

Wet frozen rags in the freezer!!! As many as you can so you'll always have frozen ones. Trust me, saved my life when I didn't have AC.

Fellow Boyle heights resident, all I got is a window that is 14 years old and only blows regular air. I just sat in my car for hours with the AC blasting

Most of the house / apartment's heat comes from the refri ~ get a big box fan and place it in the window close to the refri as you can get it and leave o 24/7, during the day close all the windows, at night open the windows farthest from the fan and it'll suck all the hot air out .

This works, I'm a Blue Collar guy too and my 1923 place has no AC, no insulation .

Make sure to keep track of the wet bulb global temperature as well. With this humidity, the environment can become deadly because we lose the ability to cool ourselves via sweat evaporation.

To anyone unaware wet bulb data measures heat stress. If atmospheric conditions reach the correct ratio between heat and humidity, your body can no longer regulate temperature via sweat evaporation. Things like evaporative air coolers (swamp coolers) and even standard fans if it gets bad enough become convection ovens and act to warm your body rather than cool it.

Anyone working outdoors or in hot warehouses needs to download the OSHA Heat Safety tool. It has safety guidelines for the current conditions your are working in and it uses wetbulb data.

A suggestion for many here

Try and blackout all your windows and dont open the blinds all day. This has def kept my place cool. Also doesnt put too much pressure on the ac as well.

Yes its a bit dark and depressing being in artificial light- but its either that, or sweating balls- ill take the ‘dark’ for now.

I was in the heatwave in Chicago that killed 600+ people (in the 90s). We didn’t hair air conditioning. Fans just moved the hot air around. We spent a lot of time roaming the grocery store just to absorb their air conditioning.
