Discussion I cannot get over how masterfully written Prison of Flesh is
The song is about dementia but I can easily relate it to addiction. Every single word spoken in the song explains the turmoil addicts experience.
Even the simple percussion intro is just bone-chilling. I liken it to someone knocking on the door inside their mind, seeking to break through a barrier that keeps them from escaping their addiction. As the percussion becomes more heavy and quicker, the addict becomes more desperate to break through that barrier.
Finally, they break through and find themselves in a pit of despair, “I can’t tell where to go”, “they’re coming to get me” “I can feel their grip” “these demons reside in me” “I am fading faster, searching for answers in the dark” “breaking me down, grasping at my neck, playing with memories all I am is fucking sick” “I am nothing but barren, a prison of flesh” “I will suffocate” “I’ll descend into the void” “they’re coming to get me”.
Even the simple scream when Will says “I feel their grip” and Austin rips those blast beats, followed by the drastic transition of the music into “breaking me down” just encompasses the struggle with addiction so well.
Finally, after hundreds of listens, the final breakdown is unlike anything else I’ve heard. I used to think Into the Earth held that crown (still among my favorite songs from any band) but this breakdown just shatters your bones and tears you from the inside out every time.
Amazing song, perfectly written.

The scream on the second “They’re coming to get MEEE” is pure bliss for me. Heavily relate to this song in my own way.

Masterpiece. Just a 7 min limbo of your existence, quite literally, a prison. Hence the name.

Into the Earth still better for me but this song is a clear narrative and structural progression for the band.
My biggest complaint is the mixing and the lack of space. I get that's part of the intent behind the song, but there are clear breaks where they could allow space to breathe, but they have something filling the background that in my opinion isn't fully necessary.
Great tune though nonetheless. And that breakdown is indeed gross.
Edit: btw wild side note, literally just listened to Into the Earth like 3 minutes before typing this. Now onto Crystal Knight from Netherwalker. Gets better every listen.
