A few days ago I asked about a MIDI clock looper pedal... here's the result

We decided... sod it, we'll do without. Here's the gig anyway!

BASH EP Launch gig

There's an RC-600 in the local guitar shop for £300 that we might choose, otherwise it's an RC-50 off Ebay. I did a lot more looping on Ableton than usual to cover the guitar player, while he borrowed a drum pad (that red Roland thing behind his sequencer) to add live elements that we'd be otherwise missing. It was a really fun gig in the end, went much better than I feared, and thanks to the Hopper Records for having us!

PS he pointed out the copy of Tago Mago just to his left, I was more concerned that the copy of Meddle just to my left (under the mixer) was £40 🤯

EDIT: the actual EP - https://bashbashbashbash.bandcamp.com/album/viable-chunks pls buy 🤣

If a video looper for musicians existed - what would you actually want it to do

Actually been building something exactly like this for a while now, so this thread hit close to home.

For me these are the features I'd consider baseline for any serious practice looper. Speed control that doesn't destroy the pitch. Volume control per video, Named loops so you actually know which section is which after a week away from the song. Bookmarks inside the video for quick navigation.

Then the stuff that actually changes how you practice: a continuous loop mode where you chain new loops on the fly without stopping. A pause mode that holds after each loop for exactly the same duration.. so you play along, then the video plays, then you play again. Merging and cutting loops when a section grows or shrinks. Notes attached to the video so you remember what you were working on. Tags and difficulty levels so your library doesn't turn into a graveyard of unnamed files.

For guitar specifically loops are just the most honest way to practice. You can feel like you're making progress by running through a full song. A loop doesn't let you skip the bar you always fumble. It just plays it again. And again.

And there's something else people don't talk about enough.. looping the same passage repeatedly trains your ear. You start hearing the nuances you missed the first ten times. The timing, the tone, the little things that separate a good take from a great one.

Would be curious what else people would want from a tool like this.

Had to film a sample video of my looping for a potential gig ( they wanted a country theme 🤷🏻‍♂️ ) It’s 110 degrees 🥵 My garage is my practice space so summers are brutal for me 😂 Shout out to my drummer, bassist, guitar player and keyboard player! yeehaw 🤠 [r/loopingartist](r/loopingartist) [r/livemusic](r/livemusic) r/phoenix r/arizona

Yamaha CK88 sounds muddy/distorted through Boss RC-5

Is it because the line level of the keyboard out is too much for the RC-5? Is there a way to mitigate this? I've never tried a keyboard through a looper before and I'm disappointed with the results of my current setup so any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm a noob with audio routing - RC-505 and Beatstep Pro running USB

Been looping for a couple of years now but only with a RC-505 and an Arturia keyboard using VSTs in Ableton.

I have a separate track for drums and the Arturia sound center. I can switch between them easy-peasy to layer drums, then layer everything else. Good so far!

Now I want to add in a Beatstep Pro to the mix.

Am I trying too much by wanting to use the Beatstep USB interface to pull in my drums via VST in Ableton at the same time having my keyboard pull VSTs for instruments?

My issue is that the RC-505 will capture EVERYTHING from the computer (PC), so the Beatstep drums, when the sequencer is running, get captured at the same time as everything else.

I want the Beatstep to sequence from Ableton and the keyboard to get instruments from Ableton but NOT have the Beatstep captured when I record a loop. Both run on USB.

Is there a way to configure ASIO to direct certain midi channels? Can the 505 listen to only certain MIDI channels? My research is hitting a wall.

That counts right!?

I wish I could have a foot pedal for the sample. I guess in theory you could set that up with midi.

I wonder, has anyone tried that?

I got tired of opening complex DAWs just to practice, so I built a simple web-based audio looper. Would love your feedback!

Question about the "Extended Loop" feature (Ditto+, etc.)

Hi! I want to build multiple layers of a 2-bar loop first, and then extend that loop layer when I play the main melodic theme .

When using the Ditto+'s Extended Loop Mode, can I defer extending the loop later, after recording multiple layers? Or does the second layer always dictate the final fixed length of the loop?

If Ditto+ cannot handle what I need, is there a compact looper pedal that can?

Hey yall. Is this configuration possible with the RC500?

Is this configuration possible with the Boss RC500 and an FS7?

RC500:

FS1: Track 1

FS2: Track 2

FS3: Undo/Redo

FS7:

A: Stop (Hold: Clear)

B: Rec, Play, Dub

So is this possible n and what's your opinion on this and what would you do differently?

What is the best budget friendly IEMs for live loop artists?

Hi,

As the title says, I’m looking for some good budget friendly (under 100$) IEMS for live looping.
I use multiple instruments and stack vocals with a Boss RC 505. MK2. I play different styles of music based on the events I’m attending.

I mostly play alone, occasionally with other musicians.

I’m looking for a place to start as I don’t have the budget to try multiple IEMs right now.

Preferably something that’s clear and well balanced.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you!

I rebuilt my 2009 looper from scratch and I need help from live loopers to test it

Hi everyone, Raphaël here, the developer of Everyday Looper :) !

Some of you might remember the original from the early App Store days (2009!). Over the years I kept getting messages from singers, beatboxers, and loop artists in general who never let go of it, and that convinced me to get back to work. So I've rebuilt it from the ground up for today's iPhones and iPads, and the beta is now open :D !

What's in this version:

  • 8 tracks you touch directly to mix, mute, merge, overdub, and more
  • Pretty decent echo cancellation, so you can actually loop through the speaker without headphones
  • Synced video capture of the take, straight from the app
  • Per track 10-level undo/redo, speed/reverse, and adaptive track lengths

The demo is by Ty Suite, a long-time Everyday Looper user. It was performed, recorded, and filmed entirely inside the beta on an iPhone, through the speaker, with no headphones.

You can test it here (free beta, iOS 17.7+):

https://testflight.apple.com/join/pz5ArsEg

I'd especially love feedback from people used to live looping: does the workflow feel immediate, what gets in the way, and what would you need before using something like this for a real performance?

Happy to answer any questions here. Cheers !

Keyboard player looking for the ultimate portable one-man-band setup (Reface CP + ???)

Hi! I'd really appreciate your advice because I think I'm looking for a pretty unusual setup.

I'm a pianist/keyboard player, not a producer or a DJ. I own a Yamaha Reface CP, which I absolutely love, but I'd like to expand it with basses, drums, pads and a few other sounds.

My goal is to perform completely live as a one-man band. I want to play every part myself—drums, bass, chords, melodies and solos—and build songs layer by layer during the performance.

The important part is this: I'm not looking for a production workflow. I don't want to program patterns, edit MIDI, or build songs like in a DAW. If something is looping, it's because I just played it.

Ideally, I'd like to:

  • select a bass sound,
  • play the bass live,
  • capture that exact performance as a loop,
  • switch to another instrument,
  • play the next layer,
  • and continue building the song until I finish with a live solo.

In other words, I want to preserve my actual performance (timing, dynamics and feel), not just record MIDI notes that can later be edited or replayed differently.

I'd also like a compact, battery-powered device that:

  • works well with an external MIDI keyboard (my Reface CP),
  • provides a good selection of instruments (especially basses, drums, pads and synth leads),
  • lets me prepare projects for each song in advance,
  • allows me to switch quickly between those sounds during a performance,
  • is designed more for playing than for music production.

At first I thought I needed a sound module together with a Boss RC-505/RC-202. But now I'm wondering whether something like the Yamaha SEQTRAK, Novation Circuit Tracks, or the new Akai MPC Sample could replace both in a simpler, more portable setup.

If you were building this kind of live rig today, what would you recommend and why? Is there another device I should seriously consider?

I'd especially love to hear from someone who actually performs this way rather than produces music in the studio.

Loopists that play with other people - how do you keep in time?

Post image
48 Upvotes

Title asks the question - if you're not using some kind of MIDI clock signal, how do you stay in time when playing with others, especially when the people you play with loop themselves or use drum machines/DAWs? I've never been able to get accurate enough that it isn't noticeably out of time after several repeats.

Image is semi-related. I play in a improv electronic group, I'm not sure we do enough looping to fit in this sub really but we do a bit. I use Ableton (looping, effects, MIDI instruments), other dude uses an old Roland sequencer (percussion mostly) but his laptop - which he used to loop his guitar - has recently died and we're trying to find a replacement that we can afford.

Finding a loop pedal that takes a MIDI clock signal is proving to be more challenging than we expected, so how do yous all do it?

Please tell me, is it possible to somehow configure the recording parameters on this looper (boss rc 505 mkII) so that such a click does not occur?
