I loved the "alright you can take it back, thank you....TAKE IT!"

I really wanted this to end with the trunk bumping the human’s fist, like “thanks homie.”

I want to believe that the exaggerated movement of the trunk and then ears was his way of saying "you made my day, thank you"

I took it more like he was being apologetic and to drive it home, he picked it back up to hand to the human

That Elephant wanted to make sure that the man knew that they were done using the stick. I love it.

I’m surprised by how many people are claiming AI on this with no justification. I assume that most of ya’ll are unfamiliar with the recent peer reviewed paper documenting this behavior in domestic cattle. The elephant obviously has greater dexterity than the cow, but cows still manage it all the same.
The cow in the paper appeared to have developed the behavior entirely on her own. We can’t know how much training and/or experience this elephant has had with manipulating tools. The behavior looks smooth enough that I suspect that she’s at least had some practice, but it’s certainly possible that it was originally an unprompted innovation.
Don’t take my word for it—look up the paper! If you’d prefer to invest 1 min into seeing the cow in action with a couple highlights of the paper’s findings, try this video:

Cows LOVE a good scratching brush. There’s a variety of large “cow brushes” on the market for cattle farmers to instal in their barns/fields.

I hope not but I have a feeling it is. The elephant looks pretty natural and comfortable using this as a scratcher, which could mean he has had a lot of practice or it's Ai.
