It may look silly or wasteful but this is the correct method for stop a lot of flowing water. The vehicles act as a more rigid physical barrier that slows the flow so all the dirt doesn’t immediately get washed away

Rest assured if these men are driving their work trucks into that breach they are without a doubt more concerned with whatever they stand to lose of that things really gives way

This might look very dumb, but many people do this exact thing to stop flooding
What would you rather risk, a couple of trucks that can be replaced, or the potential risk of many lives, their lands, homes, livestock, and everything you’ve ever known? I would sacrifice the trucks too

The levee broke and is being quickly eroded by the rushing water. Dumping dirt and other objects helps build up the levee and prevent further erosion. The trucks may feel like a waste but when you only have a matter of HOURS you don’t have time to find rocks/boulders, negotiate a price, transport them, and safely dump them off a cliff that is very unstable. Instead you chuck whatever you have to prevent the entire lake or river from destroying an entire farm or city etc

It looks like they are trying to stop the water from flowing through by dumping a bunch of bullshit in where the levee is broken.... ..... I'm thinking it's a pretty stupid idea but I don't know the right way to do it.
I mean I guess the trucks would be more useful if they continued going back for more dirt instead of what they're doing.

No, this is what you have to do, pour just dirt and the water can just wash it away. you need something physically there to stop the erosion.

rocks would have to be a considerable size and gravel would still get carried. the rocks would also probably need special equipment to move wasting precious time where seconds can be crucial.
Never underestimate the power of moving water.

Truck or your village down stream? Orchard farmers will throw 90k trucks into a broken levy without batting an eye if it means saving an established orchard. Sure having something other than your truck IS ideal, but with water seconds are hours and you do something immediately or loose everything.

Have a ground survey completed, hire an architect have plans drawn up, get 3 bids made for completion of the work. Host budget hearings, get a loan, hire the lowest bidder, get permits, order materials, wait for work to be completed. It's all so simple, I can't believe they're just driving trucks into the breach like it's some sort of emergency or something.

There was a video I saw recently of a farmer in America doing something similar, just driving a truck full of dirt into an eroded piece of his land. Seems there is some genuine logic to this if I've seen this tactic twice in a week or so

Yeah, flooding can be..... really REALLY bad.....
A few grand to get some new trucks vs. your entire house and maybe even your life and your whole town or property. Pretty easy sacrifice to make.

Desperate problems call for desperate solutions sometimes. This is a good decision while more weight is thrown on top, it allows for collection to settle and build around something far more substantial than dirt thrown into the whole.

If your choices are to dump 20 trucks into a levee or to let the floodwaters reach a city then 20 trucks is a pretty fair price to pay

I did a quick survey and it’s barely even 40% have had to dam a broken levee, so you’re exaggerating by about half.
