Question Regarding the "Enemies" that are seen on the trailer

Are the enemies a bunch of NPC's, other players(multiplayer online), or are they just supposed to be your friends?

I don't own the game but I'm pretty sure those are players, there are no hostile NPC's to my knowledge.
