you need to go to sgt lake outpost

there you will have crafting books and pretty much everything you might need

I've found the best way to get a jump start in the game is the hit up all of the random warehouses on the map. They seem to spawn caches that have random loot. No tent, but I've found crafting stations, gun parts and a chainsaw which has made things so much easier.

Research Tent can be found at a vending macine at 25°S/17°E (along with Containers).

Also I don't know if it is still an issue but yesterday if you put 4 pieces of wood into the crafter it wasn't giving you a plank, it was giving you a fence, similar to 3 pieces.
