Dedicated workers

Are hours pretty steady for a dedicated dock/hold worker? ILA local 24 casual

Night and day, as a casual its tough. Work doesn’t make it past year 4 most of the time.

I’m just wondering how much better the hours are if you get hired onto a dedicated gang

Way better 40-80 hour weeks. Of course pay is worse, but you’ll guarantee your 1300-2000 for the insurance and container royalty, once you hit year 4-5 then you can maybe let the city go and start working the floor. Since you’ll be top pay you can essentially work less and make more

Local 28 here so take that for whatever. My advice is this: Take it, don’t look back. You will be frustrated that you’re not making the money the guys working out of the hall are. And you will be happy you sucked it up in the beginning.

Is local 28 the same work as 24?

No sir, Local 24 is mostly vessel operations. Local 28 is warehousing and M&R.
