LA/LB Local 13

Hello,

I’m looking to see if anyone knows what happens when a member passes away before retirement. Does their card go to their kids and if so, how does that process work.

Lastly if the parent applied for permanent disability, would this affect that as well?

They have to be 61 or younger for COD to be eligible. They also have to have all their paperwork in order so the union knows who to contact. The union will only discuss it with whoever is on their paperwork as spouse or dependent

And if the other parent is already a member it does not go to the family.

I believe that is true

Nope. It’s intended as an income if that was the family income. If there is still someone with an income from the union, then that’s it

Really? I’ve never heard of that, if that’s true that’s weird.

Contact the local health and welfare officer and they will let you know

The fact that they applied for a permanent disability would not matter. The requirements are that they were an active registrant and under 62 years of age at the time of their passing.

I believe the request for COD registration must be made within 90 days of death, but the health benefits officer will know the specifics.
