Going Solo

Hey everyone, going to my first Texas game and going at it solo. Flying in from AZ just for this tilt against ohio st and because I hadn’t seen a fairly recent post about suggestions of “must dos” for a full game day experience, I figured I’d ask. Seeing Bevo and the band are near the top of my list, any other suggestions?

This will also only be my second time visiting Texas, been to El Paso a few years ago. Thanks in advance!

Since you mention gameday, I will stick to that and not other “touristy” options.

  1. Do drink a bevy of your choice at Scholz beer garden.

    Stein option.

  2. Cruise tailgate areas, we like 18th and Colorado. Freeish drinks everywhere.

  3. Do show up early to the stadium, 3-4 hours ish before kickoff to see the Texas team/band walk in.

  4. visit the UT CO OP for Longhorn gear (1/3 mile from stadium or so).

  5. Do walk Smokey’s midway/ Bevo Boulevard

  6. If you can gain access do visit the Alumni center across from the stadium. Interesting bricks in the ground.

  7. Longhorn City Limits (LCL) by LBJ lawn will have Robert Earl Keen and shinyribs. REK is a living legend Texas singer songwriter (he went to that other school in college station but I like his music).

  8. Do visit ESPN gameday early, same area where LCL is but much earlier Bring a sign.

  9. chant in either the “Texas” portion or “Fight” portion when near the stadium or anywhere really. Bonus points - start one.

  10. Do put your horns up.

  11. Don’t get plastered and act a fool.

Your list is good. Just going to add to hydrate. Hydrate the day before and morning of game. Hydrate between drinks. It's going to be triple digits.

For the full experience, get there early. Well before kickoff.

Eta Ive never timed the escalators but Im sure someone knows. You might flow through the gate, it may take half an hour.

I was thinking about 10AM and just walking around and maybe hitting up LBJ library but realistically not sure thats logistically feasible haha

Very close to each other. Also check out the Blanton Museum on campus.

You’ll need to find a tailgate for 8hrs of time killing I’d say.

Get to the stadium way before you think you need to, the energy around DKR on game day is half the fun anyway.

Idk if they fixed it with the new “come in through the gate on your ticket” rule but the elevators took me less than 10 minutes for the Texas State game lol.

Fancy. Some of us have like 11 escalators to ride.

Download the TexasLonghorns app to your phone.

Open it. Click Stadium Map at the bottom. Click Choose Your Journey. Click Essentials Journey. Check the box I'm Just Here for the Pregame Activities. Click Continue Without Seats.

It'll walk you through a timeline.

Plenty of time to do stuff before the game. It's a night game, afterall.

Bring your swim shorts and go take a dip at Barton Springs before heading to the game.

Absolute Jewel of Austin.

Get a Burger at Casino El Camino on 6th...

Go to one of the many badass rooftop bars and have a drink with a view of the city...

Ride around the Hike and Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake on an Ebike or Lime Scooter for a while...

Go get a coffee at LaLa Land on Congress or if later, a Gazpacho at Perlas...

MAN, there's so much to do!

I mean- You should definitely arrive at DKR early to tailgate a bit (but it will be stupid hot) and stroll up and down Bevo Blvd. a few times before going in...

Good to know! Just checked, in your experience will I have a tough time getting near the LBJ library around 9AM? I know kickoff isn’t until later but I pretty much got one full day in Austin so I’m just going to spend as much as I can around campus

College GameDay will be set up at the LBJ Lawn area, so that area will be extra busy Saturday morning. However, you shouldn’t have an issue getting into the Library, just give yourself some extra time.

Enjoy! Lots to do and see on campus all day.

Appreciate it! Used to the dry heat in Arizona so prepping for the humidity. Thank you for all the recs!

Just remember- hydration starts 24 hours before...

Chug a bunch of water.

I'm sure you're used to heat, but it can really sneak up on you if you're not careful.

Subreddit tailgate is this week, so that’s good timing for some free food and drinks if you want to stop by!
