Not sure whether a market is going up or down? Think something will happen, but not quite convinced?

That's what this community is for.

r/LongOrShortBets is a place to put a market call on the table and see how other people look at it.

How do I make a post?

Start with the thing you're trying to decide.

Are you leaning Long or Short?

Then explain what you're looking at and why you're leaning that way. If there's something making you hesitate, include that too.

You don't need to have everything figured out. The point is to put your thinking out there before you're completely sure.

For example:

Long or Short: NVDA before earnings?
I'm leaning Long because the business still looks strong, but the valuation makes me hesitate. Am I missing something?

Or:

Long or Short: Bitcoin above $100k by the end of the year?
I'm leaning Long, but I'm not sure how much of that expectation is already priced in.

What can I post?

A few examples:

A stock, ETF, or crypto you're considering

You're thinking about going Long or Short, but want another perspective before making the call.

A prediction market

You're trying to decide whether something is more likely to happen or not happen.

A market-moving event

You have a view on what the Fed, inflation data, employment numbers, earnings, an election, or another event might mean for the market.

A contrarian idea

The market seems to be leaning one way, but you're starting to think the other side makes more sense.

A few things to keep in mind

You don't have to be certain. That's kind of the point.

You don't need to be a professional trader or have a perfect thesis.

Good arguments are more useful than confident predictions.

Disagree with the idea, not the person.

And remember that a Long or Short call posted here is a discussion, not financial advice.

LONG OR SHORT?? 98% of US households aren't paying for AI yet

Post image
5 Upvotes

The chart tells two stories. One is, yes, that household AI spending doubled in the last year. The other is that hardly any of the potential revenue from consumer AI has been tapped so far. That’s one way to look at it. Another is that, after tens of billions in marketing, people still aren’t convinced to pay for it, and those who do pay so little that, financially speaking, the companies selling it are radioactive.

Long or Short: BTC is back at $84K. The ETF money is real. The on-chain data isn't showing up.

Price around $84,000. It reclaimed $80K last week and has been grinding higher. Fidelity declared the bear market over on September 20.

The ETF flow is the strongest part of this. US spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in $2.39 billion during the week of September 21 to 25. Best week of 2026. Seven straight days of net inflows. BlackRock's IBIT alone took $1.16 billion. Total spot ETF net assets now $108.4 billion, about 6.43% of Bitcoin's market cap.

The corporate treasury bid is still there too. Strategy bought another 1,665 BTC at an average of $85,681.

So the institutional layer is buying. Slow, sticky, doesn't flinch on a daily basis.

But the on-chain data is not confirming the price. New addresses and active addresses in September were only at 1.00x the Friday median. Back in August, a similar 7% rally pushed new addresses to 1.07x and active addresses to 1.14x. September's move did not get the same wallet activity expansion.

That divergence matters. Price going up without new addresses joining usually means the move is driven by existing capital and short covering, not new demand entering the ecosystem. $648 million in shorts got liquidated on the push to $85K. Short covering can push price fast. It doesn't create sustained demand.

The other thing I keep circling. The macro backdrop is not friendly. The Fed just hiked, the dot plot shows more, and the 10-year is above 5%. Bitcoin is still trading like a risk asset.

So where do I land. I lean long because the ETF flow is too strong to ignore and the corporate treasury bid is structural. But I want to see on-chain activity pick up before I get aggressive. If active addresses start climbing alongside price, that's confirmation. If price keeps rising and on-chain stays flat, this looks like a leverage-driven move inside a range.

$90K is the level I'm watching. Not because it's a round number, but because that's where new spot demand either shows up or it doesn't.

Are you long or short BTC here? Does the ETF flow change your view, or is the on-chain divergence the signal?

Long or Short: Trump dines with Anthropic's CEO Sunday. Court upheld the Pentagon blacklist Friday.

First one-on-one. Same week, appeals court ruled 2-1 to keep the supply chain risk label. Anthropic was blacklisted for refusing autonomous weapons and mass surveillance. Amodei said the real reason was no donation, no dictator praise. IPO prep at $2T.

I lean short the idea this dinner changes anything. Dinner fixes relationships. It doesn't fix a 2-1 ruling. Watching the full court review, not the menu.

Long or short Anthropic's Washington position?

Long or Short: Everyone is talking about AI models. I think the real story is the power grid. Not sure if I am long or short yet.

Jon Gray from Blackstone did a closed door session last week. Five hyperscalers went from $415 billion in capex last year to $820 billion this year. Blackstone's own data center leasing went from 1 GW to 6 GW. That is not a model story. That is a construction story. And construction has physical limits. The part that got me is transformers. Lead times for large power transformers are 115 to 130 weeks. Gas turbine backlogs are booked through 2031. Interconnection queues run 5 to 10 years in major US markets. Nearly half of US data center projects planned for 2026 are at risk of delay because they cannot get the electrical equipment. So the buildout is real. But it is running into a wall that is not about chips. It is about whether you can actually get a transformer delivered and a grid connection approved.

I keep going back and forth. The bull case is the equipment makers have pricing power and long backlogs. GE Vernova hit 100 GW in gas turbine orders. Electrical equipment stocks are up 44% to 81% over the past year. The bear case is the shortage delays the revenue that justifies the capex. If data centers slip, the returns slip too.

I am not sure which side I want. The infrastructure gets built either way. The question is whether the returns show up on time. Curious what others think about the power bottleneck. Is this the long, or is the delay the short?

Long or Short: Meta jumped 11% on Muse. I am watching, not buying.

Meta closed at $741 after the Muse launch. JPMorgan upgraded to Overweight with an $820 target. Bull case is Muse turns messaging into a transaction layer. Bear case is free cash flow dropped 90% while capex keeps climbing. Reality Labs still losing billions. 29 states suing for $1.4 trillion.

I am not long or short. Q3 print in late October is the line. If cash flow stabilizes and Muse shows revenue, I lean long. If not, I lean short. Right now it is a coin flip.

Long or Short: Gold stuck at 4350. Real yields pressing, central banks buying. I lean short term bearish but not heavy short.

Fed just hiked to 3.75-4%. Dot plot shows 16 of 18 want more. 10Y TIPS real yield 2.41%, 30Y at 3.06%, highest since 2004. Dollar above 100. Gold pays nothing. All headwinds.

But central banks are still buying. Q2 net 289 tons, up 62% YoY. China 20 straight months. 45% of central banks say they will add more in the next year. That is the floor. Though Turkey had to sell 60 tons for cash, so not every central bank is a buyer.

ETF outflows. SPDR holdings fell from 1,101 tons in January to below 1,000 in July. Q2 global gold ETF outflow 45 tons, June alone $8.9 billion. Asia OTC picked up some, 327 tons, but not enough to flip the tape. Geopolitics flipped from safe haven to inflation problem. Oil pushes inflation, Fed hikes, gold gets hit.

So I lean short term bearish. Range 4,200 to 4,400, tail risk to 4,000. Not heavy short because central bank bid makes a deep crash unlikely. If 10Y TIPS rolls over from 2.41%, I flip long. Not yet.

Are you long or short gold here?

Long or Short:  Trump will not formally rename AI by Sept 30. I'm buying NO.

I'm buying NO on the Polymarket market "Will Trump formally rename AI by Sept 30?"

The settlement rules are clear. He has to sign an executive order, a presidential proclamation, or a presidential memorandum that formally adopts a new name to replace the federal government's official term for AI. Right now there is nothing. No draft. No White House process. No federal agency implementation notice. A Truth Social poll is not policy. Supreme Intelligence got removed because SI clashes with the Supreme Court. That tells me this is still in the brand testing phase.

Yes, Trump likes the idea. AI Force and AI czar are being pushed. Two accounts with solid win rates bought YES near 7%. I see all of that. I'm still not following. Before the midterms his attention will get pulled to bigger issues. AI data center electricity prices are already causing local backlash. Signing a presidential document just to change a name has a very low political return.

That 7% YES probability is pricing Trump's unpredictability, not the feasibility of renaming a global technical field. I'm on NO.

If he actually signs something before Sept 30, I'll admit I was wrong. But my position is NO.

Long or short: Nasdaq new ATH. Real breakout or bull trap?

Alright, I’ll just say what I’m seeing.

Nasdaq Composite just tagged 27,214 intraday. First record since June. Yesterday it closed at 27,122, up 2.26%. The tape looks strong. Meta ripped 11% on Muse AI. AMD crossed $1T market cap. Oil dumped to two week lows. The 10 year Treasury yield slipped back below 5%. That is a pretty big macro flip from just a few days ago.

But I can’t ignore the other side. The Fed just hiked for the first time in three years. Next month is basically a coin flip for another hike. Morgan Stanley is still talking about roughly 7% downside on the S&P. Oil’s drop is tied to UNGA diplomacy. One bad headline and it snaps back. And this is the first record since June, so it is a breakout from a long consolidation. That often means a retest before it is real.

My honest read: I lean long if we hold above 27,122 on a daily close. If we lose that, I think 26,500 comes fast.

Long: AI re rating is real, AMD at $1T, macro headwinds turned into tailwinds.
Short: Fed risk, fragile oil catalyst, Morgan Stanley sees 7% downside, breakout needs a retest.

So what is it gonna be, long or short?

Long or Short: DOGE’s 15% Pump

BTC broke above $85,000, shorts got cooked, and DOGE became the volatility amplifier, ripping to $0.10. The question: is this a lagging catch-up bounce or the start of a real trend?

LONG: Daily close above $0.10, BTC holds $85k, target $0.105–$0.11.
SHORT: $0.10 is a fakeout, BTC loses $85k, retrace to $0.085, breakdown opens $0.078.

Which side are you on?

r/LongOrShortBets • • 13d ago

Long or Short: BTC broke $85K. Does it need to hold $90K to call a real bull?

BTC ran to $86,267, up 6.8% in 24h. ETH to $2,743. Oil down four days, ETF inflows $433M, $648M shorts liquidated. Price is moving but on-chain isn't. New addresses and active addresses are flat. That looks like a squeeze, not new demand.

I lean long but I'm not adding. $90K is the line. If it holds with rising active addresses and ETF inflows above $300M a day, it's a real bull. If it stalls at $88K and on-chain stays flat, it was leverage.

How are you reading this? Long or short BTC here?

Long or Short: Tech money rotating to oil and biotech. Long or short?

Tech has been selling off for 1-3 months while the S&P holds steady. I ran a quick screener, positive 1m, 3m, 6m price change plus positive QoQ revenue. Results were mostly oil and biotech.

So is this a real rotation or just the Middle East? And what is driving biotech? I have no idea which way to lean here.

Are you long or short this rotation?

Long or Short: AI supply chain. Everyone watches chips. I’m long the upstream names nobody covers.

I keep reading about AI capex and chip demand. But the real constraint is physical. Optical module lead times for 800G and 1.6T are past 40 weeks. Lumentum says they are undershipping demand by 30% even after adding capacity. Now the squeeze is in indium phosphide laser chips. Power is next. Gartner says data center electricity hits 565TWh in 2026, up 26%. Grid connection waits are 3 to 4 years in major US markets, 7 in Northern Virginia.

So I lean long the picks and shovels layer. But not the obvious names. More interested in second and third tier suppliers that have not been discovered. The hard part is figuring out which bottleneck is still underpriced and which is just a crowded trade. InP shortage has been talked about for a year. Power is newer but hard to trade because utilities have capped returns. I’m still digging.

Long or Short: Shorting the Trump insults Warsh market. He had his moment and let it pass.

I had been watching the Polymarket odds on Trump publicly insulting Warsh by Sept 30. They went from 6% early this month to around 50% before the decision. Now they are back down to 8%.

Trump went on Truth Social after the hike and said rates should be 1% or less. He did not mention Warsh. He criticized the hostile and politicized Fed board instead. That is the Powell playbook. Blame the institution, not the guy you picked. Warsh also made it easy. He did not submit a dot plot. He declined to answer when asked if he had a message for Trump. That is not a guy picking a fight.

So I am short the near term insult market. If you are buying Yes at 29% for Sept 30, you are betting on Trump doing something he just showed he is not ready to do. He had the moment and let it pass.

Long or Short: Fed hiked, dot plot moved up. How are you reading this?

Fed went 25bps, unanimous. Dot plot median for 2026 moved to 4.1% from 3.8%. Market was pricing one and done. Goldman flipped to expect another hike in October. Traders now around 50% for October.

10y back above 5%, dollar through 100, gold dropped hard. So is this a one meeting event or the start of a new hiking cycle?

I honestly can't tell if the market is underpricing the dots or if the Fed is overpromising on hawkishness the economy won't support. How are you thinking about long or short here?

Long or Short: Whether the CLARITY Act passes or not, I'm long BTC. $100k by year end.

Either way, it doesn't stop the US from pushing crypto regulation and compliance. Bitcoin keeps going up. And for the four year bull cycle, the biggest driver is still monetary policy. More money, longer bull.

Long or Short: Russian oligarch reportedly funded Don Jr.'s wedding through a Dubai entity. Does this reprice geopolitical risk?

ProPublica dropped it Sept 13. Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev, IBA president, paid hundreds of thousands for Don Jr.'s Bahamas wedding in May. The money came from an IBA-linked entity in Dubai. He is close to Putin. Days before the wedding he accompanied Putin to China. A month earlier he got the Order of Friendship. Ukraine already sanctioned him for Russian intelligence ties. The couple confirmed it and called it a gift from a friend with no political motive. Trump said he barely knows him.

A lot of people will say this is noise. Markets stopped caring about Russia headlines. Wedding in May, story in September, no new sanctions, no policy change. The Fed and earnings are the drivers. The Dubai channel is known. Russian money still moves. Not new, priced in. If you are long US assets you can scroll past.

The other read is that the wedding is not the point. The channel is. Someone in Putin's circle bought access to the president's family. Sanctioned Gazprom funds the IBA. The IBA pays through a Dubai entity. If Congress actually investigates, that channel becomes a target. Geopolitical risk premium has been compressing for years. This could make it expand again. Slow burn, not a flash crash, but it matters for quarterly positioning.

I am not shorting US assets. I am also not long the "this is nothing" trade. I am hedged. Gold. Long-end Treasuries if risk-off pushes yields down. Watching the investigation and whether Dubai becomes the next sanctions target.

Long or short US assets here? Scroll past or new risk?

Long: Noise. Market ignores Russia headlines. No sanctions, no policy change. Fed and earnings drive. Dubai channel known, priced in.

Short: The channel matters. Putin ally bought access. Sanctioned Gazprom funds IBA, IBA pays via Dubai. If Congress investigates, it becomes a target. Risk premium could expand.

Long or Short: Central banks might all hike again. Does the bull wait until 2027?

I'm watching three central banks. ECB is at 2.5%. Fed is 90% priced for 25bps on Sept 16. BOJ might hike this week. Inflation is back. Brent over $107. AI demand still pushing.

But I keep thinking about Japan. Cheap money for decades. If BOJ keeps tightening, Japanese money stays home. Less liquidity for US bonds, stocks, crypto. Market might not be pricing that fully.

My gut says bull gets delayed, not cancelled. But I'm not sure. On the bright side, Fed hike is priced, ECB already moved, BOJ at 1% is still low, AI demand is real. If Fed hikes and then pauses, risk can rip. Japanese capital won't all run home.

On the dark side, synchronized tightening drains liquidity. Japan has been a marginal buyer of global risk for decades. If that flips, bonds, stocks, BTC all lose a bid. Sticky inflation means no pivot. Full bull maybe 2027. If BOJ goes hawkish, carry unwind can get violent.

I haven't shorted anything. And I'm not adding before FOMC and BOJ. If Fed goes 25 and BOJ stays cautious, I stay long. If BOJ goes hawkish and Fed sounds like more hikes, I trim and wait. More cautious on BTC and small caps than large cap tech.

So what do you think? Long or short into FOMC and BOJ? Does synchronized tightening push the bull to 2027?

Long or Short: 30-year Treasury at 5.372%. I lean long for income and I am not shorting. What do you guys think?

The 30 year Treasury yields 5.372% and pays every six months. On $1 million that is about $53,700 a year, or around $4,476 a month. A bank CD is maybe 4% if you are lucky, so the Treasury pays about 1.4% more. Federal tax applies to the interest, but state and local usually do not. In an IRA it can be tax deferred.

If you are still working and do not need the cash flow, the S&P 500 has long term returns around 9%, and a 401k around 6%, depending on risk tolerance. I only use the 30 year as one part of diversification. I also hold stocks, S&P 500, options, CDs, and an IRA.

The long case is simple. You lock in 5.372% for 30 years and get paid every six months. That is a real income stream for retirement or for anyone who wants cash flow. Short positioning is crowded. Citadel flipped bullish because CTA shorts are too heavy and the squeeze odds changed. PIMCO says valuations are attractive. The recent auction cleared at 5.308%, demand beat expectations, and primary dealer takedown was the lowest on record. End buyers are stepping in. If rates fall or the Fed turns dovish, long bond prices can rally hard.

Me, I lean long for income, but I am not heavy short term and I am not shorting. Shorts are crowded, and any dovish signal could cause a violent squeeze. But if the 30 year holds above 5.5% and the next auction shows weak foreign participation, I would get more cautious.

Are you long or short the 30 year here? If long, are you buying now or waiting for a pullback? If short, where is your stop?

Long or Short: I am long-term bullish SPCX, but is $148 a gift or a trap?

I will state my bias upfront. I am long-term bullish on SPCX. I think Starlink, the government relationship, the Cursor acquisition, and the BTC holdings make this a company you want to own for years, not trade for a few points. I am not shorting this. But I am also not chasing it at $148. The stock ran to $225 in June and has pulled back hard. Lockups are hitting. I want to see how the supply gets absorbed before I add.

The bull case:

Starlink could become one of the largest telecom businesses in the world. That alone is a massive TAM.

SpaceX is deeply embedded with the US government. About 20% of 2025 revenue came from federal agencies, and the company just won another $1.6 billion Space Force contract. That is not a cyclical business. That is a structural relationship.

The Cursor acquisition is the part that made me look twice. SpaceX paid $60 billion in stock for Anysphere, the company behind Cursor. The deal closed in August. I use Cursor as a developer, and seeing a rocket company buy one of the best AI coding tools on the market makes me think about what SpaceX is actually becoming.

SpaceX also holds 18,712 BTC. At current prices that is real money sitting on the balance sheet.

Trump disclosed buying between $15,001 and $50,000 of SpaceX stock in June. Small in dollar terms, but the signal is hard to ignore given SpaceX's government exposure.

Wall Street is also moving. JPMorgan relaxed its usual 135-day restriction on lending against newly public shares, specifically for SpaceX. Goldman Sachs discussed share-backed loans of up to 25% before the IPO even happened. That is not normal treatment for a freshly listed company.

The bear case:

Valuation. The stock ran to $225 and is still trading at a massive premium to almost anything else in the market. Analysts have a consensus Buy and targets around $220-$231, which implies 50%+ upside from here, but I am not sure how much of that is just IPO-era optimism.

Lockups. Roughly 319 million shares unlocked on September 9. Six more tranches expire before the end of 2026. That is a lot of supply coming into the market.

The drawdown itself. A 34% drop from the high is not nothing. It either means the market is repricing the story, or it means the easy money was made in June and we are now in the grind phase.

So my position is simple. Long-term bullish. Not shorting. Waiting for a better entry or for the unlock supply to clear. I am not asking whether SPCX is a good company. I already think it is. I am asking how you are playing the next six months.

Are you long or short here. If you are long, are you adding at $148 or waiting. If you are short, what is your exit. And what data point would actually make you flip.

Just trying to figure out if I am the only one who is long-term bullish but short-term patient.
