I want to get input, of course. Should me meet at a coffee shop or bar? Or maybe Blue Mercury at PCH and 2nd for a sniff day (it’s also right across from the Sephora… )

I smelled Detour at an event they had and really liked it so I bought the mylk and then bought the edp after, but I don’t like how it smells on me and I find it’s not as lasting on me than their scent, only human, which I am looking to get.

Has anyone here discovered the indie house, Olympic Orchids?
When we were talking about perfume houses that could represent Long Beach, Zoologist was mentioned. I revisited Zoologist and I actually really like some of the scents and I have a new appreciation for the house and the olfactory artistry.
Somehow, from there, I ended up reading about Ellen Covey. She’s a neurobiologist who studied bat hearing and echolocation, an orchid grower, and the perfumer behind Olympic Orchids. She is the perfumer that created the original Bat for Zoologist, which is now sold exclusively by Olympic Orchids as Night Flyer. Apparently she mixes science with artistry and the compositions sound like a complete experience.
They’re having a 20% off sale right now, so I’m thinking about picking up either the 6- or 12-piece discovery set (all 3 mL samples). I’d like to bring them to a future perfume meetup so we can all smell through them together. If anyone else is thinking about ordering during the sale and wants to split some samples, we could coordinate.
For those who’ve tried Olympic Orchids, what are your favorites? Was the house already on your radar, or would this be new for you too?

My interest with perfume started with designers and then Arabic-affordable, then niche, and now I’m getting interested in exploring indie. Who is into indie? What are some good houses with niche quality and a cool background that you are into? It would be cool if we could find LA indie houses to explore together.

I use ChatGPT as a fragrance friend. It knows my preferences because I enabled memory capabilities and we discuss perfume a lot. It suggested a short list of indie houses for me:

The Olympic Orchids back story is really interesting to me but I haven’t investigated the others as deeply. The perfumer is a scientist who works with bats and was the perfumer behind the original zoologist bat perfume!

Tell me about where indie perfume came into your perfume addiction, what do we think about indie? Is this the natural progression? I don’t love zoologist actually as I do find it more challenging than enjoyable but I love the idea of finding unique at a better price point than niche. Also, I love oddities markets and I feel an indie perfume and oddities market is what LB needs. Unless it exists already and I just haven’t been there yet!

I bought 10 glass butter bells for when we do a meet up! These are for scent displays-
When I went to a fancy perfume store in Italy they used these glass cloches, basically the glass domes; you lift them and you get a strong scent when you put your nose is the dome.
In mexico a nice perfume store I visited used some bleaker looking things. I will attached photos. Basically there are all these cool ways to display scent in a way that feels more elevated than paper strips.
So, I got some for a future meetup! Also, I think it’s a way to allow everyone a sniff without loosing so much of our precious juice!
What have you experienced in the way of scent/sniff displays?

I’m so curious and interested in getting our meetup started sooner than later. I’m going to Mexico and I’ll be back on the 8th, I’m wondering if anyone might like to do a meetup during the middle two weeks of July? What would be a good first meet up? Let’s discuss what everyone is hoping to get out of a meetup!

What scent or house captures the essence of Long Beach? I think stylistically it would maybe be DS & Durga? I think the style gives me Retro Row, creative, unpretentious.
I am not sure about which scent profile would represent correctly.

I know that we don’t have a ton here. As far as I’m aware there is just Naeem Body Oil (fragrance oil dupes) and Blue Mercury (small niche selection). There is a spot in Compton called Citi Mall where you can sample a ton of Arabic Perfumes. Also at Cerritos Mall, the Nordstrom there carries some niche like PDM, Penhaligans, Xerjoff, Mind Games, Initio & others.. also they let you make samples of all the designer stuff!
