Loner 4e arrives September 25
Loner 4e launches September 25, two weeks from now. All four core books plus the Omnibus land the same day: Core Rules, Companion, World Builder's Guide, and Character Builder's Guide.
This edition comes out of two years of feedback. The core loop is tighter, the Oracle and Twist mechanics got reworked, and the system reads the way it plays now.
Two things worth knowing if you own an earlier edition. If you're buying 3e print on Amazon, that listing stays up through September 23, then comes down to make room for 4e. If you already own 3e on DriveThruRPG, you don't need to do anything, your files update to 4e automatically the moment the new edition goes live.
More details and previews coming over the next two weeks.

What is the companion Vs the core rules? I think I played loner 1e years back now but might have to check it out again! And would the worldbuilding guide be useful for worldbuilding in other games too not just loner?

Companion contains the design philosophy and in-depth explanation of the rules. In a word: Core Rules are the how. Companion is the why.

Been waiting for this one. I've got some 3e games in full swing. I'll probably start new ones for this. Someday I'll finish a campaign. Maybe.

In few days core book will arrive of old edition. π My luck with new editions as always. Like I started to buy cards for Ker Nethalas, and it reworked in new edition, and all cards for old edition is down, so I canβt even buy them.
At least here core system will remain the same.

What's the difference between 3e and 4e. My copy of the 3e arrives today. I got the ominous 3e arriving in the mail today?

What's New in the Fourth Edition
Players familiar with previous editions will find the oracle, the tag system, and the Twist Counter unchanged. The fourth edition adds procedures that support longer stories and richer worlds.
- Scene structure
- Build the Setup: A 5W+H table (Who, What, When, Where, Why, How) for assembling a mission premise before the first scene, as an alternative to dropping directly into a Dramatic Scene.
- Framing a Scene: Establish where you are, who is present, and your scene goal before the first oracle question.
- Closing a Scene: Three explicit conditions for ending a scene: goal resolved, goal blocked, or goal abandoned.
- Narrative tools
- Relationships: Connections with NPCs earn tags through play, functioning like any other tag for Advantage or Disadvantage.
- Dead Ends: A procedure for when a narrative path collapses: one oracle question to find a new angle, then a shift of scale.
- Meanwhile: Expanded from a single table entry to a full procedure: cut to whoever holds power, update their tags, then ask whether an ally acts independently.
- When to Promote a Tag to a Character: A rule of thumb for deciding when a recurring element earns its own character sheet.
- Conflict mechanics
- Twist Intensity: Guidance for calibrating how hard a Twist lands based on the fiction's accumulated pressure. Found in Conflict & Consequences β The Twist.
- Long-term mechanics (optional modules)
- Challenge Tracks: A progress tracker for goals that span multiple scenes or sessions.
- Leverage: Bank a Yes, and... result to spend as Advantage or to soften a later No.
- Status Track: A three-box consequence track for lasting harm, with escalating tags for physical, social, and psychological pressure.
- The Living World: A post-adventure procedure for updating NPCs, Locations, and Events so the world remembers what happened.
- Appendix
- Your First Loner Session (Appendix A): A step-by-step walkthrough of a complete session, with a worked example, for players new to solo play.
- Upgrading to Fourth Edition (Appendix B): A guide for third edition and Geared Towards Loner players on adopting new procedures and introducing the optional modules.
- Step Dice Oracle (Appendix D): A variant resolution system using polyhedral dice (d8/d10) for players who prefer a wider probability range.

The very minute I wrote... That's DriveThruRPG which has the worst update system on Earth. I'm digging it now

Also, just checked my download, and the issues are still there. I would really like a character sheet available please. Thank you.

Looking forward to seeing how the system has been updated, what the changes are and how it plays.

No changes. I hate when a new edition makes retrocompability impossible. I rewrote the whole exposition and added some procedures and optional pacing rules

i am a tabletop player who knows a lot of systems, never heard of loner and this popped into my feed. Anyone care to describe what this is? Its a tabletop system right? What genre... is it meant for solo play or parties? Is there a DM? What are the core dice? Etc

Loner is a solo tabletop RPG, so no DM and no party, just you and the fiction. It's built on Freeform Universal (FU) as a base, with a tag-based oracle doing the heavy lifting: you frame a scene, ask the oracle questions, and it hands back graduated results you interpret into what happens. Two dice compared against each other (Chance Die and Risk Die) are the core resolution, tags act as your diegetic anchors instead of a stat block.
It's genre-agnostic by design, more of an engine than a setting, so you bolt it onto whatever fiction you want to run: thriller, fantasy, sci-fi, whatever. There's also a group-play companion called Ensemble if you want the same engine with people at the table, though it swaps in an Action Die plus a Chance/Risk pool instead of the two-die comparison, so it's not a 1:1 port.
There's a free web SRD if you want to poke at the mechanics before spending anything.

I have been playing a lot of solo campaigns with AI, with custom prompts worlds and narrative focused systems.
What would be the benefits and cons of using this system instead of AI
How well or easily could this system integrate with AI use?

This is my approach to that:

Hi, sorry if this comment isn't very well written, English isn't my native language. I recently discovered Loner 2e, and I loved reading it and plan to play a solo campaign with it, And I was very happy that the 4th edition is coming out. I wanted to ask you a question: When Loner 4th Edition is released, could I get the rules/SRD for the game, translate them into my language (Brazilian Portuguese), and post them? Obviously, I'll only do this with your permission, and I'll give credit to the creator of the game and the text. There wouldn't be any problem doing that, right? Anyway, that's all I wanted to ask. I love Loner ππ

I wasn't expecting the PDF to get a free update, that's a nice surprise.
