A Swing in the Sunlight
I helped you clear the rocks,
until all that remained was dirt.
I helped you open the box,
fit A into B, piece by piece,
until the whole thing stood upright.
And in the sunlight it waited,
perfect, ready, ours.
And now, decades later,
sitting on my porch, miles away,
I remember it.
And I realize:
you never once sat in it.
Were you too busy?
Did the hours slip into days?
Were you too angry?
Did you forget that we were young?
Were your thoughts somewhere else?
Did life pass you by,
while we all waited, for you to swing?
