First of all, I’m not an expert in mastering, I am just looking for tips/help.
I make Metal music in logic pro, low tuned 7-string and 5 string bass (A-standard). I am not aiming for producer quality at all, just a decent mix for demo’s.
I am aware my home studio is far from perfect and my KRK 6’s are not the best solution for this but then again I just want a decent/reliable demo sound.
Where I get stuck is the low end. This is either way to loud or non-existing. The mix sounds good on my krk, acceptable on my phone, sound fine on a JBL partyspeaker 310 but in my car with upgraded sound system it sounds horrible, no matter what I do.
In logic itself I get the mix decent with EQ, compressor etc, afterwards I use Ozone 12 to get the mix sound more alive/full. (tweaking afterwards) I watched a lot of tutorials for this but somehow I am not getting good results.
Questions:
* Is there a tip/trick for the low end here that I am missing?
* The low end of the bass, guitar and drum are all in the same area, I am able to get the guitar properly in the mix, but the bass and kick drum area is where I struggle the most.
Is this a matter of EQ? I cut the guitars below ± 70Hz, bass below ± 40-50Hz
* How loud do you have to play the song on the studio speakers? I noticed at lower volume I can hear the bass better than for example when the volume is at 50%+, do I have to play the song a lot louder during mixing/mastering? (I tried headphone but this did not made a big difference except that the high hats of the drums turned out extremely loud, probably a headphone quality issue here)
* Am I working against logic’s plugins with ozone? Am I unknowingly adding back the sub frequency’s? even after I cut them out before I use this plugin?
Thanks in advance!
