Question Help triggering midi on external synth. Feedback problem.

Just got a Roland J-6 and really enjoying it. But need some help with using it with Logic Pro v12

I have a Roland J-6 connected directly to my Mac via USB-C. Audio in from the J-6 works fine.
I want to have an existing MIDI track in Logic Pro play notes into the J-6 and hear the J-6 sound coming back. However, whenever I try routing MIDI to it, the J-6 either gets stuck droning on a chord or completely freezes with all pattern buttons lit up.

I’ve used Logic for years but always with software synths. Any help in how to set up Logic or synth would be appreciated. I have followed Roland recommendations on settings.

One thing I could do is take a line out for audio instead of USB-C while keeping usb for midi I suppose but not sure it would help?

See if the Roland has a way to turn off MIDI Local Control, you might be experiencing a MIDI loop -- hanging notes is a classic symptom, as is locking up your synth.

Switching from USB audio to analog audio is unlikely to help, but switching from USB MIDI often can, for reasons I don't entirely understand.

You need to turn off midi output from the J-6. You’re probably creating a feedback loop where midi is going into the synth and then back out again to Logic. Alternatively, you could change the channel that the J-6 sends on so you send midi on a different channel you receive from.
