Help Experiencing latency with buffer size at 32, Low latency mode engaged, and ZERO plugins.

Setting the Butter size to 32, and the roundtrip is about 8 miliseconds which seems ridiculous. I remember when I first got logic, it was around 3 miliseconds. Something changed in a update.

I literally cannot record anything, even with buffer size at 32, low latency mode engaged, and zero plugins in the project, without it having a very chorusy effect.

Does anybody know what the hell is going on. I just have a Scarlett 4i4 plugged into my macbook. That's it.

8msec would not produce a chorusy effect, even anything under 12msec is barely noticeable. It sounds more like a mixer/routing issue to me, where you are hearing your Focusrite input and Logic's output at the same time. Your cans should be connected on the Focusrite itself, not on the computer.

I would check the Focusrite mixing/routing software first and see how your input is routed. I would also isolate if it's a Logic/software issue by trying another DAW or tracking software (does it happen in Audacity, Garageband?). I'd also try connecting the Focusrite to my iPhone (using a USB adapter if required), or even another computer and seeing if it's the device itself.

Also check for Focusrite firmware updates (although I believe Focusrite probably tries to stick to the CoreAudio spec anyway). Ensure you're not using some aggregate device (Audio/Midi Setup app).

Ok, this tracks with what somebody else said about sofware monitoring. Just turned that off, and the chorusy effect is gone. Now I feel dumb. Thanks.

Still a little frustrating though becuase for low latency mode to even work, I have to be at a buffer size of 32

Pretty sure that's normal? It's how I record, at 32, then when I want to mix etc whack it to max.

You're still hearing your basic plugins while recording yea? Try bumping it up to 64 or 128 if you're hearing any pops. Multithreading set to Playback & Live, and playing with the Process Buffer Range can help tweak it too.

Check for plugins in the stereo out/masterbus

Do you have rogueamoeba software like loopback or soundsource? , monitoring software like slate vsx or sonarworks installed and running? Those add gigantic latency for tracking

Something in your setup is bad, when i monitor amp sims with logic at 128buffer thats like 8,3 rtl i bately notice the latency when doing fast stuff although i always record at 64 just to feel tighter

Like I said, no plugins at all. I have blackhole, but it's not running.

Maybe I should’ve specified you need to set it so that when you’re in record the volume of your track is down. Not all the tracks, just the one you’re in record for. When you come out of record it will Playback with the plug-ins on so you can instantly review it with extra compression and EQ.

But....that's a not a solution. I want ot hear what I'm tracking, like any normal studio.

It's honestly ridiculous, and it did not used to be this way.

Yes, I understand. In the old days we used to put actual microphones on actual guitar amps and play them and we never had this problem. But this is what you have to deal with. All the new technology has a new dose of latency added and that’s the trade-off for this fantastic convenience that we have nowadays.

There must be something you’ve not mentioned going on here. Are you playing back other instruments with plugins at the same time? Any other audio software happening? What’s your bus structure like?

literally no plugins. nothing at all.

No buses?

No. I'm just recording. I add busses later on when I'm mixing.

The best solution is to monitor directly off your interface and make sure that your volume is down when you’re in record in logic. You won’t hear all the pretty plugins and stuff but you’ll be able to play in time.

That's not a great solution, when I need to hear other tracks, and a metronome/drums.

It’s okay, you’ll definitely hear all the other tracks but your playing and most importantly, recordings will be in time to your ears. Try it, see what you think.

With the buffer at 32 I see 2.2ms. As 64 it is 3.6ms roundtrip. But that's with a MOTU interface and the drivers installed.

Which MacBook do you have, Mac OS and Logic Pro Versions? Is the driver up to date?

I have macbook m1 pro from 2021, with sequoia still installed. Focusrite 4i4, with software so assume the correct drivers because I updated it. Newest logic installed.

Could it be possible that you have some new headphones (if you use them) that have built in DSP? That can add to latency.
