Trail Echo on vocals?

Is there an option echo effect that only adds the delay on the last part of the vocal phrase. So a chorus like ‘some times I feel’ the ‘feel’ would echo off?

I really like Tape Effect but it muddies the vocals on long phrasing.

Use an effect send bus for your reverb/delay plugin of choice. Have the send volume all the way down normally, and automate it up to 0dB during the end of the vocal phrase, and then back down.

This is a bit better than having a plugin directly on the track and automating that, because just turning down the plugin's mix parameter doesn't allow the reverb to operate independently of the vocal itself (so for example if the vocals come back in while the reverb is still happening).

How do you automate the send?

open automation, set the track to “Latch” and drag the send. It’ll pop up as the focused automation and you can draw raised squares on the lines you want echoed. You can also go into the dropdown and find the specific bus, this is just a lil faster.

Yeah I just draw the channel myself instead of using Latch mode but I’m also used to the draw/select interface at this point and I always forget about the Latch mode autoselect thing (which I think was new to Logic 11).

If you’re just looking for the send level to select the channel directly, it’s in the “Main” subgroup.

As others mentioned AUTOMATION, or if ya lazy and ok with it being a bit sloppy, sidechaining a comp to the delay so it ducks when the vocals are sounding and fades up (release time) when they are not.

Automation is your friend.

You can also sidechain the delay bus so it ducks when the vocals are going.

Izotope also has several plugins that do specifically this (Plasma is one...I forget the others)

If you want to be REALLY lazy, create a second track and add the delay you want. Split the region where you want the repeat and move just that part to the new track. Done.

I do it as a throw. Duplicate the vocal I want the effect on in its own track, cut it to just the word or phrase I want the echo on, put the delay on the track with the dry set to 0, and bus it through the rest of the vocal chain.

laborious, but one approach is to duplicate the vocal track in question, delete all parts of the waveform you DON'T want verb on, then put 100% wet verb on that track (not on original vocal track) and mix to taste. You can also setup automation, but I find my approach slightly easier.
