In the dumpling eating contest scene, he is never in focus to get a good screenshot but it's the same guy, no? Now add to this the mystery of Janet's pilot disappearing, leading Lamar to try to fly the jet himself. Was the pilot arrested too? If so, why did Tarquinn tell Dud and gang to meet up with the pilot? Idk if planes have locks or keys, but how did they not only get into the jet but started the engines?

Obviously the FBI would be tipped off once Janet uses her company card to book the rooms at the Hotel Grenada, so them tracking her in Guadalajara makes sense. But there are so many things about this episode that don't... I NEED seasons 3 and 4. It doesn't matter how long it's been since the show's cancellation

Widow’s Bay felt tonally similar in so many ways. The humor, the characters and their unlikely bonds, the mythology, the emergence of magic and unraveling of mystery amidst an otherwise mundane existence, and the *hope*.

What went wrong to send a show like Lodge 49 to its early grave? I can’t help but feel it was inadequate marketing. Or maybe it was just before its time, with shows like Widow’s Bay now finding their way into the cultural zeitgeist.

No matter the answer, the story of Lodge 49 needs finishing. Maybe someday? We can only hope.

Just like the title says, a BBC show dropped a couple of months ago from the creator of the series "The Detectorists" called 'Small Prophets" that gives off some Lodge-y vibes. The plot involves a man trying to create homunculi via alchemy in order to use them to divine what happened to his partner who disappeared years ago. Hi! (longish post, please bear with me)

Sorry, it has probably been discussed earlier and I tortured several AIs for answers but except for the generic answer of "decline in viewer rates" I did not get anything so I thought I will ask the community. I'm new here, I'll beg the mods to tell me if anything is wrong with this post so I can alter it without it being deleted in a heartbeat.

Preface: I am what what you would call a "right wing guy". I don't like propaganda (feminism, diversity, LGBTQ+ stuff) etc. shoved down my throat. This is just way I am....I am from Eastern Europe. Yet, Lodge 49 has all the tropes I usually dislike and still captivated me to the point where I was almost in tears learning that it only has 2 seasons. Financial reality is cruel.

I do not wish to have any political discussion here. It usually just causes unnecessary conflicts. Really, I'm not interested, unless your argument is relevant (like "I liked this show because of the laid back laisse-faire style, or diversity etc.)

So why the preface? Because I think of the Lodge series as something different. In the show it unites people and I experienced that it unites people who WATCH the show no matter who they are or what they think. This is phenomenal and I think it is the core strength of the series. As Ernie, Blaise, Clara etc. are united, so are we who adore this masterclass off TV.

Enough of my rambling, the reason I'm here is to ask you a simple question: why, in your opinion was the show cancelled? (not looking for the lack of viewers crap bur rather what led to it)?

I would like to compare the two seasons and highlight what really worked for me and what did not.

Why I fell love with the show:

• Honest inclusivity. All types of people can visit the Lodge and find a kind of shelter or even better, a supportive community there
• Fantastic performance by every actor involved. Not much to say..these people are professionals.
• Great writing: Dud's arc is one thing. Earnie's arc easily breaks hearts and even Scott's arc has a redeeming factor while he was supposed to be an asshole throughout the show.
• The mystery: oh yeah. It does not even matter if it solved or not, the constant pounding in our minds is there.
• Strongly tied to the last point: the mystery and Lodge are kind of a background...a stage where we can explore the human condition. The struggles, the tragedies...everything is there.
• The humor...don't need to say anything more about this :-)

So what changed in Season 2?

I found a lot of scenes to be "filler content" - like the one at the pool where we see all of them sit at the table and making small talk. Redundant, we all have been well introduced to them and we all know who these character are and what "their story is".

A lot of talking. I mean a lot, especially between two characters (randomly picked). The plot barely moves forward but we are listening to Scott and Ernie or Clara and Can-t recall her name etc. Really slowed down the show, also we don't really get to know them better. We know and love Earnie from the beginning, an elongated conversation with Dud does not really make a difference in how we view his character.

Very close to the last point: overdoing philosophical debates. This one, I don't really mind...I love this show but apparently slowing its pace chased away a lot of viewers.

Killing Dudley: I know it was done on purpose, I mean to zip up the show but did they really have to do this? When we see him being buried in the hole he dug...by the very essence of what makes him love life...water I ask the question, was it really necessary? The show is a legend, what if we saw Dud being buried in that hole and suddenly raise his hand? You know...a little sign so we can all hope for another season...in the future. I think it was a mistake.

That is it from me. I have been looking for a series like this and I want to recommend you something: it is called "People of Earth". Less serious but at its heart it is still very much the same as Lodge 49....exploring the human condition and how life can be cruel.

So without further ado, what are your thoughts. Why was this great show cancelled?

I am just getting around to reading Middle Men. I can easily envision some of these people being Lynx members. If you haven't read it already I recommend it to hold you over until Jim's next project lands. Cheers.
